The Winelands in South Africa are among the most popular regions in the entire country. And after our recent visit, we can more than understand why! Winemaking has been practiced there since the 17th century, when the Dutch founded Stellenbosch.
But it’s not just the delicious wine itself that’s the focus here, but also the fascinating landscapes. Many wineries are located amidst lush green landscapes with fertile valleys, rugged mountain formations, and beautiful forests.
In South Africa, there are several hundred wineries, countless wine cellars, and even wine routes specially developed for tourism. No wonder several thousand visitors come to this region every year.
Wine tastings, picnics, or guided tours of one of the wineries are particularly popular. Today we’ll introduce you to some of the wineries we’ve visited and give you tips on accommodation, travel, and costs.

Stark Conde Wines
While looking for a delicious breakfast, we discovered the beautiful estate of Stark Conde Wines. Idyllically situated in the Jonkerhoek Valley, just a few minutes from Stellenbosch and about a 60-minute drive from Cape Town, the winery offers a stunning backdrop.
We were captivated as soon as we got off the bus: the lake with the island and the wooden pavilion, the Postcard Café, the mountains, the greenery, the vines – simply magical! After a short walk around the lake, we made ourselves comfortable on the terrace of the Postcard Café and enjoyed a delicious breakfast with fresh juices and coffee.
The view of the lake, the mountains, and the vineyards was the icing on the cake. The café is open daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. – for us an absolute highlight of the Winelands.
Wine Tasting at Stark Conde Wines
The wine tasting takes place on the island with the jetty and wooden pavilion. Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., you can enjoy your wine tasting with 6 classic wines (R 130), 3 premium red wines (R 165), or 5 best-of wines (R 210). The setting is beautiful, with views of the vineyards, the lake, the mountains, and the valley.
Of course, you can also purchase wines at this winery, such as Stellenbosch Syrah, Red Mountain Sauvignon, Oude Nektar, or Kara-Tara. And by the way, you can also stay overnight in a luxury cottage with space for up to 4 people (R 2350).

Waterford Estate
The Waterford Estate was an absolute highlight of our wine tour. It came up so often in our research that we simply had to visit it – and we were not disappointed. South of Stellenbosch, idyllically situated in the Blaauwklippen Valley, the estate impresses with wild olive trees, lavender, fynbos, grapevines, and citrus trees. Even the drive through a tree-lined avenue to the Mediterranean villa is an experience.
The courtyard is reminiscent of a Tuscan finca: tables and chairs under flower-lined paths, a central fountain, and a relaxed atmosphere. Here we sampled the excellent wines, snacked on Belgian chocolate, and enjoyed the beautiful ambiance. A member of staff guided us through the wine tasting and served us delicious coffee – an all-around perfect stop!
Wine tasting at the Waterford Estate
The wine and chocolate tasting (R 150) was fantastic. There were three wines paired with a piece of chocolate for each one, served on a pretty wooden board. We could have also done a standard tasting (R 175) or a Jem tasting (R 185).
The Waterford Estate also offers wine safaris (R 1850 pp) and informative wine walks (from R 850 pp) with reservations. You can learn more about the wine production and the estate. And like at any winery, you can also buy a variety of wines here.

Delaire Graff Estate
Our tour through the Winelands took us to the luxurious Delaire Graff Estate at the Helshoogte Pass between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Even as we approached, past verdant vines and an elegant avenue, it was clear: this is a very special estate. And indeed – billionaire entrepreneur and jeweler Laurence Graff has created a masterpiece here.
Once we arrived at the top, we were greeted by two first-class restaurants, a spa, a boutique hotel, jewelry stores, a terrace with spectacular views, and numerous works of art. The estate felt like an open-air museum – elegant, modern, and stylish, but not over the top. Even though the 5 exclusive lodges were far beyond our budget at at least €1,200 per night, the visit to the Delaire Graff Estate was an impressive experience.
Wine tasting at the Delaire Graff Estate
You can do the wine tasting on the beautiful terrace overlooking the vineyards or in the chic lounge. The tasting with 3 wines is available for just R 120 per person (€6), with 4 wines for R 160 (€8), and with 5 wines for R220 (€11).
If you would like to eat at the Delaire Graff Restaurant or the award-winning Indochine Restaurant, you should definitely make a reservation in advance. We found the trip to this winery to be truly lovely and relaxing. The art collection, in particular, truly amazed us.
Boschendal Winery
By chance, we stumbled upon the Boschendal Winery, one of the oldest in the Franschhoek Valley, founded in 1685 – aptly called “the grandmother of the local wine industry.” Around 55 kilometers east of Cape Town, you’ll find a large estate with a rose garden, vegetable and herb garden, a museum, restaurant, small shop, and historic buildings that can also be rented out as accommodations.
The atmosphere is peaceful and intimate, perfect for a relaxing day. The gardens are ideal for families, as children can run around freely. The restaurant uses fresh ingredients straight from the garden, and sustainability is a clear focus. A highlight is the manor house “La Rhône” – a beautiful example of Cape Dutch architecture – as well as the magnificent Manor House with chandeliers, antique furniture, and paintings.
Wine Tasting at Boschendal
So how about a wine tasting? Wine tastings start at R 150 per person. Premium tastings are also available, which take place in the beautiful manor house (from R 350 pp). Daily wine cellar tours are also offered, where you can learn all about the wines and their production (R 60 pp). But that’s not all.
The Boschendal Wine Estate also offers vineyard tours, where you can learn more about the history of Boschendal and the wines, including tastings (R 1,200 pp). Or how about a picnic? Reserve a fully stocked picnic basket for two people (R 850) and enjoy your time at this beautiful, lush estate.
La Motte Wine Estate
La Motte is a renowned winery that impresses not only with its excellent wines such as Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with its modern architecture. We were particularly impressed by the art gallery, which presents an impressive collection of South African art.
The winery exudes a very peaceful, relaxed atmosphere and, with its small farm shop, bakery, and lovingly landscaped garden with sculptures and a pond, offers the perfect place to linger. Stroll through the beautiful grounds and unwind.
Wine Tasting at La Motte Wine Estate
At La Motte Wine Estate, you also have the opportunity to sample the wines produced. A simple wine tasting with 6 wines is available for as little as R 80. The flagship tasting with 4 wines is available for R 160.
The estate also houses a bakery, a small farm shop, a museum, a restaurant, and a beautiful 5 km hiking trail.

Delheim Wine Estate
Delheim Wine Estate is beautifully situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch and is a true family winery steeped in history. Delheim is known for its award-winning wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, as well as for its strong commitment to sustainability.
The winery’s roots date back to 1699, but it wasn’t until 1951 that Michael Hans “Spatz” Sperling brought international success with his passion and even helped establish the first wine route in Stellenbosch. Today, the winery invites you to relaxed wine tastings and culinary experiences.
Wine Tasting at Delheim Wine Estate
We recommend a tasting outside on the garden terrace, from which you can even see Table Mountain. Four different wines will be served, which you can select in advance. With the cupcake pairing, you’ll also be served a matching cupcake to go with the four wines – another really great idea.
The Premium Wine Tasting with four wines costs only R 85 (approx. €4.50) and the Reserve Tasting R 150 (approx. €8). Incidentally, Delheim Wine Estate is considered a pioneer in wine tourism, as it was the first winery in South Africa to serve cheese platters and have its own restaurant. These are two aspects that are almost a given in the Winelands today.

Tempel Wines
On our last trip, we stayed outside of town, near Paarl, at the charming Temple Wines* estate. This small, family-run winery boasts a stunning infinity pool with mountain views, cozy cottages, idyllic vineyards, and a fantastic breakfast. The friendly owners—including their five dogs—create a particularly welcoming atmosphere. We would book this accommodation again!
d’Olyfboom Guest House
On a previous trip we met one night in d’Olyfboom Guest House*. This family estate boasts a beautiful garden, vineyards, a small shop, and five stunning guest rooms. The property primarily hosts weddings and conferences.
When we entered our room, we could hardly believe our eyes. The decor is very modern and stylish, with many cool details, such as a red stone wall, the freestanding bathtub, and the small terrace with a view of the mountains. A night with breakfast cost around €95.
African Leisure Hotels
During our first trip through the Winelands, we booked a deluxe room at the African Leisure Hotels near Stellenbosch. The lobby, restaurant, and terrace were still under construction at the time, but our room was already ready. The complex is very modern and features a pool, sun loungers, and great rooms.
In our room, we had a refrigerator, a microwave, a great bathroom with a shower, and a terrace with a view of the surrounding mountains. Everything was very new, very modern, and stylish. We paid just €50 per night. Today, a room there certainly costs more.
Arrival Winelands
We chose to visit the We rented a car for the Winelands (cheaply available via billiger-mietwagen.de*) to explore the region flexibly and freely. From Cape Town, it’s only about 60 minutes to Stellenbosch. With a rental car, you can also take a day trip to some of the wineries.
However, we recommend spending at least two full days there. The area has a truly idyllic charm; accommodations with views of the mountains or vineyards are simply stunning, and you can take plenty of time for tastings and excursions.
Alternatively, you can order an Uber and have it drive you to the Winelands. Uber is considered very safe in South Africa; we’ve had nothing but positive experiences. It’s best to download the Uber app before your trip. In the app, you can see driver reviews, exactly when your driver will be available, and how much the ride will cost.
This way, you don’t have to negotiate the price at the end, and you can’t get ripped off. You can also send a tip to the driver after the ride via the app.
Booking Tours and Excursions
You can also book guided tours online in advance if you don’t want to drive the rental car alone. At GetYourGuide*, you’ll find a variety of options. Most tours depart from Cape Town, Franschhoek, or Stellenbosch.
We’ve listed some very popular tours here. Rides on the cool Wine Tram through the Franschhoek Valley are very popular. This retro train travels to a variety of wineries, making it possible to visit several wineries in one day without having to drive or take a taxi.
