Jasna Ski Resort, Slovakia

A Brief History

In the Middle Ages, iron ore was mined in the caves of Demanovska Valley, and then it was hardly possible to assume that a few hundred years later a modern ski resort with dozens of wonderful slopes would flourish on the local slopes. Nevertheless, by the end of World War I, cottages intended for country holidays began to be built in these places. Over time, a cable car appeared here and a system of ski routes on the mountain slopes was developed. Then ski competitions began to be held here and Jasna gained more and more importance on the ski map of Central Europe. Nowadays, the resort is quite well known on the continent and invariably enjoys the attention of thousands of skiers.

Climate

The weather conditions in the region are considered quite comfortable for skiing. In the winter months, the average air temperature drops slightly below zero, although severe frosts are extremely rare. The clear sun and clean air, saturated with the smell of spruce, are a wonderful addition to the skiing process, and soft fluffy snow is an indispensable attribute of the local slopes. The winter season lasts in Demanovska Valley from December to early April.

Geography of the ski resorts of the Low Tatras

The Low Tatras and their main ski resort Jasna are located in a valley in northern Slovakia near the border with Poland.

The main peak of the Low Tatras is Mount Chopok. On the southern and northern slopes of Chopok, there are lift stations and numerous Jasna trails.

The distance from the Low Tatras to Uzhhorod is 260 km. This is only 3-4 hours by bus charter flights organized by tour operators in the winter. Charter flights from Kiev arrive at the nearest airport in Poprad, 65 km from Jasna.

From the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, to the Low Tatras is 300 km. The closest thermal resort to Jasna, Liptovsky Mikulas, has excellent rail connections with Košice and Bratislava. Jasna itself is located on the D1 expressway. Thus, it is easy to get to the resort from several directions at once and by any type of transport.

Ski slopes

Jasna is divided into 4 skiing areas, located at altitudes from 1000 to 2000 meters and connected by cable car. These include Otupne, Zahradky, Chopok-North and Chopok-South. The first of them is distinguished by gentle slopes and is recommended for beginners, the second is aimed at experienced skiers, and the areas of northern and southern Hopok are more suitable for experts in alpine skiing and specialists who know a lot about overcoming snowy peaks, and at the same time understand the charms of virgin skiing. The resort can also boast of its snow parks, including Maxiland for children, where experienced instructors work with young snowboarders. There are special areas for freeride enthusiasts, cross-country skiers, sleds and other winter sports enthusiasts.

Jasna is a ski resort that will appeal to everyone who loves to ski: skiers, snowboarders, off-piste skiing and sledding enthusiasts. The main difference between Jasna and other Tatra ski resorts is the large number of slopes.

The elevation difference in the Low Tatras skiing area is 950 -2024m. The Jasna skiing area has 18 slopes with a total length of over 50km. The slopes are distributed very well: 6 blue slopes for beginners, 7 red slopes and 5 black slopes for pros. The skiing area is served by 22 lifts!

An interesting highlight of Jasna is the Low Tatras ski pass. With this pass, you can ski on any slopes and use the ski bus for free not only in the Low Tatras, but also in the High Tatras – in Tatranská Lomnica, Štrebske Pleso or Starý Smokovec. The High Tatras ski pass does not have such a magical power. A one-day ski pass for an adult costs from €29, a 6-day pass will cost from €140. Children under 6 years old ski for free when accompanied by an adult. There are discounts for children 6-12 years old, teenagers (12-18 years old) and seniors over 60.

Jasna, like any mountain ski resort in Slovakia, has rental points (€10-12 per day) and ski schools for adults and children from 3 years old.

Sightseeing and entertainment

What to do in Jasna for family members who don’t ski? The infrastructure of the ski resort is honed to a “wheelchair”.

Although Jasna has a skating rink, lots of restaurants and its own nightclub, Jasna cannot boast of a wide selection of entertainment.

One of the most interesting excursions that tourists vacationing in Jasna go on is a trip to the Demänovské Caves, with their amazing stalactites and underground tunnels. No less attractive for curious tourists are the Museum of Nature and Speleology – Liptovský Mikuláš, the P. M. Bohuný Art Gallery, the Liptovský Village Museum – Pribylina, the archaeological element of Celtic culture – Havranok and the wooden articulated church of the Holy Cross.

25 km from Jasná is the largest entertainment complex in Slovakia, Tatralandia, with thermal pools, a huge water park, bowling, a cinema and sports entertainment. You can spend a whole day (if not a week!) there, returning to Jasná in the evening to your beloved skiers.

At the entrance to the Low Tatras valley is the town of Liptovský Mikuláš (30 min. by bus from Jasná) with urban infrastructure, shops, restaurants and festivities.
