More than 70% of the inhabitants belong to the Roman Catholic Church, so it is almost a rule that there is a church in every village. People come here for alpine tourism and beautiful nature. The mountainous west is probably the most visited part of the country, but the big cities are also not left without attention (e.g. Vienna, Graz and Salzburg).

The capital Vienna is located in the east of the country. Its historic center has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001 and has a lot to offer – City Hall, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Parliament Building, Schönbrunn Palace, etc. The next most visited city, whose historic center is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is Graz. Its symbol is the undoubtedly beautiful Clock Tower and Schlossberg Mountain, which is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records and Curiosities as a fortress that no one managed to take (they managed to defend themselves from everyone here, although it is only a small mountain). Graz is a student town, there are six universities.

Vienna city. Austria

The highest mountain in the country is the Grossglockner (3,798 m above sea level). It is located on the border of the federal states of Carinthia and Tyrol in the Hohe Tauern mountains. The Hohe Tauern region was declared a Hohe Tauern National Park in 1981. If you want to enjoy the views of the beautiful mountain, you can head up the very popular Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, which you will enter after a few kilometers if you turn off at Krössenbach to Verleiten.

The Krimmel Falls near the Krimmel town are also very popular. Another very popular place is the area around the mountainous Dachstein massif. The Dachstein offers beautiful but difficult via ferratas and glacier adventures. To its north is also the very popular town of Hallstatt, which together with the Salt Chamber (located above the city) is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Salt Chamber can be reached by train, on foot or using the via ferrata. This area is rich in karst caves and caves with ice inside. Everything is accessible, but if you want to visit everything, you should prepare a large amount of money. Entrances to the caves are expensive, as are the cable cars that will take you up to see magnificent views of the Dachstein massif.

Holidays in Austria: Rettelstein Castle – a small guardian of the Danube

During our cycling trips through Austria, we stopped in the town of Hainburg. This medieval town, over which Hainburg Castle towers, hides many natural and historical secrets. One of them is the ruins of Rettelstein Castle, which is hidden in the embrace of a national park.

Holidays in Austria. If you want to visit this historical and architectural rarity, probably the easiest way is to go down to the Danube embankment. We did the same, and the route described in the following lines gave us impressions that we will remember with pleasure.

But let’s start in order. Near the Danube embankment in the town of Heinburg you can find the exit to the Danube Cycle Route, a small harbor, medieval fortress walls, various restaurants or a park with benches offering relaxation overlooking Europe’s great river. This park is a kind of gateway to the Danube Meadows National Park, in German Donau-Auen. If you wanted to leave your bikes here, we didn’t find a rack, but it was enough to attach a lock to the bench.

The inconspicuous entrance to the national park is marked only by a small sign indicating the name of the park and the rules that must be followed. One of them is the rule that prohibits cycling through the national park, which many visitors ignored during our trip. A sandy path, about 1.5 meters wide, leads through the national park, which soon led us to a tunnel in a cave formed by a conglomerate of rocks, also called breccia. Holidays in Austria. Passing through a several-meter tunnel was a pleasant summer refreshment, because the air temperature that day exceeded 30 ° C. Rock formations with caves accompanied us for several dozen meters. While there were rocks on one side of the road, the beauty of the surrounding area opened up to us on the other. Small “bays”, “island” protrusions overgrown with grass, or trees “growing” out of the water. On the way to our goal, we were accompanied by clouds of mosquitoes and signs for runners with a marked distance. After 2 kilometers, we reached the place. On the grassy lawn stood a massive wall and a signboard that reported on the significance and history of this place. 5 meters further there was a path leading to the stairs, along which we got to the small courtyard of the castle ruins. The courtyard was bordered by railings that protect visitors to this amazing monument from falling. On the railings were information boards about the national park, the fauna, flora in the area and, of course, the history of the castle.

As we learned, Rettelstein Castle, also called Heimenburg (older castle), was smaller than the more famous and magnificent ruins of Heinburg and Devin castles. It stood on a rocky cliff, 30 meters high, and the first mention of it dates back to 1180. As the name of the castle suggests, it was named after the Rettelstein family who lived here. Its purpose is still unknown. It is not known whether it was a border castle or for defense. But, most likely, it served to control trade and fishing on the Danube. Later, other rulers also took turns in the castle, and in the 16th century it was captured by the Turks. Later, it was dismantled for the construction of the neighboring town of Heinburg, so only the remains of the outer wall and the palace wall have survived to this day.

After being saturated with historical facts, we admired the views of the forested area for a while. On the way back on our two-wheeled horses, we drew attention to the literally pebble beaches washed by the Danube. On one of them we stopped, collected a few beautiful pebbles and even shells. We felt almost like at sea. In any case, for all nature and history lovers, for example, during a bike tour in Austria, we recommend a stop in the Danube Meadows National Park, which has been watched over for centuries by Rethelstein Castle.

Австрія пропонує багато можливостей куди відправитися на лижі. Можна вибрати між різними невеликими центрами, які розташовані окремо або є частиною великого комплексу, який поєднує один скі-пас і човниковий рух. Хтось навпаки воліє великий лижний комплекс, окремі частини якого пов’язані багатьма канатними дорогами так, щоб їх система нікому не набридла – і таких тут багато. Потрібно тільки вибрати. Давайте з деякими центрами познайомимося ближче.
