It is included in the list of the most significant monuments in Split and Croatia. At the end of the last century, the object was included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list and was recognized as the best-preserved palace building of the Roman Empire.

The castle was built by Emperor Diocletian, the structure occupied an area of ​​more than 3 hectares. Construction work was completed in 305 AD. Gradually, the population of the city of Salona moved closer to the palace, and Split grew and strengthened around it. The main premises were transformed – the emperor’s mausoleum became a temple, the basements were converted into storage rooms.

Today, the surviving parts of the palace have been renovated and restored and are under the protection of the country’s authorities. There are many cafes, restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops on the territory of the monument.

Old Town

 

Diocletian’s Palace is the old town of Split in Central Dalmatia – a pedestrian zone that is a tangled maze of narrow streets. You can walk around for free, see unique ancient buildings, and be transported back to the era of antiquity.

The best preserved streets are:

  • Cargo or Diocletian’s Street – runs from north to south;
  • Decumanus or Kreshimirova – runs from east to west.

The northern part of the palace was intended for soldiers and servants, while the southern part was where the emperor lived with his family and public buildings were located.

What to see in the old part of the city:

  • Brass Gate, located near the southern entrance.
  • Cryptoporticus – a gallery that runs from west to east.

Guests can visit the vineyard and taste wines of different ages. The drink is served with bread, cheese and prosciutto.

Marjan Park

The park is shrouded in legends, according to one of them the emperor ordered the creation of a recreation area on the mountain for the city’s residents. At that time, there were more than 10 thousand of them.

For some time, the president of Yugoslavia liked to relax in the park and even set up a residence here. In the middle of the last century, this landmark in the city of Split in Central Dalmatia was ennobled – a large number of trees were planted in the park, mostly Mediterranean pine. Today it is a favorite vacation spot for the townspeople.

People come here not only on weekends, but also in the evenings on weekdays. Despite the fact that the park is a favorite vacation spot for the residents of Split, there are not so many people here. Ivan Meštrović Gallery

Once in the city of Split, Ivan Meštrović, a famous sculptor, founded a gallery, which is located in a picturesque palace, in the southern part of Mount Marjan.

The villa, which eventually became a gallery, was built in the period from 1931 to 1939. The project of the house was prepared by its owner – Ivan Meštrović himself.

The boy’s creative abilities were revealed in childhood, when he lived in the small village of Otavici and was inspired by numerous legends, myths and fairy tales of those places. Then the boy was trained by a local stone carver and entered the Academy of Arts.

The master’s popularity was brought by his first exhibition “Vienna Secession”, after the success of Meštrović moved to France. Every historical milestone in the sculptor’s life was reflected in his works.

Meštrović returned to Croatia many years later, and bequeathed his works, as well as the estate and garden, to the country. The gallery opened in 1952, and here you can see sculptures, statues, wood carvings, paintings, and furniture collections. The collection also includes personal photographs of the master. Temporary exhibitions are periodically held in the gallery.

Split Church of St. Domnius Bell Tower

The cathedral is the main temple in the city, where Catholics come to pray, and is a complex consisting of a church built on the site of a mausoleum and a tall bell tower. The temple is named after the patron saint of the city. St. Domnius served as bishop in the ancient city of Salona. He and his family were tortured and killed by order of the emperor.

The main part of the temple was built in the 3rd century, it was the imperial mausoleum. In the 13th century, a hexagonal pulpit on columns, decorated with carvings, was added to the temple, in the 15th century the interior was supplemented with an altar, in the 18th century the choirs were added.

The temple is decorated with wooden doors made by a master from Croatia, Andrije Buvine. The doors depict scenes from the life of God. On the first floor there is a treasury, where the relics of the patron saint of Split and paintings, icons and other works of art are stored.

Promenade

The main promenade of Split is called Riva, its length is 250 meters. A cozy place with palm trees and benches. The street was reconstructed in 2007. It is a favorite place for residents to relax and for tourists to walk. Various events are held here – religious and sports, you can have a snack in cafes and restaurants.

The Riva promenade is a pedestrian alley paved with white tiles, decorated with oleanders and other plants. On the Split promenade you can always see moored boats and yachts. The street begins near the fountain on Franjo Tuđman Square and ends at the intersection with Lazareta Embankment.

Klis Fortress

A construction from the Middle Ages, built on a rock and located a ten-minute drive from the city of Split. At first it was a small fortification, but then it turned into the residence of the monarchs of Croatia. After some time, the castle became a powerful military fortification.

The history of the fortress has more than two thousand years. During this time, the fortress protected the city from enemy raids, it was reconstructed many times. Given the geographical location of the fortress, it was the main structure that protected the inhabitants of Dalmatia.

From afar, it seems as if the fortress merges with the rock. In part, it is so, there are no straight lines in the structure, each structure is harmoniously inscribed in the landscape and, as if, merges with it.

Visually, the fortress consists of two parts. The lower one is located in the western part, it is bounded by Mount Greben. The upper one is higher, located in the east, here is the Opra Tower.

Fruit Square

Among the sights of the city of Split, Fruit Square stands out for its elegance and comfort. Previously, it was the center of a large market. Fruit was sold here, hence the name of the square. Today there are many antique shops and souvenir shops. There are several interesting monuments here – the Venetian Castello, as well as towers dating from the beginning of the 15th century. They were built to protect the city from raids. The northern part of the square is decorated with the Milesi Castle in the Baroque style. In addition, the square has a statue of Marko Marulić – a Croatian poet who lived at the end of the 15th century. In addition to poetry, Marko was a lawyer and served as a judge.

Monument to Bishop Gregory of Nin

The statue looks massive and visually resembles an ancient Greek titan. This work of art immortalizes the memory of a priest who was able to do the impossible. He achieved permission to preach sermons in his native Croatian language.

The monument is massive, its height is 4 meters, made of gray stone. Locals call the statue the full-fledged mistress and patroness of the old part of the city of Split.

Bacvice

There is a bar on the shore, which serves various cool drinks, and the greenery protects from the heat.

Trstenik

A recreation area located near Bacvice and connected to it by a pedestrian path. The surface is pebble, so slippers will definitely be needed. The infrastructure on the shore is developed – cafes and restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas, cabins where you can change clothes. People also come here to go kayaking and yachting.

You can get to this place in Central Dalmatia by city bus or car. It takes only 5 minutes to drive from the center.

Kaštelet

The recreation area forms a small bay, which is located to the west of Bačvice beach. The vacation is favorable for family vacations – the descent into the water is gentle, the water is clear, and warms up quickly. There is a parking lot nearby, cafes and restaurants. One of the most popular establishments where you can taste Croatian cuisine is the restaurant of the same name.

The beach is secluded, conditionally divided into four parts. You can walk from Diocletian’s Palace if you like to walk. If you don’t want to waste time walking, use the bus or rent a bike. The first part of the beach is rocky and rocky. The second part has a playground and a platform for jumping into the water. Then the pebble beach begins, where bars and cafes operate.

Пляжі в окрузі Спліта

How much will a vacation in Makarska in Central Dalmatia cost

The main items of expenditure during any vacation are accommodation and food. Croatia does not belong to the “cheap” countries, but by European standards it is quite suitable for various budget options. What will be the prices for a vacation in Croatia, and in particular, in Makarska, in 2018?

Accommodation

It is simply amazing how such a small town on the Riviera provides such a variety of accommodation options: apartments, villas with pools, flats, hotels … This resort is ready to accept an infinite number of guests, but it is still better to think about the place of accommodation in advance.

Hotel 4 * Meteor, located on the very coast of the Adriatic Sea, with two swimming pools, a tennis court, a kids’ club, has various rooms. This is a hotel with a high level of service, the price range here is from 50 to 200 euros per day – the price depends on the room: from a standard one with 1 or 2 beds to a suite with a separate terrace.

Pension & Apartments Dany 3 * is located 100 m from the beach area. The apartments are surrounded by green vegetation, there is a garden with barbecue, a kitchenette. A double room here costs from 38 euros per day.

Fani 4* Apartments, located 300 m from the main beach and 800 m from the city center, offer a double room for a price of 27 euros per day.

In Makarska hotels, as in all of Croatia, prices for accommodation in the season depend on the season.

Food

In 2018, lunch in a Makarska cafe can fit into 25 euros – it all depends on the choice of dish.

The most expensive will be the fish platter (25 euros), then the prices are as follows:

  • a plate of prosciutto and cheese – 10;
  • a small fried fish – from 8;
  • pasta – from 7;
  • pizza – from 6;
  • beer – about 3.

Almost all the restaurants in this resort are characterized by excellent cuisine, and they are also very clean, beautiful, and cozy – there are many photos of vacationers in Makarska that confirm this. In restaurants, the cost of dishes is already higher. But if you don’t order alcohol, then you can have dinner for two for 40 – 45 euros.

In fast food restaurants in Makarska, as in all of Croatia, the standard set (hamburger, fries, cola) costs 4 – 5 euros. There are many stalls on the city streets, which offer buns for 0.5 euros, pancakes with fillings for 2 euros, and ice cream for 1 euro.

You can also have a snack in pastry shops, where the average prices in euros are as follows:

  • pancakes – 4;
  • croissant with sweet filling – 1.5;
  • a pastry or a slice of cake – about 3;
  • cocktails – from 5;
  • coffee – from 1;
  • coffee with milk (“white coffee”) – about 2.

For light snacks, it is quite possible to buy products in stores. The most affordable prices on the Riviera are in supermarkets of the Konzum, Mercator, and TOMMY chains. For 0.4 – 0.5 euros you can buy 1 kg of fresh vegetables, for 1 – 1.5 – fruit. A loaf of fresh bread, baguette, milk can be bought for 0.7 euros, 1 kg of cheese costs 4 – 8 euros.

Šibenik Coast in Central Dalmatia

There are several resorts on the coast of the Šibenik region, of which Vodič and Primošten stand out. Not far from Primošten, in an area called Bucavac, vineyards were planted by the diligent hands of the inhabitants by exhaustingly pulling out stones and creating regular rectangular, roughly folded stone fences from them, among which only two or three grapevines grew. The entire region is permeated with a dense network of stone fences, so much so that a photograph of this area was exhibited in the UN building in New York as a sign of admiration for human labor. From these vineyards is obtained the famous wine, Red Primošten Babić.

In addition to the Kornati archipelago, which is mostly a national park, there are many inhabited islands in the waters of Šibenik. Murter with four settlements is the leading island of the entire Kornati archipelago, where, in addition to olive growing, cattle breeding, fishing and growing tourism, high-quality wooden ships are still built in Betina to this day. Šibenik

The history of Šibenik begins in 1066, when King Petar Krešimir IV built a fortress at the mouth of the Krna River, which in 1298 received the status of a city, which became the center of a diocese. In 1412, Šibenik, like almost the entire Dalmatian coast, passed to Venice, and in the 15th and 16th centuries. was besieged by Turkey, but was not taken. In 1797, Šibenik was annexed to Austria. During the First World War, the city was occupied by Italy, and after the war it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Šibenik became part of Croatia only in 1992.

The Cathedral of St James

Протягом багатьох років Шибеник був кілька разів значно пошкоджений. Тривалий час місто перебувало під владою різних держав. Найбільше на його вигляд вплинули венеціанці, під час їх перебування в місті було збудовано багато палаців. Тобто, венеціанці … насправді найбільше на наш погляд вплинув найбільший і найкращий будівельник XV століття – Юрай Далматінец. Крім інших важливих будівель, він брав велику участь в будівництві собору Св. Якова(1431-1535), в 2000 р включений в список Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО. У його честь перед собором розміщена його скульптура.

Можливо, ви не знаєте, що собор є єдиним будівлею в світі, де будівельним матеріалом є тільки камінь. Кам’яні куби були точно висічені, а після цього покладені один на одного без використання мокрих процесів. Зовнішні та внутрішні обриси тотожні. Юрай Далматінац проектував для свого часу абсолютно небачений вид апсиди, де зобразив портрети 72 зовсім звичайних людей. Нічого схожого до того часу церковна будівля не містила. Він брав участь в будівництві собору протягом тридцяти років. Будівельні і архітектурні процеси, які були тут використані, не мають аналогів, ніколи до того і ніколи після того вони не були ніде використані. Багато видатних художників і будівельників створювало цей архітектурний скарб понад сто років.

Також в Шибенике можна побачити багато старовинних монастирів і церков, одна з найстаріших – церква св. Хрізогона XII століття. Поруч з нею встановлено дзвін 1266 року знайдений під водою біля острова Сілба(Середня Далмація).

У місті також збереглося чимало середньовічних і пізніших споруд: Палац архієпископа, міська цистерна, Княжий палац, міські стіни.

Міська ратуша

На соборній площі навпроти The Cathedral of St James розташована ще одна пам’ятка Шибеника – старовинна будівля міської ратуші. Побудована в середині ХVI століття двоповерхова будівля виконана в стилі ренесансу.

Фасад ратуші являє собою терасу з колонами і арками – характерну деталь античної архітектури, що захищає приміщення від жаркого південного сонця. Ажурну огорожу тераси другого поверху прикрашають левові голови і квіткові орнаменти.

З боків фасаду через 200 років після спорудження будівлі були прибудовані двоє кам’яних сходів, що ведуть на другий поверх. У 1943 році ця пам’ятка Шибеника постраждала від бомбардувань і в повоєнний час була відновлена ​​у своєму первісному вигляді.

Зараз ратуша втратила своє призначення, урядові кабінети і зал засідань переобладнані в приміщення для реєстрації шлюбів та ресторан.

Церква Святої Варвари (Crkva sv. Barbare)

На одній з вуличок історичного центру Шибеника розташована пам’ятка, яка приваблює безліч туристів – церква Святої Варвари. Будівля цієї католицької церкви було зведено в середині ХVI століття. Спочатку церква була присвячена святим Бенедикту і Миколі, але згодом сталося її переосвячення на честь святої Варвари.

Експонати музею церковного мистецтва відносяться до ХIV-ХVIII століть, але є і раритети, датовані ХІ століттям. Експозиція музею вражає своїм багатством і стильовим різноманіттям, в ній представлені живописні полотна, скульптура, ювелірні вироби, дорогоцінне церковне начиння.

Гавань і порт (Channel-Harbour)

У місті Шибеник (Середня Далмація) пам’ятки є у великій кількості, що не дивно, якщо врахувати його тисячолітню історію. Але навіть якщо б їх не було, вже однією тільки гавані з портом було б достатньо, щоб залишити у його гостей незабутні враження від цього міста.

З червня по вересень в місті проводяться щорічні свята. Найпопулярніші з них – середньовічний костюмований фольклорний карнавал, який проходить на початку осені. Також влітку в Шибенике працює прекрасна органна школа.

У місті є кілька цікавих музеїв, театр і акваріум.

Як дістатися

Шибеник знаходиться недалеко від міст Задар і Спліт, де є міжнародні аеропорти. З ними і іншими великими містами Хорватії він пов’язаний регулярним автобусним сполученням.

Шибеник розташований на Адріатичному шосе. По ньому в місто зручно доїхати з Трогира (58 км) і Задара (64 км).

Туристам, котрі збираються в Шибеник на автомобілі, варто враховувати, що парковка в місті платна, причому влітку її вартість вище.
