Side is one of the oldest cities on the Anatolian coast. It was founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC. As is customary, at that time the main sources of income of the city were piracy and slave trade. Relying on these simple, but extremely effective methods of economic development, the city quickly became rich. In the 5th century BC. they even began to mint their own coin, and this was already a level. The heyday of the city falls on the period of the 2nd century BC – the 2nd century AD. It is the monuments of this historical period that have survived to this day. Among them: a beautiful ancient theater, which can accommodate up to 20,000 spectators, the city wall, the Agora – the slave market, the ancient Roman baths, converted into a museum, the ruins of the temple of the goddess Fortuna. Until the 9th century, Side flourished. However, during the heyday of the Arab Caliphate, it was plundered by Arab invaders and never again reached its former greatness. Side would have remained a small fishing village if the rapid development of tourism in Turkey had not begun in the 1970s. It was he who turned this sleepy town into a popular resort. But even the development of tourism did not bring the city center out of its Greek borders. The Romans, who loved to visit fascinating spectacles, regularly went to this amphitheater to savor the bloody fights of gladiators with large predators, as well as to watch amazing sea battles, for the imitation of which the stage was filled with water. And so that the theater audience felt safe, the stage was surrounded by a one and a half meter wall. Since the fifth century, this ancient theater has become a Christian temple.

Temple of Artemis in Side
