Formigal is one of the most functional ski resorts in Spain. Recently renovated, it is located near the town of Salén de Gallego, which is located in the Valle de Tena valley. The valley itself is part of the Western Pyrenees, located just five kilometers from the French border. This resort is considered the largest in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. In 2008, the base hosted the Junior World Ski Championships, and in 2010, the European Cup final. Even the current King of Spain, Philip VI, a well-known skier, has been spotted on the local slopes on several occasions.

Today, Formigal is a small town that is developing and being built exclusively for the ski resort of the same name. The heart of Formigal is a small built-up residential area around which many hotels and restaurants are concentrated. It is from there that the cable car takes its way, which delivers everyone to the skiing area. The highest point of this ski complex is considered to be one of the peaks, reaching a height of 2250 meters, and the lowest station is located at an altitude of 1510 meters above sea level.

This range allowed the creators of the ski resort to develop several tracks on its territory at once, which are designed for both professionals and those who are just conquering rocky peaks with the help of skis.

The total length of the tracks that attract extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world is almost 140 kilometers. Today, Formigal is a well-established operation of lifts, a high-quality snowmaking system, well-groomed tracks and excellent service that meets the highest international requirements.

How to get there

Naturally, the question arises: how to get to this wonderful ski resort? The nearest airports are in Pamplona (160 km), Zaragoza (165 km), Barcelona (375 km) and Madrid (493 km). Aerophobes or simply fans of land transport can get to Formigal from almost anywhere in Spain by bus, train or car. The nearest train and bus stations are in Sabinillago (35 km) and Huesca (90 km), and only the bus station is in Jaca (57 km). For those traveling by car, there are four free parking lots on the resort’s territory.

Climate in Formigal

The climate in Formigal is classified as moderate. This is explained by sunny and mild winters, as well as warm and cloudless summers. During the winter tourist peak, which falls from November to April, the air temperature in the territory of Formigal ranges from +4 to + 10⁰C, and at the same time in the residential area the thermometer can rise to + 15⁰C.

The winter period in Formigal is characterized by small gusts of wind and clear weather. In summer, the resort is bathed in sunshine, because already in May the air temperature begins to rise noticeably. By July it can warm up to + 38⁰C. Also in summer, morning fogs and a short rainy season can be noted, which lasts two weeks and begins at the end of May.

History of Formigal

The development of the territory of this settlement began more than fifty years ago. It was then that small investors decided to build a ski resort, which soon began to attract restaurateurs and hotel owners. A couple of years later, the first gastronomic centers and a couple of hotels appeared on the territory of Formigal.

Initially, this ski resort attracted exclusively Spaniards. It was small, located not so far from large cities, and most importantly, it was relatively budget-friendly. However, not so long ago, Formigal came under the management of the large Aramon corporation, which also manages the Aramon Cerler, Valdelinares and Panticosa ski resorts.

Immediately after such changes, the ski resort began to develop and be built, many new facilities appeared, and the Formigal ski resort began to attract not only local, but also foreign tourists.

However, despite this, the development of the settlement itself has not moved, no new socially important places are being built in the residential area, and the number of local residents living in the resort on a permanent basis does not exceed 200 people.

Trails, slopes, lifts

So, a little technical data. In total, 137 km of trails of various difficulty levels have been laid here (7 green, 18 blue, 33 red, 39 black, 3 trails for snowmobiles, 2 for cross-country skiing, 1 for sledding, 1 trail for snowboard cross). Some trails are illuminated. The highest point of skiing is 2250 m, the lowest is 1510 m. There are 21 lifts in Formigal with a total capacity of 36860 skiers per hour. Every night, 16 snow machines work on the slopes. 30 km of slopes out of the above 137 are made of artificial snow, supported by 440 snow cannons. The ski season lasts from November to April.

Formigal is divided into four zones – the Tres Ombres Valley or Crestas, Iass or Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet. Each zone has good access and parking. In addition, there is a constant free bus service from Formigal to the main skiing areas.
