Located near the Italian border, Serres-Chevaliers is one of the southernmost resorts in the Alps and the fifth largest ski area in France.

Serres-Chevaliers in France is the largest ski area in the Southern Alps, which borders Italy and the Les Ecrins National Park. It is located in an 8-kilometer valley and consists of three communes – Saint-Chaffret, La Salle les Alpes and Monétier-les-Bains, each of which includes several villages. It is always sunny here and has excellent snow cover. Serres-Chevalier is known as an excellent place for a family holiday – throughout the season there is animation for children, events for all age groups, and favorable rates for family passes are offered. All this, combined with 250 km of excellent slopes, makes Serres-Chevalier one of the most popular ski Rivieras in Europe.

The development of the Serres-Chevalier ski resort began only in the last century, but some of the villages and towns that make up it have a rich history. For example, the city of Briançon was founded in the 10th century and has not only a 1000-year history, but also a large number of interesting attractions.

Serres-Chevalier stretches for seven kilometers along the Guzan Valley, from Briançon, where the first ski school in France was founded in 1902, to the Col du Lothar mountain pass. In winter, it is a gathering place for skiers from all over the world, and in summer, people come here for rafting, trekking, mountain biking and horse riding. The resort is ideal for family holidays – 50% of its slopes are marked “blue” and “green”. In addition, each village has ski schools, kindergartens and leisure centers for young skiers

Trails, slopes, lifts

Serre Chevalier is the snow of the northern Alps under the southern Alpine sun, which shines here 300 days a year. The slopes of the resort have a northern exposure, which, together with artificial snowmaking on the lower slopes, guarantees skiing throughout the season, from late November to late April.

The resort has mountain and cross-country ski schools, snowboarding, and equipment rental.

Serre Chevalier in France has a developed infrastructure: 500 guns for artificial snow, and more than 100 well-groomed slopes. The highest skiing point is at an altitude of 2800 m. The relief of the slopes is very diverse and is suitable for both experienced skiers and beginners. In total, there are 250 km of a variety of slopes in the Serre Chevalier region. Advanced skiers and experts will find a lot of interesting things here. About half of the slopes below 2,200 meters pass through the forest. The forests covering the slopes of the local mountains consist of mighty age-old larches, and the descent under them delivers unforgettable sensations.

Extreme skiers will be interested in the “black” Olimpique Luc Alphand run, named after Luc Alphand, a local celebrity and Olympic medalist, as well as the long Tabuc and Casse du Boeuf runs. Many difficult descents for professionals and amateurs of off-piste skiing are located in the Le Grand Pré and La Montagnola areas.

For The Espace Igle-Fri area is fully adapted for snowboarders. From the top of Serre Chevalier (2491 m) you can go down to the bordercross track. At the Villeneuve station (2200 m) there is a large Serre Chevalier snow park, which includes three different zones. Beginners are recommended to try the easy wide slopes in Chantemerle and Villeneuve, as well as the blue slopes of the neighboring resort of Montier-les-Bains. Those who prefer picturesque forest slopes will like Vallon de la Cucumella.

The resort is part of the ski pass service area of the Grand Galaxy combined ski area (resorts Les Deux Alpes, Alpes-d’Huez and others), but you can also purchase a separate ski pass for the resort – Serre Chevalier Special. Purchased for a period of at least 6 days, it gives the right to ski for one day at one of the resorts of the Grand Galaxy group. Children under 6 and senior athletes over 75 use the lifts for free. Discounts are available for young skiers under 12.

Off-piste skiing

This scheme is in no way a guide to action, but serves only to assess the possibilities of off-piste skiing in the region. Any departure beyond the marked trail must be conscious, all responsibility for possible consequences lies with you.

Freeriding in France is allowed and is progressing, but anyone who goes off-piste should be aware that they do so at their own peril and risk, and that no one will ensure the safety of the off-piste slope. You should not go off-piste without minimal avalanche equipment – a beeper, shovel and probe.

The basis of successful freeriding is a combination of terrain and snow cover. There was enough snow, but let’s talk about terrain in more detail.

Serres-Chevaliers Resort is divided into several skiing zones. The main off-piste skiing zone is Monétier-les-Bains. This is the highest of the villages in the Serres-Chevaliers Valley. From the first row of the lift, you can see short but quite interesting descent options from the side wall to the right of the cable car line (zone 4). These routes are accessible directly from the lower fast four-chair lift. Descents are possible both towards the lift and in the opposite direction (4′) from the same ridge. They have a south-eastern and south-western exposure, respectively, so there is not always good soft snow. Despite the apparent obviousness of the descents, these slopes roll slowly, and you can ride on virgin snow even five days after a snowfall. But this is not accidental: these slopes have a serious slope and a high avalanche danger.

When climbing the next row of lifts, a beautiful view opens up of the slopes with a good slope directly below the cable car (2).

Entry into the Enchanted Forest

The eastern slope is the first to roll after snowfall, but its far part is covered with forest. And it is an enchanted forest (3). We unanimously concluded that the Monétier area in Serre Chevalier is one of the best places for forest skiing among all those we visited. The “Magic Forest of the East” in Monetier is an enchanted key to powder on a serious slope.

Directly opposite this forest, under another lift (if you look at the photo above, to the left), the “northern circus”, in which there is never any sun, as a result – almost always good snow. This lift is called Yret, which is why we also called the circus Yret (1).

A three-chair leisurely lift takes you to point 2800, from which all the main long-distance freeride routes are accessible. One of them begins with a steep descent into the valley to the west and then traverses the neighboring mountain along the stream (5). All other routes start from the Cucumel peak, which is a 15-30 minute walk. But the expanses that open up from this peak are worth much more. There is everything there – shady forested couloirs with eternally soft snow (8, 10, 11), steep passes between rocks (9), sunny descents along a steep wall (7) and across fields to a neighboring village (12). True, at first you will have to spend time on a rather long traverse … This traverse can be started just short of reaching the top of Cucumelle. Where it ends, various descent routes actually diverge to the sides. It is easy to get lost on these routes. Many of them can only be passed with guides who know the routes among the numerous drop-offs and exits to the road between the villages of Monétier and Villeneuve (9, 10, 11).

If you climb Cucumel Peak, attractive slopes open up in the direction of Monétier. We do not recommend them due to the high risk of landslides (and avalanches will descend directly onto the route) and very sharp stones that soft snow only covers, so this wall is not marked on the diagram. The slopes are oriented to the east, and the bright sun does not allow a solid base to form.

Villeneuve is the next village in the valley, the center of the resort of Serre-Chevalier. There is a place to ski off-piste here. On the slope of the ridge separating the Villeneuve and Chantemerle ski areas, the Pres du Bois tow lift is installed, around which there is no track – only a forest, initially simple deciduous (15), lower along the ridge – coniferous, with ambiguous passes (17). If you climb higher on the chairlifts, a panorama of the Chantemerle ski area will open – fairly gentle short descents from local hills with rare steep places. But you need to look in the other direction – to the northwest.

The Balme chairlift not only provides a connection between the Monétier and Villeneuve areas, but also gives access to numerous passes in the couloirs of varying difficulty and width, oriented to the northwest and keeping the snow in good condition (13). If you move further east along the valley, towards the Briançon ski area, freeride will gradually disappear. Yes, you can find short stretches of virgin land near the slopes, but they are quickly developed. If you come to Serra Chevalier to ski off-piste – park in Montier!

Springs and health

The most important place that you simply must visit after an intensive skiing is the Montier Thermal Baths!

This gift of nature, filled with water from a hot spring, was discovered by the Romans. Now it is the Grands Bains du Monetier thermal complex with outdoor and indoor pools, a jacuzzi, Roman baths, a steam room, a musical grotto, a relaxation area and a solarium.

It is located in Montier-les-Bains, where there is a thermal spring with a temperature of about 44 ° C. The complex is considered the largest in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and covers an area of 4,500 sq m, where there are jacuzzis, relaxation areas, a salt grotto, hydromassages, baths, Roman baths, a solarium terrace and an outdoor pool with panoramic views of the Alps, an exclusive “Roman-Irish” area.

There are 29 hotels, 19 residences and club hotels, 11 chalets. The resort can accommodate 37,000 skiers at a time.

Located in La Salle-les-Alpes, 800 metres from Serre Chevalier Villeneuve Ski School, Résidence Odalys Aquisana offers an indoor pool, hammam and ski storage. Pontillas Cable Car is 400 metres from the property. Free WiFi is available.
