Thanks to the Matterhorn peak, the small village of Zermatt, lost in the mountains, has turned into a fashionable international resort, part of the prestigious group “Best in the Alps”.

How to get there

Slopes and lifts

The total length of the Matterhorn region, which includes the Swiss Zermatt and the Italian Cervinia, is about 360 km. They are served by more than 60 lifts: a mountain railway, a “metro”, 19 funiculars and gondolas, 20 chairlifts, two dozen towpaths.

Zermatt lies at the bottom of a narrow picturesque valley, at an altitude of 1620 m above sea level. Ten points where the ropes are thrown are located above 3000 m. The altitude of the region guarantees good snow cover throughout the season; skiing is also possible on the Little Matterhorn glacier in summer.

Above Zermatt there are several ski sectors connected by a common system of lifts. An underground rail funicular takes you to the slopes of Sunnegga (2289 m) – Rothorn (3104 m) from below, from the valley. Easy trails for beginners are located in the Sunnegga area; higher up on the Rothorn there are some nice “red” runs for skiers with intermediate skiing experience. Professionals should pay attention to the steep “black” trail that leads from Vlauherd (2571 m) to Patrullavre (2000 m).

You can get to the Gornergrat (3090 m) – Stockhorn (3405 m) sector via Gant (2223 m) using the 125-seat funicular; from the center of Zermatt – climb in a mountain railway car. Spacious “blue” trails for beginners are located between the Gornergrat and the Riffelberg (2582 m). Skiers with intermediate training like the long descent to Gant. The exit from Hochtal (3286 m) is quite problematic, it can be safely marked “black”, be careful. The northwestern slopes of the Stockhorn, which is reached by a small 35-seater funicular, are a zone of expert, off-piste skiing.

Having descended along the “red” trail (below the Riffelalp – 2211 m – it becomes somewhat more difficult) to Furi (1864 m), you can climb to the Schwarzsee (2583 m) in 8-seater gondolas. There are a couple of uncrowded, medium-difficulty descents here, a good “black” section at the R-buckle, and a few interesting off-piste “routes.” From Furi or Furgg (2432 m), cable cars take you to the Trockener Steg (2939 m) – Klein Matterhorn (3820 m) sector.

From the upper part of the area – excellent conditions for skiers, wide “blue” fields. Skiers with medium experience will enjoy the slopes along the 6-chair lift, as well as the descents in Furgg. The “black” slope, which leads down to Furi, is narrow and winding, and there are often massive blockages on it – be careful, control your speed.

You can cross over to the Italian side of the region via Testa Grigia (3480 m). The easy, wide and light slopes of Cervinia have a predominantly southern orientation. Both skiers with medium training and beginners feel very confident here. The main thing is to keep an eye on the time so that you have time to return to Switzerland before the lifts close.
