In 1931, the first Alpine Skiing World Championship was held in Mürren, organized by British fans – pioneers of this sport. The British actively travel here even now. Also, every winter since 1928, the world’s longest downhill race for professional skiers and amateurs, the “Marathon Inferno”, has been held in Mürren. About 1,800 skiers participate in it.

Historical background
Mürren, a former settlement of the Letchental people, is located in the town of Valais, which is still recognizable by the design of the houses and the pronunciation of the Mürren dialect – the highest, continuously inhabited village in the canton of Bern, lies on a ledge at 1,650 meters, high above the Lauterbrunnen valley.
A two-cable cable car leads to the plateau from Lauterbrunnen, while a funicular leaves from Stechelberg, running between tranquil waterfalls, rocky mountain faces, to the main square of the village of Mürren, and then climbs to the Schilthorn at a whopping two thousand nine hundred and seventy meters.
In 1969, the film crew of the Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service used a futuristic-looking restaurant built on the summit of the Schilthorn for filming: the scene of the imaginary “Pitz Gloria” was to be shot there. The film was a huge success, and with it the Schilthorn cable car and the restaurant.

The development of tourism in this area was largely influenced by the arrival of the British. They arrived here at the turn of the century to have fun with their favorite sport. And of course they succeeded in creating a cozy and friendly atmosphere that reminded them of England.
In 1924, the Kandahar Ski Club was founded in Mürren; this discovery later led to the famous Alberg-Kandahar competition, now considered the unofficial Alpine World Championship.
