Pas de la Casa – Grau Roch is the highest of the ski resorts in Andorra: it is located at the highest point of the Pyrenees Mountains – 2408 meters above sea level. It is a favorite place for professionals, but it is mega-popular not only for that. Pas de la Casa – Grau Roch is located on the very border of Andorra and France, and the capital of the principality, Andorra la Vella, is within easy reach. The distance between it and the resort can be easily covered by both the funicular and the bus, and it will take only 15 minutes. Moreover, if you stay in one of the local hotels, you will not need to go anywhere at all – some of the slopes start right next to the houses. And the quality of the snow here is beyond doubt. Pas de la Casa – Grau Roch is part of the Grandvalira zone, the largest ski region in the Pyrenees, and they take great care of their reputation here. Thanks to this, every year the resort only confirms its status as a great place to relax.

Pas de la Casa is a cozy town with friendly people who easily communicate with tourists in French and English (but among themselves, the native Andorrans conduct conversations and business correspondence exclusively in Catalan). Basically, the townspeople are engaged in the tourist business, they keep hotels, cafes, bars, restaurants, schools for beginner skiers, that is, all their work is aimed at serving visitors. The industry in this settlement is completely undeveloped. However, smart Andorrans benefit from this, positioning their resort region as environmentally friendly. In fact, it is. Those who want not only to have a good time, but also to improve their health come here.

It is important to note that Pas de la Casa has all the conditions for family vacations. Careful townspeople have thought through everything to the smallest detail so that both adults and children can find interesting entertainment here.

How to get there

Andorra does not have its own airport, so you need to go to Pas de la Casa – Grau Roch from neighboring France or Spain. From both the closest airports to the resort in Barcelona (196 km) and Toulouse (160 km), buses run directly from the terminals in Andorra la Vella. And from the capital and its twin brother Escaldes, getting to the slopes is as easy as pie – you need to take a bus to the resort or take the funicular there.

Climate and weather

Pas de la Casa– Grau Roch, as already mentioned above, is located in a mountain valley, which is a bowl. This feature has a significant impact on the weather that forms over this area. Cold air currents that descend, mixing with warm air masses coming from the south, form a climate that is unique in its mildness. This affects absolutely everything. For example, the local snow remains slippery, icy and dry even at a temperature of +8…+10 °C, which allows you to ski, snowboard and sled with comfort.

Clouds usually form below the height of the city, which is why the gentle sun shines here almost all year round. In summer, the average temperature reaches +15…+20 °C, and in winter – +2…-2 °C.

Nature

The city of Pas de la Casa is surrounded by a mountain range with grassy vegetation and low shrubs. 20-25 years ago, centuries-old pines and firs grew here, but during active economic activity they were cut down. However, this does not mean that there are no trees here at all. In the last 10 years, Andorrans have been actively planting coniferous and deciduous trees, thereby decorating the streets and their own homesteads.

The Pyrenean mountain range is open to winds that bring a lot of snow here, so the ski resort of the same name, Pas de la Casa, is considered the snowiest in all of Andorra.

In summer, many medicinal plants and flowers grow on the mountain slopes. During the flowering season, the surrounding area is filled with their aromas. Some avid researchers of the local flora note its similarity to the nature of the Himalayas and do not cease to be amazed by this fact.

Several thermal springs have been discovered in the vicinity of Pas de la Casa, the water from which is used to heat houses in winter and for medical procedures in spa centers, of which there are many here.

The Ariège River originates in the Eastern Pyrenees, which flows in a narrow strip through Pas de la Casa. It is filled not only with numerous springs, but also with meltwater from glaciers. Since ancient times, the local population has been panning for gold on this river, and the coast is rich in marble, alabaster, aspid, coal and other minerals. The Ariège River ends its journey, flowing into the Garonne River in France.

In the same area is the high-altitude Lake Pesson, the shores of which are also arranged for walking and fishing.

Sights

The town of Pas de la Casa received its development in the mid-50s of the 21st century, when the first ski lift was opened on one of the mountain slopes. From that moment on, active construction of the accompanying tourist infrastructure began. Local architects borrowed the architectural style from the French. Houses and other structures were built mainly of stone, which made the town look like a monolithic medieval fortress. However, over the past two decades, large-scale changes have occurred here: the city began to grow with houses and buildings in a modern style. Some of them were built according to unique projects, such as the town hall and the museum of local history and culture.

All guests of Pas de la Casa must visit the popular panoramic restaurant Coll Blanc, which is located at an altitude of 2600 meters. Its windows offer a magnificent view of the sprawling city and French territory.

Attractions include the Funicamp cable car built in 1998, which allows you to conveniently and quickly get from the center of Andorra to the red runs on the upper slopes of the Pas de la Casa resort – Grau Roch and the car tunnel leading to the city of Soldeu, which can be driven through in just seven minutes.

Food

Restaurants in Pas de la Casa will surprise even the most biased gourmet with a variety of dishes. Here, special attention is paid to the quality of cooking and service. This is understandable, because if tourists don’t like something, they are unlikely to return here again. However, according to the advice of experienced people, you should not choose one restaurant, cafe or bar – it is best to visit many of them to fully enjoy the variety of tastes.

All restaurants in Pas de la Casa specialize in national dishes of European countries. This is done deliberately so that visiting Europeans feel at home in Andorra.

The Blau Envalira restaurant serves delicious and satisfying food. The signature meat with potatoes will appeal to many who are not indifferent to this classic dish. It is important to remember that 4% tax and 10% service charge will be added to the bill. The restaurant does not let go of its visitors, offering each of them a glass of excellent schnapps.

From 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the French restaurant El Marselles offers a 20% discount on food. They serve delicious salads, as well as a signature chicken breast in wine sauce that melts in your mouth.

The La Borda restaurant has a wide range of beers. A large glass of this foamy drink will cost only €3. You can also order a meat fondue for €10. The service charge at this restaurant is 15% of the total cost of the order. Thus, here you can have a tasty and inexpensive lunch.

In the French restaurant with the Spanish name El Carlit, they serve a signature lasagna for €17 – the lowest in the whole city.

Comfortable conditions for eating are created in the iconic restaurant La Copa. It is believed that a similar restaurant was once located on the Spanish coast, its regulars were sailors and often pirates. La Copa in Pas de la Casa has an interior stylized as a port restaurant, with inherent sea and ship attributes. Here, mainly, meat dishes are served, which are prepared by the chef on a large fireplace right in front of visitors. In addition, they are treated to cocktails and schnapps for free. True, the prices in this restaurant are an order of magnitude higher than in other restaurants in the city. This is due to the absence of tax and commission fees, which are already included in the cost of dishes.

The Deja Beer bar is notable for its unusual approach to customer service. It opens at 5:00 PM and closes at exactly midnight. An important feature: beer prices here are the lowest. The interior is not typical for most drinking establishments of this kind. In the center of the hall there are taps from which different types of beer are served, and tables are located around them. An electronic scoreboard hangs on the wall, which counts the amount of beer drunk in euros. There is a special place for table football, which can be played for just €1. It should be noted that there are quite a few people who want to compete in the match: they usually play “table against table”.

Pas de la Casa welcomes guests of the city in 49 hotels of various categories. During the period of tourist activity, finding a free room is a difficult task. In most cases, they are already occupied or booked. The average price of a room in a one-star hotel ranges from 18-25 €. Students and people who do not have high demands on the comfort of living conditions stay there. There is a minimum of what a person tired of the road may need in the first place: a shower, a bed and a small kitchenette equipped with a kettle, an electric stove and a microwave. For a hotel fee, you can go online, use the safe, send a fax and park your car in a guarded parking lot.

Rooms priced from 30 to 50 € are available in hotels of the second star category. A TV, a refrigerator, cable or satellite TV, a separate shower cabin and more are added to the above minimum.

Pas de la Casa Hotels

Three-star hotels position themselves in the tourist services market as the most affordable in terms of price-comfort ratio: So, a double room, equipped with everything necessary for a carefree life of tourists, costs 60-70 € per day.

The high price level is maintained by hotels in the four and five star categories. They are decorated not only with convenient and comfortable rooms, but also with spa complexes, wellness rooms, and here you can also use the services of beauticians and masseurs. Prices per night here start at €150, and are then limited only by the size of the guests’ wallets.

Cal Ruiz 3-star hotel

Cal Ruiz is located in the centre of Pas de la Casa, 300 metres from the nearest ski slopes. This small, family-run mountain hotel also has a restaurant. Rooms offer mountain views. Each room has free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV.

Cal Ruiz has simple décor with wooden furniture. All rooms have satellite TV and heating.

The hotel’s restaurant serves buffet meals. Guests can enjoy drinks at the bar and receive a 40% discount on the sports centre.

Pas de la Casa is located in the Grandvalira Ski Resort. There is a ski school 200 metres from the hotel. The ski slopes of Grau Roch and Soldeu are around 20 minutes’ drive away.

Hotel Kandahar 4-star hotel

Set right next to the ski slopes of Pas de la Casa in the Andorran Pyrenees, Hotel Kandahar offers free Wi-Fi and a fine restaurant serving local and international cuisine.

All rooms at Hotel Kandahar have heating and a private bathroom. Each room also has a work desk and satellite TV. Rooms with a terrace and mountain views are available upon request and at an additional cost.

Guests can purchase ski passes or book ski lessons at the Kandahar Hotel’s reception. Free activities are offered every day from Monday to Friday. These include ski tours, free aperitifs on the slopes and free Irish coffee at the bar.

Hotel Panda is located in the centre of Pas de la Casa, near the Grandvalira ski resort. It offers a restaurant with a free Wi-Fi zone and functional rooms with a flat-screen TV.

All rooms at Hotel Panda have central heating and carpeted floors. The private bathroom comes with a spa bath or hydromassage shower. Bathrobes, toiletries and a hairdryer are provided.

Hotel Panda’s restaurant serves French and Catalan cuisine, and a varied buffet breakfast is served in the morning. There are many bars and restaurants within a 5-minute walk of the hotel.

Guests can make use of the ski equipment rental and ski storage facilities. Ski passes can be purchased on site. The ski lift to Grandvalira is just 200 metres away, and the French border is 300 metres away.

Траси, схили, підйомники

Неподалік від міста розташований один з найпопулярніших і великих гірськолижних курортів князівства Андорра Пас-де-ла-Каса – Грау Роч. Перших лижників він прийняв в далекому 1957 році. Складається він з двох долин-схилів, на яких влаштовані різноманітні траси, які підходять як для новачків, так і асів гірськолижного катання. Сучасна система підйомників дозволяє в лічені хвилини підніматися на вершину гір. Нещодавно тут відкрили новий підйомник Funicamp, оснащений кабінами на 24 і 32 місця. До зони катання на ньому можна доїхати за 15 хвилин. За цей час туристи можуть насолодитися красою природи.

У найвишчий частині долини розташовані траси для досвідчених лижників і сноубордистів. Вони характеризуються різкими перепадами висоти і складністю. Траси трохи нижче по схилу призначені для початківців. Тут же обладнана слаломна траса для нічного катання. Вона добре освітлена і досить широка, щоб на ній могло кататися відразу багато людей без небезпеки зіткнень.

Зона катання Пас-де-ла-Каса – Грау-Роч умовно ділиться на дві половини. Вважається, що перша – Пас-де-ла-Каса – підходить для професіоналів, а друга – Грау-Роч – для початківців і трохи більш досвідчених лижників. Втім, щороку знаходяться ті, хто успішно доводить зворотне.

Перепад висот становить 2-2,6 км. Протяжність трас приємно здивує любителів різноманітності – 100 км при площі 626 га. Сюди входять 55 трас, з яких новачки можуть кататися на 8 «зелених», просунуті лижники – на 11 «синіх», досвідчені – на 23 «червоних», а професіонали – на 13 «чорних».

Підйомників тут 33 штуки, серед них велика частина бугельних, інші крісельні. Вони продумано розподілені за двома долинами, і черги на них бувають вкрай рідко.

Пас Де Ла Каса підійде як для новачків, так і для професіоналів. Верхній район Пас Де Ла Каса багатий екстремальними і крутими спусками, що позначають чорним і червоним кольором.
