The Andermatt ski resort is located on the northern slope of the St. Gotthard Pass in Central Switzerland, not far from St. Moritz and TsermattTheregionconsists of four parts: Gemstock, Netschen, Winterhorn, Rielp.

Its main advantages are excellent transport connections with all regions of the country and Europe (the village lies at the intersection of several highways and railways) combined with an interesting relief. Around the resort, several mountain ranges rise at once – Gems-Stock (2961 m) in the south, Rosboden-Stock (2835 m) in the east, Stöckli (2489 m) in the northeast and Spitzberg (2934 m, as well as the side peak of Mütterlishorn (3058 m) in the northwest. As a result, a huge variety of conditions for recreation is formed, especially taking into account the numerous, albeit small, glaciers, as well as beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys.
Andermatt became a resort only at the end of the 19th century, when luxury hotels began to grow like mushrooms in the village. Many of them still welcome guests. The ski lift appeared here in 1937, it became the second in Switzerland. Today, the home skiing region of Andermatt consists of four parts: Gemsstock, Notschen, Winterhorn, Rialp. The slopes are more suitable for experienced riders, but the resort has all the conditions for beginners. A ski school is open for them. For cross-country skiers, there are 20 km of picturesque slopes at an altitude of 1447 m.
Andermatt recently merged with neighboring Sedrun into the largest ski area in Switzerland. The project includes the construction of five new lifts and the replacement of eight existing ones, thus increasing their total number to 24.

Historical background
Once upon a time, Andermatt was an ordinary mountain village, famous only for Suvorov’s crossing of the Alps. But Then came the Egyptian billionaire Sami Sawiris, who saw a chance to turn a quiet province into Switzerland’s largest tourist resort and… almost won!
In recent years, a number of construction and development projects have indeed changed the landscape of Andermatt and its surroundings almost beyond recognition, not to mention the lives of people. A creative duo of Swiss photographers documented the process of the strange transformation of the once remote region of Switzerland.
The new mega-resort was originally conceived in the format of a project that was supposed to differ from other Alpine resort regions in literally everything. More luxury? Yes, more! And now at least six top-class hotels are already being built here! Luxurious accommodation for businessmen from Milan and Zurich? Absolutely! And now those who wish can choose from almost five hundred apartments, to which is added practically its own Palace of Congresses with an indoor pool.

How to get there
The resort is located in central Switzerland. The nearest international airport is Zurich (140 km). From there, trains run to Andermatt. On one of them you need to get to Zurich’s Zürich Hauptbahnhof railway station, where you can change to a train going to the Göschenen stop, then change again to the famous Glacier Express. The train to Andermatt goes slowly through a winding road. Rail connections are also established with other cities: you can get here by train from Lucerne, Bruno, Davos, Laax, Visp.

Skiing holidays
The ski region consists of four parts: Gems-Stock, Winterhorn (2460 m) and Realp (1536 m) in the south, as well as the northeastern region of Nechen – Gutsch (3244 – 1842 m), to which the young ski region of Kalmoutier – Val, or simply Oberalppass, which lies to the east, behind the pass, is often added. Oberalppass, as well as the adjacent areas of Hospenthal, Göschenen, Wassen and Gurtnellen.
In total, there are about 23 marked trails with a total length of 125 km (50 km “blue”, 42 km “red” and 33 km “black”). A characteristic feature of the local slopes is the alternation of long and relatively narrow trails of the upper sections with very wide “clearings” of the lower slopes, as well as their northern orientation (only the Nechen – Gutsch area is oriented to the southwest), which allows you to maintain good snow cover at any time of the season. In general, the slopes are short (maximum – 4 km), and the height difference is small (up to 800 m), but the interesting and varied terrain significantly enhances their attractiveness. In addition, there are the widest opportunities for freeriding – almost all the mountain ranges around Andermatt are perfect for this type of recreation, but especially popular Gurshengrat (2260 m) and Winterhorn (2660 m).

The slopes are served by 13 lifts (6 towable) plus 6 more in the Oberalp area. There is a fun park with two half-pipes (one of them is considered the highest in the country – 2015 meters above sea level), a bordercross area, a toboggan run (height difference – 398 m), about 28 km of snowshoe trails and about the same cross-country skiing, ice rink, indoor swimming pool, more than 70 km of hiking trails (35 km – winter), mountaineering and ice climbing schools. Equipment rental, several ski and snowboard schools, as well as the Avalanche Training Center on Gems-Stokke.
