Trogir is located two dozen kilometers north of Split. It is rightly called a museum city. The historical part of Trogir is located on an island, far from the mainland, and for a beach holiday, tourists go to the island of Ciovo. Palaces, temples, fortresses and a cunning network of narrow streets distinguish Trogir from other cities in Croatia.

Trogir is a small Croatian resort, which, unlike neighboring Split, is more cozy and not so crowded. The historical center is on the list of objects protected by UNESCO. Undoubtedly, Trogir in Croatia is worth visiting. If you have previously had a vacation in other Croatian settlements, Trogir will not disappoint you and will even surprise you.

The city was founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and everything that may interest a tourist has been preserved here – palaces, temples, fortresses, museums. The local population lives mainly on the mainland and on the island of Ciovo, to find itself on it, it is enough to cross the bridge from the old part of Trogir.

The best beaches are concentrated on the island of Ciovo, many tourists prefer to rent accommodation here, and come to the old part for excursions and sightseeing.

Trogir is a charming, small town with whitewashed walls and red roofs. To see it and feel the spirit of Dalmatia, just climb to one of the observation decks.

It is best to walk early in the morning or late in the evening. At this time, the city streets are completely empty, which gives Trogir a special charm. During the day, you can use the services of a guide who will not only show you the most interesting sights, but also tell you a lot of interesting things.

If you do not live in Trogir, visit the resort on a sea tram. A trip along the Adriatic Sea will bring a lot of pleasant emotions, the trip is full of picturesque landscapes of Croatia.

Outwardly, Trogir resembles the castle of Emperor Diocletian in Split – it is a smaller copy of it. Be sure to visit the Kamerlengo Fortress, built in the 15th century, from its observation deck you can enjoy amazing views of the entire city.

Trogir Sights

All the main attractions of Trogir are concentrated in the old part of the city, it is here that travelers from all over the world come.

Cathedral of St. Lawrence

The temple is located on John Paul II Square and, as it were, dominates the city. Previously, a church was located on the site of the cathedral, destroyed in the 12th century. Later, in 1193, construction of a new temple began, which was completed several decades later.

The modern version of the temple is a building with three naves in the Romanesque style, the architectural ensemble is complemented by a bell tower in the Gothic style.

A distinctive feature of the cathedral is the Romanesque portal, built in the middle of the 13th century. This is the most valuable example of the art of local masters.

The portal is decorated with scenes on biblical themes, there are images of plants and animals. Artists also came up with symbolic images for each month of the year, for example, December is a hunter fighting a boar, and February is a girl with a fish. On both sides of the portal are sculptures of Adam and Eve, they are depicted on the backs of predators – a lion and a lioness.

The chapel also deserves close attention, it was built in the period from 1468 to 1472. Inside, there are 12 sculptures of the apostles and a sarcophagus with the remains of the first bishop of Trogir – Saint John.

The interior of the temple is quite simple – the pulpit, built in the 13th century, is made of stone and covered with statues. The seats are wooden, and the altar is decorated with paintings.

Undoubtedly, the main decoration of the temple is the 47-meter-high bell tower, which was rebuilt twice – in the 15th and 16th centuries. The window openings are decorated with carvings. Having climbed the bell tower, tourists find themselves on an observation deck, from where an amazing view of the entire Trogir opens.

Belfry of the Church of St. Michael

If you do not visit this attraction of Trogir, the trip will be incomplete. From the observation deck of the bell tower, amazing views of the white walls and tiled roofs open up. You can also see the blue sea, the island of Ciovo.

The bell tower is located opposite the Temple of St. Lawrence. From the outside, the attraction looks very picturesque, tourists are attracted by the Italian architecture that dominates this part of Croatia. The blue dial on the white walls is a symbol of Trogir. The tower dominates the city, so it is here that one of the best observation decks is built, from where you can see not only the resort, but also the sea, green hills, and mountains in the distance.

The stairs leading to the observation deck are very steep, it is quite difficult to climb. In addition, the steps are narrow, in some places even two people can hardly pass each other, but the view from the top is worth the effort.

Kamerlengo Fortress

The city has several defensive structures, each of which is a real open-air museum, but the main attraction of Trogir is considered to be the Kamerlengo Fortress. Enemy troops from Venice repeatedly tried to capture the city, when they succeeded, they built a fortress here, which became the largest defensive structure in Europe. The fortress was able to withstand the longest siege, thanks to which the Italians were able to stay in Trogir for a long time.

The monument has a completely unique atmosphere, which can be felt while walking around the courtyard and looking at the ancient coats of arms of Venetian noble families. Scenes from historical films are often shot on the territory of the fortress, and in the warm season festivals and various cultural events are held here.
