Engelberg is a Swiss ski resort that has been welcoming athletes for many years. It is located in the canton of Obwalden, 35 km southeast of Lucerne, at the foot of Mount Titlis (3239 m).

Engelberg is a very small town in Switzerland with a population of about 4,000 people. Tourists who come here to ski and ski jump will not be able to get lost. The main street of the city, Dorfstrasse, is home to most of the shops and restaurants, and there is a tourist office on Klosterstrasse, not far from the train station.

Engelberg has brought Switzerland world fame, because it hosts important winter competitions: the Ice Ripper Style Trophy snowboard tournament is held in November, and the following month – the European Cup with night ski jumping.

In Engelberg, any guest quickly gets used to it and begins to feel at home. It is especially nice that in the morning you can wake up not from the noise of cars (from the traffic in the resort – only a free shuttle bus), but from the sun peeking into the room. The resort is picturesque at any time of the day, but in the evening it literally transforms when the surrounding peaks are lit up with snowmobile lights and the streets turn into a picture from a Christmas card.

What Engelberg offers to skiers

Mount Titlis

Considering the fact that of all the mountains in central Switzerland, Titlis is the highest, and the Jochpass Pass, known as the center of the ski area of the same name, is one of the snowiest places in the area, it is not surprising that the slopes here are of excellent quality. Moreover, Engelberg uses structures that intensively create artificial snow.

The ski season lasts from early November to mid-May, but you can ski on glaciers and jump from a ski jump in Engelberg for 9 months of the year.

General characteristics of the resort’s slopes

Engelberg is located in a valley at the foot of the huge Titlis glacier (3239 m), and you can ski and snowboard in either of two separate areas around the resort. More simple, recommended mainly for beginners and families with children, the Bruno area on the northern slopes of the valley offers more than a kilometer of elevation gain and is served by five lifts. There are not many slopes in this area – 12 km, including 5 km of red, and the location and relief of the slopes will allow children and adults who have recently started skiing to feel comfortable and confident.

The second, more extensive region is located south of the resort and offers an extremely interesting and varied terrain of the slopes. To warm up, skiers can enjoy the blue and training runs on the Gerschnialp plateau (1,250 m). Higher up is the larger Trebsee (1,800 m) with a frozen lake, from where you can take the cable cars to the rather difficult runs on the northern slopes of Titlis. The upper station of the Klein Titlis lift is at an altitude of 3,028 m, and the Joch Pass at an altitude of 2,207 m can be reached by cable car. Having climbed the slopes of Jochstock (2,564 m), it is worth going down the southern hilly and sometimes gentle slopes towards Engstlenalp or back, north along fairly steep sections to Trebsee. This skiing area is served by modern lifts, red and black runs predominate here. Freeriders and “slope-fighting” enthusiasts will appreciate the lower half of the impressive three-kilometer run that leads from the Titlis from the Gletscherlift to the Stand (2,428 m). And you definitely shouldn’t miss the real gem of Engelberg, a 12-kilometer route with a 2,000-meter drop from the Titlis down to the resort. Snowboarders and lovers of fun on the slopes can jump in abundance in the Stand’s fun park or in the half-pipe on the Jochpass.

Main slopes

The main area is located a little further south and has a very original landscape: 2 a large-scale plateau. First, Gerschnialp (1250 m), where there are rope tows and “blue” trails, then Trübsee (1800 m), where there is a frozen lake. From Trübsee, you can go higher in a cabin to Klein Titlis (3028 m), to the northern part of Titlis with difficult routes, or take the chairlift to the Joch Pass (2207 m). There are several directions from Joch you can go further:

go back north and along a rather difficult slope, where you can do ski jumping – to Trübsee;
return to the hilly and sometimes sloping slopes from the south, leading to the Engstlenalp;
climb Jochstock (2564 m).

Ski lift

There are 21 lifts serving the southern sections. There are 73 km of marked routes in these sections, with the majority of them being difficult. Even for those professionals who have repeatedly skied from the Engelberg ski jump, the lower part of the Roteg route from Titlis is a serious challenge – it goes along a glacier with many crevasses, along steep and icy sections without snow.

Snowboarder Jumping Ramps

There are also good places for snowboarders, including the well-equipped fun park on the Stand slope with jumping ramps and the Terrain Park near Yohu, which has a quarter pipe, big airs, half pipes, and jumping ramps. There are 3 routes for sledding enthusiasts with a total length of 2500 m.

Ski passes

For skiing and ski jumping on Engelberg Titlis, you can buy a ski pass for one or several days. Moreover, if the days are consecutive, then with an increase in the number of days the cost of each of them becomes less.

Children

Engelberg is a real family resort, and children are treated with special reverence. Sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, an ice rink, an adventure park, excursions – only a small part of the special children’s program. On Tuesdays, cartoons are shown in the ski school near the Titlis lift station (from 18.00 to 20.00, 6 CHF). Upstairs there is a real igloo village, where you can learn how to build a snow house just like hundreds of years ago. In addition to traditional active games and entertainment, the sports center offers climbing courses (from 10 years old). The Swiss Ski School has a kindergarten for children over 2 years old. You can send your child for the whole day or for a few hours, with lunch. Children over 3 years old learn the basics of alpine skiing from 9:15 to 12:45 (including lunch).

What else can you do in Engelberg

In addition to skiing and ski jumping in the high season, or in the summer, when the weather in Engelberg is not conducive to such sports, you can find other types of entertainment.

Active recreation

There are 14 ski shelters right next to the slopes, and there are many cafes and restaurants. There is also something to do in the town itself: tourists can enjoy restaurants, discos, a cinema, a casino, a massage parlor, a solarium, and there is also a sports center with a swimming pool, a tennis court, an ice rink, and a climbing wall. In summer, cycling and hiking (a type of sports hiking) are popular.

Titlis Cable Car

Engelberg is located at the foot of Mount Titlis, which is lined with hiking trails, mountain bike and scooter trails – in the summer, many events are organized here. You can climb to the top not only on foot – in 1992, the world’s first cable car with rotating cabins was built. There is a unique ice park on the mountain with an ice cave, a panoramic restaurant and a karaoke bar await visitors. In addition, from a height of 3239 m, very beautiful photos of Engelberg in Switzerland are obtained.

Small Lake Trübsee

There is an ideal place in Engelberg for hiking enthusiasts in the Alps – the surroundings of Lake Trübsee. A hiking trail runs from the lake, which can be reached by lift, and further through the Joch Pass – the path along it is interesting with views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Trübsee.

In summer

Relaxation and nature alone with lush green meadows, white snow, gray rocks, red peaks and blue mountain lakes. 360 kilometers of hiking trails and many kilometers of railways and lifts – all this makes you want to explore the valley again and again. A wide range of activities, from abseiling to wood carving, promise an exciting pastime. Several themed excursions provide a great opportunity to explore the countryside on foot. The hiking paradise Trübsee, a popular starting point for tours to several mountain lakes, is located halfway to Titlis. Other active leisure options include climbing one of the four cliffs, paragliding, rafting and canoeing, and cycling. And playing on the 18-hole golf course will be no less exciting.

You can also treat yourself to a relaxing open-air whey bath in summer or the warm Brunni sauna in winter. There are many other ways to improve your health: sea bath, whirlpools, Kneipp methods of cleansing toxins, beauty sessions and much more. In the Sports Park you can also go ice skating, figure skating, tennis, badminton, climbing, swimming in the outdoor and indoor pools.

Overview of cultural monuments

Benedictine Monastery

Those traveling to Switzerland, Engelberg attracts not only skiing, but also various attractions. In 1120, a Benedictine monastery was built here, which is still active today. The main church of the complex was built in 1730, its design is made in the Rococo style.

A cheese factory operates on the territory of the monastery complex – it is a small room with glass walls, through which visitors can observe with their own eyes all the stages of cheese making. By the way, in the souvenir and cheese shop on the territory of the monastery complex you can buy not only cheese, but also yogurts made here – you will not find such products in city stores.

The monastery complex is located east of the railway station, and can be visited:

Titlis and the Rotair cable car – the highest point of the glacier excursion, the longest ski run and snowboard park in Central Switzerland are accessible by this cable car.

Центральний залізничний вокзал Цюріха

Від залізничного вокзалу Цюріха до Люцерна відправлення поїздів відбувається кожних півгодини, дорога триває 2 години, квиток другим класом коштує 34 CHF.

З Женеви відправлення поїздів відбувається щогодини, за квиток потрібно заплатити трохи дорожче, ніж при поїздці з Цюріха.

Автобус від залізничної станції Енгельберга

У сезон від залізничної станції Енгельберга до схилів можна доїхати на автобусі, що безкоштовно доставляє туди лижників.
