Radon treatment is successfully used in several places in Europe. However, nowhere else in the world is there such a variety of radon treatment options as in Gastein.

This diverse effect on the body fights chronic inflammation and allergies and contributes to long-term pain relief. The long-lasting heat, for example in the Gastein healing galleries, leads to a mild therapeutic heat with an additional healing effect. The high-altitude Alpine location of Gastein also contributes to the positive effect.
Due to the interaction of all components, the Gastein treatment is a very effective natural therapy for the treatment of a number of diseases.
Thermal water, steam baths and the Gastein healing galleries are the three treatments used in this therapy. Depending on the severity and type of disease, as well as the health status of the spa guest, an individual therapeutic program is drawn up.
Radon therapy is particularly effective in the treatment of chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system, respiratory tract and skin. In addition, radon therapy is an excellent immune prophylaxis.

The noble gas radon enters the body through the skin and lungs, and its daughter products settle on the skin. This releases soft alpha radiation. This stimulates the body’s self-healing abilities on several levels:
- The regenerative work of cells is activated
- The number of aggressive free radicals is reduced
- The mediator TGF-Beta1 is activated, which promotes healing and reduces inflammatory processes
- The effect of the pain mediator Substance P is reduced
- The amount of beta-endorphin increases and a positive effect on serotonin metabolism is observed
The dose of radon entering the body is an indicator that is fundamentally important for treatment. In thermal water, as well as in therapeutic galleries (adits), its dose is extremely small and therefore has an exceptionally positive effect on the body.
The number of visits to underground galleries depends on the specific disease and the stage of its development. An extract from the medical history can be provided by the treating therapist or doctors directly from the sanatorium. Radon has the same rules of use as other drugs – careful dosage in each specific case.
High levels of radiation are dangerous for the body, and low doses of radon, on the contrary, are useful. At low doses of radon, the cell repair system is strengthened, chromosome damage is reduced, and the body’s immune status is improved.
The unique climate inside the Gastein tunnels activates the repair work of cells. Anti-inflammatory mediators are released that promote recovery. Immunological balance is established. In addition to relieving pain, this therapy is also an excellent means of maintaining health and immunoprophylaxis.
