Remember the days when the Waldorf Astoria New York reigned supreme in the Big Apple and the U.S.? What a scene it was! But times, they are a-changing.
Back in 2015, a whopping $1.95 billion put the hotel in Chinese hands. By then, its glory days had faded—it originally flung open its doors in 1931. Fast forward to 2017: doors closed for a planned $1 billion facelift. No one planned on it dragging due to “a little bit of this,” “a little bit of that,” like corruption and—you guessed it—a global pandemic.
Finally, a ray of sunshine! The Waldorf Astoria reclaims its spot on the NYC skyline. As of today, folks, it’s a new chapter for this iconic spot.
Waldorf Astoria New York: A Fresh Start After Renovation
The Waldorf Astoria New York is back and open as of July 15, 2025. Hats off to them for picking up the pace! After a saga of delays, they’ve debuted earlier than the planned September showcase. Yes, indeed!
Gone is the old Waldorf we knew. From over 1,400 rooms, they’ve carved it down to 375 hotel rooms and 372 swanky residences. The upsized rooms now kick-off at 475 square feet—most are considerably more spacious.
The big idea? Keep the classic charm while doling out a techie makeover. Here’s a glimpse:
In comes “Lex Yard,” the hotel’s culinary crown jewel. A nod to both Lexington Avenue and the legendary underground Track 61. Culinary maestro Chef Michael Anthony helms this American Brasserie, with an ever-evolving American fare menu to make you swoon.
But wait! The top-notch Guerlain Wellness Spa isn’t set to open until late 2025. Mark your calendars or set a reminder!
Waldorf Astoria’s Rates & Points: What’s the Damage?
Alright, deep breath. Curious about cash rates post-reopening? They range from around $1,100 to $1,800 a night before taxes—come winter, spring, or a random Tuesday night.
If you’re shelling out cash, hop on the Hilton for Luxury train. It’s laden with goodies: breakfast, credit, possible upgrades, and more. Give Ford a holler at ford@fordbtravel.com to navigate these sweet deals.
Not into splurging cash? You can redeem Hilton Honors points—150,000 a night. Elite members, here’s a perk: book four nights and snag the fifth for free. Bam, your night now averages out to 120,000 points.
Love points? Here’s the cherry on top: each Honor point is worth about 0.5 cents. So, expect to fork out roughly $600-$750 a night post-tax. Not too shabby, eh?
The New Waldorf Astoria: Thoughts?
All said and done, I’m gearing up to grace the new Waldorf Astoria New York on my next city jaunt. A few musings:
- Let’s face it. U.S. service can’t hold a candle to many global destinations. It simply is what it is.
- At 375 rooms, it’s less “boutique,” more “mini-resort.” Curious to see how that plays out with service.
- Remember those 600 square foot room whispers? They now stand at 475 square feet. It’s a decent size upgrade, but come on, 125 square feet is noticeable!
- Footnote: Those design renderings? Not exactly knocking my socks off with a visual “wow.” But hey, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right?
- Elsewhere, Waldorf Astoria’s brand is upleveling with standout spots. Just wait for the Waldorf Astoria London Admiralty Arch in 2026. That’s the one I’m really excited about!
Fancy a ski escape? Check out the Val Seny ski resort for a change of scene.
Closing Remarks: My Two Cents
Lift your glasses—the Waldorf Astoria New York flings open its doors as of July 15, 2025. It’s a whole new beast compared to its pre-2017 days. Though I lean toward the exclusive feel fewer rooms bring, this is undeniably a splendid addition to the NYC lodging lineup. Here’s to getting a firsthand look!
