Finding really nice accommodations in Morocco wasn’t all that easy. Especially on a longer tour, you don’t want to end up in just any hotel every night. Good reviews, a special atmosphere, and the location were always particularly important to us. We selected our riads, kasbahs, and hotels based on these criteria.

Before our almost three-week tour from Fez across the desert to the Atlantic, we spent countless hours researching. We read reviews, compared reviews, and asked ourselves where it was really worth staying.

During our trip, we received a lot of questions on Instagram. Where did you sleep? What were your experiences with riads in Morocco? Now we’re back and sharing our accommodation list with you. Here you will not only find the places where we stayed ourselves, but also a few hotels and riads that were on our shortlist.

If you are looking for personal recommendations and want to know which riads in Morocco are really worth it, you have come to the right place. Perhaps you will find something for your own trip. Enjoy browsing!

2. Types of Accommodation in Morocco

When searching for accommodation in Morocco, you’ll often come across the terms riad, dar, kasbah, or maison d’hôtes. Today, these terms are often interpreted more loosely, so what they say isn’t always what you get. Here’s a brief explanation:

Riad: A riad is a traditional townhouse with a courtyard or garden. They often feature fountains, plants, or mosaics. Riads usually appear simple from the outside, but are all the more beautiful inside. Many are located in the heart of the medina and have been converted into charming guesthouses.

Dar: A dar is the simpler version of a riad. There is usually no garden, just a small courtyard or patio. These houses are often quiet, family-run, and very authentic.

Kasbah: A kasbah used to be a fortified mud fortress or manor house, especially in the countryside or oases. Today, you can often find boutique accommodations with thick mud walls, roof terraces, and plenty of atmosphere.

Maison d’hôtes: Maison d’hôtes simply means guesthouse. The term is used for many privately run accommodations, whether riads, kasbahs, or modern houses. They are usually lovingly furnished and very personally run.

Auberge: An auberge is a simple guesthouse or country hotel. You often find this type of accommodation outside of cities, for example, in the Atlas Mountains, on the edge of the desert, or along major travel routes. The furnishings are usually simple, but breakfast, sometimes dinner, and a relaxed, family atmosphere are included.

3. How much does accommodation cost in Morocco?

Accommodation in Morocco is often surprisingly affordable compared to Europe. Nevertheless, there are big differences depending on the region, standard and season. A few years ago, many riads were still considered real insider tips. Charming, affordable and often almost empty. Today they are much more in demand and prices are slowly rising, especially in popular cities like Marrakech or Fez.

Simple riads, dars or auberges

  • from approx. €30–50 per night in a double room
  • usually with breakfast, often very charming, but simply furnished
  • perfect for budget travelers or short stopovers

Mid-range accommodations

  • approx. €60–100 per night in a double room
  • Often stylish riads, beautiful guesthouses or small hotels with more comfort
  • Breakfast almost always included, sometimes pool or terrace

Upscale riads, boutique hotels & kasbahs

  • From €120 upwards, depending on location and amenities
  • Special architecture, high-quality design, good food
  • Ideal for couples who want to treat themselves

Desert camps in Merzouga or Erg Chigaga

  • Simple camps from approx. €40–60 per night
  • Luxury glamping from €100–250 per night
  • Usually includes a camel ride (please don’t do this!), dinner, music & Breakfast

4. Our Accommodations in Morocco

Marrakech: Riad Dar El Qadi

The Riad Dar El Qadi* is located in the heart of the medina, just a few minutes’ walk from Place Jemaa el-Fna – yet on a rather quiet side street. Ideal if you want to be in the center of things but still want to sleep at night.

We had a beautiful, spacious room (superior double room) with a sofa, large double bed, bathroom with shower, and seating area. The rooms and suites are generally differently designed and furnished in a traditional Berber style (but modern).

We particularly liked the roof terrace, where you could relax, and the stylishly furnished courtyard. Breakfast was classic Moroccan with bread, pancakes, coffee, jam, and fresh orange juice.

Riad Dar El Qadi – our conclusion

We thought the location was great, the facilities were superb and the breakfast on the roof terrace was really nice. It was also pleasantly quiet – but important to note: The riad is not suitable for wheelchair users, as the stairs are very narrow and steep.

  • Location: in the heart of the medina in a quiet location
  • Price: €135 per night including breakfast (May)
  • Style: cozy, traditional, modern, comfortable
  • Suitable for: couples, friends, solo travelers, small families

Marrakech: Riad Chocolat

In Marrakech we also spent two nights at the Riad Chocolat*. It is a small, traditional riad with lots of charm. It’s located on the edge of the medina, about a 15-20 minute walk from Djemaa el-Fna, in a quiet alley near Bab Ghemat.

To be honest, we felt a little unsafe at first, simply because the area seems so untouristy. But after a short time, it became clear: There was no reason to worry. The neighborhood was friendly, the district authentic – and that was precisely what made it so appealing.

The riad is lovingly furnished, with warm colors and an incredible number of details that create a very cozy atmosphere. Our room was spacious, clean, and stylishly decorated. We particularly enjoyed the roof terrace with its plenty of seating and sun loungers (but no view of the city).

The breakfast was delicious, freshly prepared, and also served in the courtyard – with Moroccan classics, along with fresh fruit, yogurt, and tea. The hostess and the entire team were incredibly welcoming and immediately made us feel welcome.

Riad Chocoloat – Our Verdict

We especially loved the hosts and the cozy atmosphere. The location is a bit out of the way, but it’s quiet and authentic. There’s a mosque right next to the riad, so you should get used to the call to prayer—it’s part of the experience.

  • Location: a bit off the beaten track in the southeast of the medina (local area)
  • Price: €113 per night including breakfast (May)
  • Style: cozy, colorful, lots of details, individual
  • Suitable for: couples, friends, solo travelers (no children allowed)

Marrakech – Riad Instant T

The Riad Instant T* was our third riad in Marrakech – modern, quiet, and with a truly beautiful design. It is located in the northern part of the medina, on a small side street. From there, you’re not far from the Jardin Majorelle, the Dar El Bacha Museum, or even Le Jardin Secret. The riad is perfectly located if you want to have a few highlights within walking distance.

Our room was air-conditioned, tastefully decorated, and very clean. Overall, the entire riad is very thoughtfully designed: minimalist yet cozy. There’s a small courtyard with a mini-pool, a cool communal lounge, and a rooftop terrace for relaxing (although without a view of the city).

Breakfast was freshly prepared and classic Moroccan (bread, pancakes, jam, fruit, tea). The team was warm, helpful, and always approachable.

Riad Instant T – Our Conclusion

Riad Instant T is ideal if you want to experience Marrakech in a modern, stylish, and peaceful way. It’s perfectly located for exploring the highlights in the northern part of the medina (Jardin Majorelle or Le Jardin Secret). For us, it was a truly beautiful retreat in the middle of the city.

There’s a mosque nearby, and you can hear the muezzin quite clearly, especially late at night and early in the morning. It didn’t bother us, but it’s worth knowing. We therefore generally recommend packing earplugs, as they can be worth their weight in gold in many places in Marrakech.

  • Location: in the northern part of the Medina
  • Price: €121 per night including breakfast (May)
  • Style: modern, boho, minimalist
  • Suitable for: couples, friends, solo travelers, small families

Marrakech – Other Beautiful Riads

In addition to the riads we stayed in, we had a few more on our shortlist. Some of them were unfortunately fully booked or simply too expensive during our travel period – but they are still beautiful and recommendable. Here are six great addresses:

  • Riad Dar Alhambra*
  • Riad Ksar Fawz & Spa*
  • Riad Magda & Spa*
  • BÔ Riad Boutique Hotel & Spa*
  • Riad Kaiss By Anika*

Fez – Riad Dar Skalli

We spent our first night in Fes at the Riad Dar Skalli*. It’s a traditional riad with plenty of space and a great roof terrace. It’s located in the quiet Batha district, a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the narrow streets, but only a few minutes’ walk to the medina.

Our room was large, comfortable, and decorated in a classic (almost historic) style with colorful tiles, high ceilings, and wooden doors. The courtyard is open and has tables, chairs, and seating areas. Everything has a typically Moroccan and very relaxed feel.

We also really liked the rooftop terrace with its view over parts of the city. It’s a particularly beautiful spot at sunset with a glass of tea! The breakfast was generous with a wide selection of Moroccan dishes. The staff was always very warm and helpful.

Riad Dar Skalli – Our Verdict

Beautiful, authentic riad with plenty of space and a good view from the rooftop terrace. If you have a room in the courtyard, you have to expect noise from other guests sitting in the courtyard, chatting or eating. But we were quiet around 10 p.m.

  • Location: Quietly located on the edge of the Medina (just a 5-minute walk and you’re right in the middle of it)
  • Price: €107 per night including breakfast (May)

Fez – Hotel & Spa Dar Bensouda

The Hotel & Spa Dar Bensouda* was our second riad in Fes and significantly more upscale. It is located in the heart of the medina and feels like a small oasis among all the narrow streets.

The rooms are beautifully furnished with stucco ceilings, colorful tiles, high-quality fabrics, and great attention to detail. There’s a courtyard with a pool, a small spa, and up on the roof terrace you can relax with a view over the old town.

The breakfast was excellent and beautifully presented. The staff was friendly, professional, and always approachable. It’s definitely a place where you’ll want to stay a little longer.

Hotel & Spa Dar Bensouda – Our Verdict

A fantastic riad with excellent service, a fantastic roof terrace, and a sumptuous breakfast. We really liked our room, which was also very comfortably furnished and decorated. We stayed in this riad for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time.

As with many riads, you should be aware: The architecture is often quite open, meaning you can sometimes hear noises from the courtyard or other guests. This didn’t bother us, but if you have sensitive sleep, keep this in mind (earplugs are KING here).

  • Location: Centrally located in the Medina, yet quiet
  • Price: €143 per night including breakfast (May)
  • Style: Elegant, traditional, high-quality

Fez – other beautiful riads

We also had many beautiful accommodations on our shortlist for Fez. But here too, some of them were already fully booked during our travel period or were simply beyond our budget. We’ve provided links to a few riads below that we would definitely have booked:

  • Riad Bahja Fez*
  • Riad Palais Bahia Fes*
  • Ryad Salama Fés*
  • Riad Fes Baraka*
  • Riad Semlalia*

Chefchaouen – Riad Lella Chama

In Chefchaouen, we stayed at the Riad Lella Chama* and were immediately impressed by its prime location. The riad is super centrally located, just a few steps from the blue alleys and Place El Haouta, but still quiet enough.

The house once belonged to the hosts’ great-grandparents and has been restored with great attention to detail. You can feel it: everything is clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. Our room was comfortably furnished, air-conditioned, and beautifully decorated.

The hosts were incredibly warm, helpful, and always there for us. We immediately felt welcome. Breakfast was served in the small indoor area (simple, but fresh and delicious).

Riad Lella Chama – Our Verdict

The location is top-notch, the riad has been lovingly decorated, and the team there is super friendly. For us, a really nice place to arrive and feel at home in Chefchaouen.

Rabat – Riad Amaris

Our journey then took us to the country’s capital, Rabat. We spent one night here in the beautiful Riad Amaris* – a truly stylishly restored riad in the heart of the medina. The location is ideal for exploring the old town.

The riad impresses with a bright courtyard, a glass roof, and superbly tasteful decor that combines traditional Moroccan elements with modern comforts. Our room was bright, spacious, and very clean. What was particularly nice was that it was split over two levels: downstairs, a cozy seating area with a couch, a bathroom with a shower, and upstairs, a comfortable double bed.

The entire riad is bright and welcoming, with an open courtyard, plenty of light, and lovingly decorated. Breakfast, served on the rooftop terrace, was fresh, varied, and a wonderful start to the day with a view over the rooftops of Rabat. The staff was also super friendly and helpful.

Riad Amaris – Our Verdict

Stylish, modern, and superbly located – we felt truly at home here. If you want to experience Rabat in an authentic and relaxed way, Riad Amaris is a great choice. For us, this accommodation is certainly one of the best of our trip.

Ait Ben Haddou – Maison d’hôtes Tigminou

After crossing the Atlas Mountains, we stopped in Ait Ben Haddou. We stayed overnight at the beautiful Maison d’hôtes Tigminou*, which is only about 10 minutes from Ait Ben Haddou. Tigminou means “my home” in Berber – and that’s exactly what it feels like.

The accommodation consists of seven ground-floor rooms/chalets, nestled in a large garden with palm and olive trees. The rooms are spacious, air-conditioned, and lovingly furnished in a traditional style, using materials such as tadelakt, wood, and wrought iron. The large pool with sun loungers is also very beautiful.

The warm hospitality of Johanna and Fabrice deserves special mention. They are always on hand to offer tips and ensure that you feel completely at home. Breakfast is served outdoors, and in the evening, a delicious dinner with Moroccan specialties is available upon request.

Maison d’hôtes Tigminou – Our Conclusion

The location is ideal: quiet and secluded, yet only about a 10-minute drive from the famous mud-brick city of Aït Ben Haddou. You can get great travel tips, delicious food and

Tinghir – Riad Dar Bab Todra

In Tinghir, we stayed at the Riad Dar Bab Todra*. This quiet accommodation is located on the outskirts of the town, overlooking the beautiful palm groves. The Todra Gorge is just a short drive away, and you can reach the center of Tinghir in just a few minutes.

The riad is cozy, not too big, and has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Our room was spacious, clean, and air-conditioned. We particularly liked the pool in the courtyard, which was perfect for us to end the day.

Breakfast was served as a small buffet. In the evening, you can eat in the riad if you wish – there was tagine, soup, and salads – all homemade and delicious. The hosts were super friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Convenient: There’s free parking right outside.

Merzouga – Kanz Erremal

If you want to spend the night right on the edge of the Sahara, the Kanz Erremal* in Merzouga is a good choice. The location is truly special: You step out of the hotel and find yourself standing directly in the sand of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

The hotel itself is built in the style of a traditional kasbah, with mud walls, palm trees, and a pool overlooking the dunes. The rooms are simple but clean and air-conditioned. Some even have a balcony with a desert view (like ours).

Breakfast is solid, but nothing special. There’s cake, bread, jam, and tea. In the evening, you can eat in the on-site restaurant; the menu offers classic dishes like tagine and couscous. You can, of course, also book all activities on-site.

Kanz Erremal – Our Conclusion

We’ll be honest: Some areas of the hotel could use some renovation, and the service is inconsistent. But for the price and location, the overall package is good. The pool is absolutely fantastic, and the location is even better. It only takes a few steps and you’re in the middle of the desert.

During our first trip through Morocco, we spent a night at the beautiful Kasbah Azul*. This lovely accommodation is located just outside of Agdz, in the middle of a small oasis with palm trees, a garden, and a pool.

Our room was stylishly furnished in traditional Moroccan style, with its own terrace and a view of the greenery. Everything was superbly maintained, air-conditioned, and truly comfortable. What we particularly liked: the hosts! They were warm, attentive, and always very friendly.

In the morning, there was a rich breakfast with fresh, homemade products. And if you wish, you can eat there in the evening – a creative menu is served, often with ingredients from the hotel’s own garden or local farmers. The cuisine is Moroccan, but with a modern twist.

The pool is perfect for relaxing after a hot day in the Draâ Valley. If you like, you can also use the small hammam. The entire concept is sustainable, and the accommodation has even been awarded the “Green Key” label, placing great emphasis on environmental awareness.

Taghazout – Hyatt Regency Taghazout

At the end of our intensive tour of Morocco, we wanted to relax a bit. The Hyatt Regency Taghazout* was exactly the right choice. The chic five-star resort is quietly located directly on the coast, overlooking the sea, far from the hustle and bustle of Agadir or the center of Taghazout.

Our room had a balcony with a partial sea view, was stylishly furnished, and pleasantly spacious. The pool area is a real highlight, especially in the evening at sunset. We were also impressed by the breakfast. The selection was extensive, everything fresh, and a welcome change from the typical Moroccan breakfast.

What we particularly liked: From the hotel, you can walk directly along the beach promenade to Taghazout. The walk takes about 20 minutes and leads directly along the water. The location is wonderfully quiet, but still close enough if you feel like visiting the surfer village.

3. The most important information and tips

1. Should you book in advance?

In short: Yes, usually. Especially if you have specific riads, boutique hotels, or well-reviewed desert camps in mind. In cities like Marrakech, Fez, or Chefchaouen, many of the beautiful riads book up quickly—especially during peak season (spring and fall).

Even smaller towns with few good accommodations (e.g., Aït Ben Haddou or Agdz) are better off planning ahead. Spontaneous trips are possible, but you’ll have to be more flexible and may have to compromise on style, location, or price. Things are a bit more relaxed in the off-season—you can sometimes decide on the spot.

2. Read reviews carefully (don’t just count the stars)

Pay special attention to comments on location, cleanliness, and soundproofing—this is often more important for riads than a general 9.2 rating. We always pay attention to keywords like noise, quiet, loud, etc. in reviews.

3. Tourist Tax

Many accommodations in Morocco charge a local tourist tax (“taxe de séjour”) – usually between €1 and €4 per person per night. This tax is often not included in the booking price on platforms like Booking or Airbnb.

Instead, it is required separately in cash upon check-in or check-out. This applies to hotels, riads, guesthouses, and even desert camps. We usually had to pay €2.50 per night per person.

4. Location in the Medina? Luggage?

Many riads in Morocco are located in small alleys without street names in the middle of the medina. By car, you often can’t get directly to the door and have to walk the last few meters. Therefore, you should definitely clarify the best way to get there in advance. Ask about a suitable parking space, the best meeting point, or good directions.

Many riads include a luggage service: An employee picks you up at an agreed location (e.g., at the city gate or a café) and carries your luggage in a handcart through the narrow alleys to your accommodation. This is particularly helpful in Marrakech or Fez.

5. Public Parking

At almost every public parking lot, there is an unofficial “guard” who will look after your car for a few dirhams (approx. 10–30 MAD per night). Don’t be put off; this is completely normal in Morocco.

Unfortunately, the parking attendants always want significantly more than usual. Negotiate with them or move on. Anything over 30 dirhams per night is completely excessive!

5. Pack earplugs!

No matter how quiet an accommodation is described, you often hear more in riads than you’d like. Other guests, the muezzin, scooters, cats, or street noise. You can always hear something. A small pair of earplugs can really save your sleep. Trust us. Bolle wore them almost every night.

7. Desert Camps in Merzouga

You can easily book the hotels on the edge of the dunes via Booking.com*. Many of these hotels also have tented camps in the middle of the desert. This way, you can combine both! Generally, you can now also easily book tented camps via Booking.com*.

8. Ask about heating in winter

Temperature differences in Morocco can be extreme. Not all riads are well-equipped for this, so it’s worth checking beforehand. Air conditioning is highly recommended in midsummer, but heating is recommended in winter.

9. Breakfast is usually included

But as already mentioned, breakfast is usually rather sweet and simple. Typically Moroccan means: bread, pancakes, jam, sometimes eggs, fresh orange juice, tea, and coffee. No buffet, and cheese or sausage is rare. If you need a hearty breakfast, you’ll often be disappointed in Morocco.

10. Ask about dinner – many riads cook on request.

Smaller riads often don’t have an à la carte restaurant, but a traditional menu (e.g., tagine or couscous) will be cooked upon request. It’s often delicious, homemade, and served in a relaxed atmosphere on the rooftop terrace. The prices are, of course, usually significantly higher than those you’d find in a simple street restaurant.

11. Is vegetarian food available?

Moroccan cuisine is quite meat-heavy, but don’t worry. Almost all hosts are happy to offer a vegetarian option if you ask in advance. The selection is often somewhat limited, but you can find vegetable tagine and couscous with vegetables almost everywhere, and they taste really good. Be sure to try them!

12. Power adapter for Morocco

In Morocco, the same sockets are used as in Germany (Type C & E). So you can simply plug in all your devices – no adapter necessary. If you want to charge multiple devices at the same time, it’s best to take a small power strip with 3-4 sockets and a USB hub with you. This will ensure you’re well-equipped.

4. Hotels and Riads in Morocco – FAQ

Yes, we had Wi-Fi in every accommodation, and it was usually very good. In addition, we both had an e-SIM from Airalo* with unlimited data usage (10 days for €35).

You can expect prices between €30 and €150 per night. Simple riads start at around €40, while beautiful boutique accommodations or desert camps start at €70. But the value for money is often really good!

Yes, riads are generally safe. Especially in the Medina, there are often several locked doors leading to the room. Nevertheless, as is the case everywhere, don’t leave valuables lying around. We had a safe in many rooms. We also always carry our PackSafe* with us.

It depends on what you’re looking for. Riad = personal, traditional, often in the heart of the old town. Hotel = more modern, sometimes more comfortable, but often more anonymous. For that true Moroccan feeling, we clearly recommend a riad!

We stayed almost exclusively in riads and kasbahs and always had room service. We usually don’t need this service and let them know when we need it.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It varied greatly for us. In some accommodations, we had to pay in cash on site; for others, we could pay online in advance via Booking.com* or directly on site with a credit card.

Yes, especially for the city tax. This must always be paid in cash on site (usually €2.50 per night and per person). However, not every accommodation charges this fee. Occasionally, you may also have to pay the total amount for your stay in cash on site.

It depends. Many riads are geared more towards couples or adults – because of the quiet atmosphere, the narrow stairs, and the lack of space to play. Some don’t allow children under 12 at all.

However, there are certainly riads that are family-friendly and offer larger rooms, a courtyard for playing, and are understanding of children’s noise. It’s best to ask beforehand or specifically search for a “family-friendly riad.”

Not really. Most riads are located in old, traditional buildings and often have narrow, steep stairs, small doors, and no elevator. Accessibility is rare, especially in the medina.

Tip: Hotels or modern guesthouses outside the medina are often more suitable if accessibility is important.

5. Accommodation in Morocco – Our Conclusion

In Morocco, you’ll find a huge selection of accommodations. From charming riads in the medina to modern beach hotels and cozy desert lodges, you’ll find it all. Prices are often significantly lower than in Europe, especially outside the major cities.

Our tip: Read the reviews carefully, especially regarding location, cleanliness, and thin walls. Many riads are beautiful, but often very thin walls. And don’t be surprised if you have to pay in cash. That’s perfectly normal in Morocco.

If you’re looking for a beautiful riad with a roof terrace, a good breakfast, and a central location, you’ll find great options in almost every city. It’s best to book in advance, especially in popular locations like Marrakech or Fez. And it’s best to ask in advance for a good meeting point if you’re arriving with luggage. Many riads are located in small alleys without direct access.
