Unexpected Hilton Suite Upgrade Experience

Ever walk into a hotel room and find yourself in actual, out-loud laughter? Well, buckle up because my last hotel escapade offered up precisely that brand of unexpected surprise.

“Thanks for being a Diamond, we’ve upgraded you to a suite”

Picture this: I’m on my grand Aer Lingus & Iberia A321XLR adventure, and I find myself spending a night in Dublin. I choose the Hilton Dublin Airport for my stay. The check-in staff, smiling ear-to-ear, chirpily say, “Thanks for being a Diamond, we’ve upgraded you to a suite.” Not one to refuse a tantalizing upgrade, I respond with the usual gratitude, “That’s very kind, thank you so much.”

Now, imagine my surprise when I step into the suite, and instantly, the chuckles begin. Behold the “living room” — but can we really call it that?

A Bizarre Living Arrangement

What greeted me was something that could only be described as quirky. See, it’s clearly a family suite aimed at multiplying guest space. But here’s the kicker:

  • You’d typically expect a living area to have, well, couches, right? Yet this space had morphed into a bed zone. Sure, they upgraded me for free, but resetting it to something livable would have been nice.
  • Is it normal to find two side-by-side couches that transform into beds? I’ve traveled extensively, and no, I’ve never seen this.

Small Oddities Everywhere

The eccentricities didn’t stop at the living room. Take the balconies, for instance: they were bolted shut like a fortress against bird invasions with ominous “spikes” lining the railings. My open-window dreams were shattered, pretty much turning the room into a luxurious jail cell.

Odd Bathroom and More

The washroom continued the peculiar streak. The shower setup deserves a special mention for being notably unremarkable, shall we say? A bit underwhelming, rather like if a kid tried to build a shower cubicle with their first LEGO set.

But wait, y’all told me not to stay at this hotel?!

So, the story behind picking this place was straightforward. I needed a stopover spot, so I booked the Hilton Dublin Airport. However, after spilling the beans about my plans, many friendly folks implored me to rethink and rebook, branding this place as outdated, to put it lightly. It’s not easy feeling like the last runner in a no-turn-back race. The alternatives were hardly appealing — a fully-booked Hyatt and 800 EUR a night at the Marriotts. Yikes!

Confronted with these choices and an absurdly early departure time of 3:30 AM, I stuck with Hilton. Sometimes reviewing a dud can be enlightening, right? Although the establishment wears its age like a proud badge, the team tried their best, and you can’t fault their friendliness.

Bottom line

The suite upgrade at Hilton Dublin Airport, granted on account of my sparkling Hilton Honors Diamond status, was a pleasant surprise in theory. Hilton isn’t exactly known for consistent suite upgrades, after all. But, the room’s setup was, shall we say, artistically unique. I mean, unexpected extra beds catering to my party-of-one needs? The moment I opened that door was the stuff of comedic legends.
