1. Summer vacation on the island of Hiddensee
Let’s start with our absolute number 1: The island of Hiddensee. For us, this car-free island is one of the most beautiful places in all of Germany. We were there last summer and could hardly believe our eyes: turquoise water, fine, light sandy beaches, charming thatched-roof houses, and an incredibly relaxed vibe. As soon as we set foot on the island, we knew we definitely wanted to come back next summer.
We rented bikes at the harbor and explored the beautiful island in the best summer weather. First, we headed south to the Gallen lighthouse and the beautiful beach. Afterwards, we strolled through the main towns of Neuendorf, Vitte, and Kloster, visited the magical fish soup, feasted on delicious ice cream, and enjoyed the view of the island from the Inselblick viewpoint and the Dornbusch lighthouse. 2. Fischland-Darß-Zingst Peninsula
The Fischland-Darß-Zingst Peninsula is also ideal for a relaxing summer holiday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. We particularly like the peninsula’s diversity, with its magical and dreamy towns, the Vorpommern Boddenlandschaft National Park, its pristine beaches, and diverse landscapes. In the national park alone, you can expect moors, dunes, pastures, forests, and beaches. In addition to the sea side, there is also the Bodden side with its small maritime villages.
Be sure to visit the artists’ village of Ahrenshoop and let yourself be captivated by its unique charm. Rent a rowboat in Wustrow and explore the Bodden on your own, or stroll through the town of Born am Darß and treat yourself to a delicious coffee at Peterssons Hof Café. If you’re looking for something more active, you should take a hike on the circular trail in the national park or walk along the cliffs between Wustrow and Ahrenshoop. 3. Mecklenburg Lake District by Houseboat
Would you rather spend your summer vacation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the Mecklenburg Lake District? That’s a great decision, because there’s enough space for everyone on the 1,117 lakes, in the Müritz National Park, and in the seven other nature parks. Whether on the water or on land, the leisure and sports opportunities here are endless. A full 85% of the lakes are connected by canals and rivers. So, exploring the various lakes in a houseboat is a great idea, right? Of course, you can also book accommodation (including camping) on the mainland and explore the many beautiful spots by car, bike, or on foot.
We particularly like the small island town of Malchow, the town of Waren on the Müritz, the Seehotel Schloss Klink, the castle gardens in Neustrelitz, the Serrahn Beech Forest, the Müritz National Park, the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park, and the Feldberg Lake District. You could probably spend a whole year vacationing here and still not have seen and explored everything. You can find out more about our adventure here: With a houseboat on the Mecklenburg Lake District.
4. Hanseatic City of Wismar & Poel Island
Want a mix of city, beach, and relaxation? How about a summer vacation on the island of Poel, including a trip to the wonderful city of Wismar? The small island is just 37 km² in size, yet has a lot to offer. A good starting point for your exploration is the community of Kirchdorf, with its idyllic harbor, the brick island church, and the island museum. Rent a bike (if you don’t have one with you) and explore the small island on two wheels (Wismarsche Straße 7 and 13). More information here: All about the island of Poel.
Visit the beautiful historic city of Wismar, which is only about 10 km from the island. Wismar is brimming with sights and offers the perfect mix for a diverse city trip. This maritime Hanseatic city awaits you with a fantastic maritime harbor, beautiful house facades, historic buildings, cool shops, and cafés. If you take enough time, you can discover so much more besides the “standard sights.”
5. Imperial Spas on the Island of Usedom
Most tourists spend their summer holidays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the Island of Usedom or on the sunny Island of Rügen. Why? Because there are simply countless beaches and Baltic Sea resorts here, which are almost perfect for a summer holiday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Accordingly, there’s always a lot going on here in the summer (as is the case everywhere else in the state). We personally think the island of Rügen is really cool, but we prefer the island of Usedom. The Imperial Spas and Amber Spas await you with beautiful sandy beaches, promenades for strolling and strolling, good restaurants and cafés, and leisure activities.
Our recent trips took us to Zinnowitz and Bansin, among others. Both Baltic Sea resorts are highly recommended. Of course, the Imperial Spas of Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf are also worth a visit, as are the towns of Ückeritz, Loddin, Koserow, and Zempin. In the north of the island, you’ll also find the town of Peenemünde, which boasts a museum well worth seeing. We also highly recommend a trip to Mellenthin Castle and a detour to the castle island of Wolgast. More about this here: The top sights on the island of Usedom.
