Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis at a glance

The Tyrolean holiday region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis consists of the three historic mountain villages of Serfaus, Fiss, and Ladis, which are located above the upper Tyrolean Inn Valley at an altitude of 1,192 to 1,436 meters. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is particularly popular with families with children, as there are countless fantastic playgrounds, diverse adventure mountains, and exciting adventure worlds that are sure to make every child’s heart beat faster.

While the region transforms into a romantic, glittering winter landscape with 214 kilometers of slopes in winter, hiking and biking enthusiasts in particular get their money’s worth in summer. Over 500 kilometers of hiking trails, numerous opportunities to stop for a break, 11 cable cars and lifts, as well as countless kilometers of trails and cycle paths await you.

Serfaus: The mountain village of Serfaus is the largest (and most touristy) village with around 1,165 residents and over 7,000 guest beds. In addition to a driverless subway (yes, you heard right), you’ll find numerous hotels, guesthouses, shops, and restaurants in Serfaus. The town center is also traffic-calmed, making strolling through the village very pleasant.

Fiss: In our opinion, Fiss is the perfect starting point for all kinds of adventures in the surrounding mountains. The tranquil village with around 1,000 residents boasts a 600-year-old town center, winding alleys, and plenty of charm. We felt right at home in Fiss!

Ladis: Ladis is the smallest of the trio of villages, with just under 540 inhabitants. We particularly liked the centuries-old farmhouses, the beautiful landscape, the well-preserved village center, and the idyllic lake below Laudeck Castle.

Wellness & Culinary Delights

The hotel’s highlight for us was definitely the beautiful and spacious wellness area with an indoor pool, sauna world, rock grotto with ice fountain, sun terrace, relaxation room with daybeds and waterbeds, and a family sauna. Here, we could unwind and relax our tired muscles after our mountain adventures. We particularly liked the many stylish details, the lighting concept, and the cozy ambience.

The hotel also impressed with its culinary offerings. In the morning, we enjoyed a vital and healthy breakfast buffet with regional products and homemade breakfast specialties. In the afternoon, numerous delicious cakes, a variety of snacks, and hearty bites awaited us, and in the evening, an exquisite 5-course gourmet menu awaited us. Sometimes there were Austrian classics, sometimes international delicacies, and on other days, vegetarian dishes as well as a weekly special menu. Recommendation 1: Culinary Hike

Want a leisurely hike with frequent stops along the way? Of course, we couldn’t miss that! During our time in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, we went on a culinary hike and sampled a variety of regional specialties. A four-course surprise menu awaited us in three of the six mountain restaurants. We were able to customize the hiking route and the refreshment stops; you can find all the information here: Culinary Hike.

After a light breakfast at the hotel, we took the Möseralmbahn cable car in Fiss up to the Möseralm restaurant, where we were greeted with an aperitif and a starter. Among other things, we enjoyed chanterelle mushroom tartare on beetroot carpaccio, as well as a variety of spreads and fresh bread. Afterwards, we continued our leisurely hike to the middle station of the Schönjochbahn cable car in Fiss (approx. 30 minutes) and from there took the gondola up to the BergDiamant panoramic restaurant at an altitude of almost 2,500 meters. Wow! The view from up there was truly spectacular!

We were warmly welcomed in the panoramic restaurant and taken to a table already set. Here, we were served Alpine shrimp bisque with nettle tortellini, followed by a medallion of grey cattle with wild garlic dumplings, yellow beets, and rosemary polenta. After this delicious main course, we hiked at lofty heights along the Quellenweg (spring path) for about three hours to the picturesque Högsee.

Dessert, an incredibly delicious chocolate soufflé with sorbet, was already waiting for us at the Seealm Hög. Our culinary hike ended there, and after a digestive walk around the Högsee, we took the Alpkopfbahn cable car back to Serfaus shortly before closing time. Many thanks to the individual mountain restaurants for the many enjoyable moments! Reserve your culinary hike.

Recommendation 2: From the Fisser Joch via the Urgtal to Schöngampalm

Our hike started with a leisurely ride from the valley station of the Schönjochbahn Fiss to the mountain station at an altitude of 2,436 meters. Once there, we strolled past the BergDiamant panoramic restaurant and hiked along the “Golden Man Trail” to the Crystal Cube, the Z1 viewing platform, and the Almbahn Fiss mountain station at an altitude of 2,596 meters. We followed the path along the ridge, turned right just before the Oberer Sattelkopf onto the Spinnenseensteig and hiked for a long time through rocky terrain.

After about 1.5 hours, we reached We enter the Urgtal Valley, the most exciting part of the hike. Hidden here in the northeastern foothills of the Samnaun Range is one of the most beautiful high mountain valleys in the Tyrolean Oberland, with numerous streams, lakes, wetlands, spring moors, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. After leaving the stone fields behind us, we hiked along the Urgtalweg along the stream and through the lush landscape.

Urgtal-Spinnenseensteig Urgtal Urgtal-Spinnenseensteig_2

We had to stop several times along the way because the path was blocked by numerous grazing Highland cattle. Since they showed no interest in us, they usually moved on after a few minutes and cleared the path for us again. The cattle, with their impressive horns, appear quite intimidating, but there’s no real reason to be afraid of them. Nevertheless, you should definitely keep a sufficient distance from the animals and not disturb them under any circumstances.

Marmots and Highland Cattle in the Urg Valley

The last 4 kilometers led us past unspoiled, babbling streams, green forests, and the small Urgsee lake. Here, too, we stopped when we spotted a marmot a few meters ahead of us. They live primarily above the tree line on mountain pastures, alpine meadows, and rocky grasslands. They prefer soils with sufficient soil, where they can build their dens, up to seven meters deep and extensively branched, with numerous tunnels and chambers. If marmots sense danger, they warn each other with loud whistles, which we have often heard in the Alps.

The marmot disappeared relatively quickly back into its burrow and we continued hiking to the Schöngampalm, where our tour ended exactly 4 hours ended. Of course, we first ordered Kaiserschmarrn and a Spezi, as befits a proper stop.

From the Schöngampalm, we then cycled back to Fiss on our pre-reserved mountain bikes. We had to hurry because it suddenly started pouring with rain. After only 30 minutes, we reached the Sport Schmid sports shop in Fiss, where we could return the bikes and helmets.

Great Excursion Destinations

In the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region, you don’t necessarily have to embark on several hours of hikes and bike tours; there’s so much to discover in the immediate vicinity. We’ve put together a few great excursion destinations for you that are ideal for families, couples, and even solo travelers. All spots are also quickly accessible by gondola or on foot. Generally, you don’t necessarily need a car on site, as the three villages are well connected by various gondolas and hiking buses.

1. Walk to Lake Wolfsee

From Fiss, we walked in just 10 minutes to the idyllically situated Lake Wolfsee, which is located on a sunny, panoramic plateau. The reservoir not only boasts a fantastic mountain panorama but also plenty of play areas for children.

In a playful way, kids can learn all about lynxes, wolves, and bears, which inhabited the Alps for a long time. There are numerous places to sit and lie down on the shore of the lake, where you can relax and enjoy the view over the lake.

2. Exploring Ladis

From Lake Wolfsee, it was only another 30-minute walk before we reached the small mountain village of Ladis. Even from a distance, we could see Laudeck Castle, perched on a mighty rock overlooking the village. You can visit it weekly as part of a guided tour during the summer months (registration at the information office by 5 p.m. the day before).

During a walk through the village, we also discovered centuries-old farmhouses with beautiful frescoes and open staircases. Our tip: Take a leisurely stroll around the small lake and then relax in Gerti’s Seecafé. We recommend the warm waffles with vanilla ice cream. And by the way: You can also take the Sonnenbahn cable car, which connects Fiss with Ladis.

3. Long Night in Serfaus

Serfaus is the largest mountain village in the holiday region and just 5 minutes by hiking bus from Fiss (approx. 30 minutes on foot). The traffic-calmed village awaited us with numerous hotels and guesthouses, as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. Incidentally, the “Long Night” takes place regularly during the summer months, where you can not only shop until 10 p.m. and enjoy live music in the streets, but also meet street musicians, jugglers, and magicians. A fantastic experience for all ages! You can find more information here: Long Night in Serfaus.

Serfaus has always been popular with holidaymakers, and in order to stop the enormous traffic, the smallest and highest underground railway in the world, suspended on air cushions, was opened in 1985. This driverless subway has been transporting locals and holidaymakers across the village for 1.28 kilometers ever since. The subway connects the valley station of the cable cars in the west with the parking lot in the east and is free to use. From the parking lot, you can then take one of the buses to Fiss or Ladis.

4. Summer Fun Park Fiss

Looking for some adrenaline and action? Then we recommend the Summer Fun Park Fiss, which you can easily reach with the Möseralmbahn from the Fiss valley station. At 1,812 meters above sea level, there are plenty of thrills for all ages. Whether it’s a water playground, an XXL trampoline, a 13-meter-high diving tower with a giant air cushion, a petting zoo, a fast-paced Alpine Coaster, or a giant swing with a somersault – there’s something for everyone here. At the mountain station there is also the Mountain Restaurant Möseralm, where you can indulge in culinary delights.

We have, among other things, the “Fisser We tried out the “Flieger” and flew through the air at 80 km/h at a height of 47 meters. Definitely not for those with a fear of heights! We then returned to the valley station on the “Fisser Flitzer” at speeds of up to 45 km/h. The route is 2.2 kilometers long and led us through caves and tunnels. Directly behind the Skyswing, the Panorama-Genussweg (Pleasure Trail) leads to the “Serfauser Sauser” in just 15 minutes. This zipline is 2,000 meters long and took us through the Tyrolean mountains to Serfaus in four exhilarating stages. Highly recommended!
