The castle was built by Emperor Diocletian, the construction occupied an area of more than 3 hectares. Construction work was completed in 305 AD. Gradually, the population of the city of Salona moved closer to the palace, and Split grew and strengthened around it. The main premises were transformed – the emperor’s mausoleum became a temple, the basements were converted into warehouses.

Maryan Park
The park is shrouded in legends, according to one of them the emperor ordered to create a recreation area on the mountain for city residents. At that time, there were more than 10,000 of them.
For some time, the president of Yugoslavia liked to rest in the park and even set up a residence here. In the middle of the last century, this landmark in the city of Split in Central Dalmatia was ennobled – a large number of trees, mainly Mediterranean pine, were planted in the park. Today it is a favorite place of recreation of the townspeople.

Gallery of Ivan Meshtrovych
Once in the city of Split, Ivan Meštrović, a famous sculptor, founded a gallery, which is located in a picturesque palace, in the southern part of Mount Marjan.
The villa, which eventually became a gallery, was built between 1931 and 1939. The project of the house was prepared by its owner – Ivan Meshtrovich himself.
The boy’s creative abilities were revealed in childhood, when he lived in the small village of Otavitsa and was inspired by numerous legends, myths and fairy tales of those places. Then the boy was trained by a local stone carver and entered the Art Academy .
The master’s popularity was brought by his first exhibition “Vienna Secession” , after the success Meshtrovych moved to France. Every historical milestone in the sculptor’s life was reflected in his works.
Meštrovych returned to Croatia many years later, he bequeathed his works, as well as the estate and garden to the country. The gallery opened in 1952, here you can see sculptures, statues, wood carvings, paintings, furniture collections. The collection also features personal photos of the master. Temporary exhibitions are held periodically in the gallery.
Split church bell tower of St. Domn
The cathedral is the main temple in the city where Catholics come to pray. It is a complex consisting of a church built on the site of a mausoleum and a tall bell tower. The temple is named after the patron saint of the city. Saint Domn served as a bishop in the ancient city of Salona. He and his family were tortured and killed by order of the emperor.
The main part of the temple was built in the 3rd century, it was an imperial mausoleum. In the 13th century, a hexagonal pulpit on columns, decorated with carvings, was completed in the church, in the 15th century, the interior was supplemented with an altar, and in the 18th century, choirs were completed.
The temple is decorated with wooden doors made by the master from Croatia, Andrii Buvine. Scenes from the life of God are depicted on the doors. On the first floor there is a treasury, where the relics of the patron saint of Split and paintings, icons and other works of art are stored.
Quay
The main embankment of Split is called Riva , its length is 250 meters. A cozy place with palm trees and benches. The street was reconstructed in 2007. From a distance, the impression is created as if the fortress merges with the rock. It is partly so, there are no straight lines in the building, each building is harmoniously inscribed in the landscape and, as it were, merges with it.
Visually, the fortress consists of two parts. The lower one is located in the western part, it is bounded by Mount Greben. Upper – higher, located in the east, here is the Oprah tower .
Fruit square
Among the attractions of the city of Split, Fruit Square stands out for its elegance and comfort. It used to be the center of a large market. Fruits were sold here, hence the name of the square. Monument to Bishop Hrgur of Nin
The statue looks massive and visually resembles an ancient Greek titan. This work of art perpetuates the memory of the priest who was able to do the impossible. He obtained permission to preach in his native Croatian language.

The recreation area forms a small bay, which is located to the west of Bachvice beach. If you are planning a trip by personal transport, please note that entering the park by car is prohibited. The road from the center of Split takes a quarter of an hour. You can get to Kashuna by water – a boat trip takes about half an hour. The cost of the boat ride will be 40 kunas. Water transport departs from the city port every hour.

An excellent beach surrounded by pine trees is located at the foot of the hill in Maryan Park. Distinctive features:

Beaches in Split County

Makarska is well known far beyond the borders of Croatia, it has long gained popularity among tourists coming to this country. Most of the beaches of the Makarska Riviera have been awarded the “Blue Flag” international award.
The Makarska Riviera in Central Dalmatia has a total length of 70 km. In addition to the beaches of Makarsk itself, the Riviera includes the beaches of other resorts – the closest ones are Brela, Tučepi, Baška Voda. You can walk from Makarsk to the beaches of these resorts, or you can take a bus – they travel often.
If we talk about the main beaches of the Riviera in Central Dalmatia , you can’t count on a quiet rest there: constant traffic, 24/7 loud music, a large number of people. Life here is literally “boiling”, and in August on the Makarska Riviera it is impossible to find a place where there are no people – vacationers have to lie almost next to each other. In order to have time to take a place, you need to come to the beach as early as possible, although some, in order not to search in the morning, leave a towel overnight.
Beaches of Makarska
Cape St. Peter divides the narrow coast within the city of Makarska into 2 bays. The eastern one, located between Capes St. Peter and Oseyava, was successfully used for the construction of a port and yacht moorings.
Western bay
In the western bay there is a resort recreation area with numerous beaches. Beaches in Makarska in Central Dalmatia are no more than 4-6 m wide, almost all of them are covered with small pebbles. All beaches located in urban and suburban areas are equipped with toilets, showers, and changing rooms. Sunbeds and umbrellas are paid.

Quay
The Marineta embankment runs along all the beaches of Makarska in Central Dalmatia . This promenade, which has many restaurants, clubs, and shops, is a favorite vacation spot for tourists. There is a variety of entertainment for children, and the largest playground with attractions is located next to the central beach. Beaches of Brela
In the small resort town of Brela, which belongs to the Riviera, there are many picturesque and clean beaches. Pine trees grow around, the air has a wonderful coniferous aroma, there is a place to hide from the sun. The water is ideal for swimming with a mask. The coastline is narrow, the shore is pebbly and mostly stony, and you need to go down to the beaches by long stairs.
Punta Rata is the main beach of Brela, awarded with the “Blue Flag”. It is small pebbled, with a huge number of pine trees that come almost to the water itself – the view is so picturesque that it is used for advertising photos of the Makarska Riviera in Central Dalmatia . Punta Rata is considered the most beautiful in Croatia and in Europe, and in 2004 Forbes magazine awarded it a high 6th place in the list of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. On Punta Rata there is a famous stone, recognized as the official symbol of Brel. Those who came to rest by car can leave it in the parking lot for 80 kuna per day.
Punta Rata beach, however, this also applies to the other beaches of Brela, is very comfortably organized. A 10-12 km embankment has been arranged, where comfortable benches are installed in the shade, cafes, bars, and pizzerias are open. There are not many shops, and those are concentrated mainly in the Punta Rata area.
Entrance to the beach in Brela is free, but you have to pay to use the shower. You can rent a sunbed and an umbrella for 30 kuna and 20 kuna, respectively, and a catamaran can be rented for 50 kuna.
Baška Voda beaches
The beaches of Baška Voda also belong to the Makarska Riviera in Central Dalmatia . They are mainly small pebbles, although there are sandy ones, and they are gentle, which makes it convenient to rest on them with children. There are beaches where pine trees grow right next to the water – in their shade you can hide from the sun, you don’t even need an umbrella.
Along the recreation area in Baška Voda, there is an equipped embankment, which is the focus of local resort life. Cafes, souvenir shops, concerts are held on the embankment, and there is a playground with children’s entertainment.

The beach strip stretched for 4 km to the north and south from the central part of Tuchepa, parallel to it is a wide embankment with an endless number of cafes, bars, and shops. The beach is equipped with cabins for changing clothes, shower stalls with fresh water. Sunbeds (50 kuna) and umbrellas can be rented.
Not far from Tuchepa, on the Oseyava peninsula , there is Nugal beach , where nudists sunbathe. From Tuchepa, you can get there in 30 minutes along the footpath through the forest park – there is no other way. This beach perfectly combines wild nature and modern comfortable conditions for recreation.
How much will a holiday in Makarska in Central Dalmatia cost?
The main items of expenses during any vacation are accommodation and food. Croatia is not one of the “cheap” countries, but by European standards it is quite suitable for various budget possibilities. What will be the prices for holidays in Croatia, and in particular, in Makarska, in 2018?
Residence
It is simply amazing how such a small town on the Riviera provides such a variety of accommodation options: apartments, villas with pools, apartments, hotels… This resort is ready to receive an infinite number of guests, but it is still better to think about the place of accommodation in advance.

Šibenik seaside in Central Dalmatia
Several resorts are located on the coast of the Šibenik region, of which Vodice and Primošten stand out . Not far from Primošten, in the area called Butsavac , vineyards were cultivated by the diligent hands of the inhabitants by tediously pulling out stones and creating from them regular rectangular rough stone fences, among which only two or three vines grew. Hangman
The history of Šibenik begins in 1066, when King Petar Krešimir IV built a fortress at the mouth of the Krna River, which in 1298 received the status of a city, which became the center of the diocese. The Cathedral of St. James
Over the years, Gallows has been significantly damaged several times. For a long time, the city was under the power of different states. Its appearance was most influenced by the Venetians, many palaces were built during their stay in the city. That is, the Venetians … in fact, the largest and best builder of the 15th century – Juraj Dalmatinets – had the greatest influence on our opinion. In addition to other important buildings, he took a large part in the construction of St. Jacob’s Cathedral (1431-1535), which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. In his honor, his sculpture is placed in front of the cathedral.
Perhaps you do not know that the cathedral is the only building in the world where the building material is only stone. The stone cubes were precisely carved and then placed on top of each other without the use of wet processes. The external and internal outlines are identical. Juraj Dalmatinac designed an absolutely unprecedented type of apse for his time, where he depicted portraits of 72 completely ordinary people. Until that time, the church building did not contain anything similar. He participated in the construction of the cathedral for thirty years. The construction and architectural processes used here are unparalleled, never before and never since. Many outstanding artists and builders created this architectural treasure for more than a hundred years.
You can also see many ancient monasteries and churches in Sibenik, one of the oldest is the church of St. Chrysogonus of the 12th century. Next to it, a bell found in 1266 under the sea near the island of Silba ( Central Dalmatia) is installed .
Many medieval and later buildings have also been preserved in the city: the Archbishop’s Palace , the city cistern, the Prince’s Palace , city walls.
City Hall
On the cathedral square opposite The Cathedral of St James, there is another attraction of Šibenik – the ancient building of the town hall. Built in the middle of the 16th century, the two-story building is designed in the Renaissance style.
The facade of the town hall is a terrace with columns and arches – a characteristic detail of ancient architecture that protects the premises from the hot southern sun. The openwork fence of the terrace of the second floor is decorated with lion heads and floral ornaments.
Two stone stairs leading to the second floor were added to the sides of the facade 200 years after the construction of the building. In 1943, this landmark of Šibenik suffered from bombings and was restored to its original form in the post-war period.
Now the town hall has lost its purpose, the government offices and meeting hall have been converted into premises for marriage registration and a restaurant.
Church of Saint Barbara (Crkva sv. Barbare)
On one of the streets of the historical center of Sibenik, there is a landmark that attracts many tourists – the Church of St. Barbara. The building of this Catholic church was erected in the middle of the 16th century. Initially, the church was dedicated to Saints Benedict and Nicholas, but later it was rededicated in honor of Saint Barbara.
The modest stone facade of the church is decorated with unusual old clocks with a dial divided into 24 time sectors and a bas-relief depicting an ancient coat of arms. The pediment of the building is topped by an open belfry with three bells. But it is not only the ancient architecture that attracts this active church. The main thing it is famous for is the church art museum located within its walls.
The exhibits of the museum of church art belong to the 14th-18th centuries, but there are also rarities dating back to the 11th century. The exposition of the museum impresses with its wealth and stylistic diversity, it presents paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and precious church utensils.
Harbor and port (Channel-Harbour)
The city of Sibenik ( Central Dalmatia ) has a large number of attractions, which is not surprising, considering its thousand-year history. But even if they were not, the harbor and port alone would be enough to leave an unforgettable impression of this city on its guests.
Channel-Harbour is a favorite place for city dwellers and vacationers. From here opens a wonderful panorama of the sea with numerous coastal islands, on which the old city rises above the harbor, the majestic cathedral of St. James, the water area of the port with ships, yachts and boats. It is advisable to set aside at least two hours for a visit to the Vina Rak wine shop. During this time, you can visit a vineyard, a garden with olive and fig trees, visit a wine bottling workshop and wine cellars. In the houses there are restaurants of national cuisine with stylized interiors and staff in folk costumes.
To the sound of Croatian folk instruments in the restaurant-museum, you can taste local cuisine with home-baked bread and order the best wines of Croatia. The prices are quite high, but the portions are not small, usually one portion is enough for two.
Aquapark Solaris
The only water park in Šibenik is located in the Solaris hotel complex . It is small in size and will be interesting mainly for children up to 10-12 years old.

The price of a ticket for adults and children taller than 1.2 m is 110 kuna (about € 22). For a child with a height of 0.9-1.2 m, you will have to pay 80 kunas, children below 0.9 m are free. Car parking will cost 30 kuna for the whole day.

Sibenik in Central Dalmatia is an ideal place not only for lovers of sights, but also for “sea” recreation, as well as for young people, for whom there are a sufficient number of night clubs, discotheques and all kinds of beach entertainment.
Aurora is a night club located one kilometer from the center of Sibenik. The dance floor of the club is considered one of the largest in this part of the Adriatic coast. In the summer months, the club can accommodate more than three thousand visitors at the same time. Aurora has a game room, a pizzeria and a kitchen with a grill. The show program of the club consists of national Croatian performances, entertainment shows and go-go dances. You can also dance and order on the terrace of the club.
Annual holidays are held in the city from June to September. The most popular of them is the medieval costumed folklore carnival , which takes place at the beginning of autumn. There is also a wonderful organ school in Šibenik in the summer.

How to get there
Šibenik is located near the cities of Zadar and Split, where there are international airports. It is connected with them and other big cities of Croatia by regular bus service.
The gallows is located on the Adriatic highway. It is convenient to get to the city from Trogir (58 km) and Zadar (64 km).
