In our opinion, Thailand is one of the most fascinating and diverse travel destinations in the world. With its good connections to Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, Thailand is a central hub in Southeast Asia. Here, different cultures collide and shape the country – from Thai, Chinese, and Indian influences to traces of the colonial past in individual regions.

Popular cities include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ayutthaya, and Phuket. Those who love nature should take a detour to Khao Sok National Park or the mountainous landscapes in the north. The most beautiful islands include Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Chang, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi and the Similan Islands. You can also discover impressive temples, dense jungle and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world in Thailand.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO THAILAND

You can travel Thailand year-round, as the tropical climate offers temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. However, the best time to travel depends on the region. In central and northern Thailand, such as Bangkok or Chiang Mai, the months from November to February are ideal, as it is pleasantly warm and dry. Temperatures rise from March, and the rainy season from May to October brings occasional showers.

On the west coast of southern Thailand, around Phuket, Krabi, and the Andaman Sea, the best time to travel is from November to April, while the southwest monsoon brings more rainfall from May to October. The east coast, including Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, is particularly suitable for travel from February to September, as the heaviest rainfall usually occurs between October and January.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SIGHTS

What we love about Thailand? The perfect blend of nature, culture, and modernity. In Bangkok, impressive temples like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace await you, while in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya you can immerse yourself in Thailand’s history. The north, around Pai and Chiang Rai, boasts breathtaking mountain landscapes and exciting insights into the lives of the hill tribes.

Those seeking nature and adventure will find the perfect place in Khao Sok National Park – dense jungle, enormous limestone cliffs, and a turquoise-blue reservoir make it a real highlight. And of course, the islands are not to be missed: Koh Phangan, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Lanta, or the Similan Islands – all with stunning beaches and a spectacular underwater world.

CURRENCY IN THE COUNTRY

In Thailand, you pay with the Thai Baht (THB), often simply referred to as “Baht.” One Baht is divided into 100 Satang. Cash is especially important in markets, smaller towns, and street stalls, while card payments are somewhat more common in cities, hotels, and tourist areas.

ATMs are available everywhere, although withdrawal fees often apply. Exchanging euros or US dollars is straightforward at exchange offices and usually cheaper than at banks. We recommend a travel credit card, which allows you to withdraw cash and pay in stores free of charge.

ENTERING THAILAND

To enter Thailand, you need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your entry date. German citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. Those wishing to stay longer can apply for a tourist visa in advance or apply for a 30-day extension on site. Please note that entry regulations are subject to change.

Health Vaccination Doctor

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

Medical care in Thailand is good in cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, with modern hospitals and English-speaking staff. However, care may be limited in rural areas and on smaller islands. A well-stocked first-aid kit and international health insurance are therefore recommended.

There are no mandatory vaccinations, but standard vaccinations such as tetanus, measles, and diphtheria should be up to date. Hepatitis A is recommended as a travel vaccination, and depending on the type of trip, rabies or typhoid may also be useful.

SAFETY IN THAILAND

Thailand is generally a safe travel destination with a stable situation and a hospitable population. Nevertheless, vigilance doesn’t hurt, especially in cities like Bangkok, Phuket, or Pattaya, where pickpocketing can occur. Keep an eye on your valuables in busy areas and use Grab or Bolt instead of regular taxis at night.

In rural areas and on less touristy islands, you can generally move around without any problems. However, you should be careful when engaging in outdoor activities: strong currents on beaches, difficult terrain in national parks, and wild animals can be underestimated. With common sense and a little caution, nothing will stand in the way of your adventure!

Handy Smartphone WLAN Internet

INTERNET IN THAILAND

As a tourist in Thailand, you can easily access the internet – we were able to use reliable WLAN almost everywhere, be it in hotels, restaurants, cafés, or even at airports and shopping centers.

If you want to be online on the go, a local SIM card is worthwhile. You can get affordable prepaid packages with fast 4G and sometimes 5G from dtac, among others. A SIM card often costs less than €10 and contains several gigabytes of data (including unlimited ones). Alternatively, you can use an eSIM, e.g. B. from Airalo*.

FOOD IN THAILAND

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

In Thailand, you’ll always get from A to B somehow – no matter how chaotic it seems at first glance, the Thais know exactly how it works. In cities like Bangkok, there is a well-developed network of Skytrain (BTS), subway (MRT), and buses.

You can easily call taxis or motorbike taxis with Grab or Bolt. On islands and in rural areas, you’ll often find yourself traveling by songthaew (shared taxi), scooter, or private car service.

The long-distance bus network is well-developed and often a cheap and comfortable way to travel throughout the country. Trains are also a great option—especially the night trains to Chiang Mai or Surat Thani.

The best place to book bus, train, or ferry tickets is www.12go.com* or directly at the stations.
