For us, Slovakia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. It’s not only home to countless natural highlights, but also to pretty mountain villages, cool cities, and a wealth of tradition. Between Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria, the country seems to be a bit lost. Yet Slovakia certainly has nothing to hide. The country rocks!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Slovakia tour and traveled right across the country. The people are incredibly friendly, the infrastructure is excellent, and, by the way, the nature is simply amazing. We were out in nature almost every day, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and experiencing spectacular views. Ah, what a beautiful country! You can find all the information on this page.

Getting there
Do you know what’s really cool? That you absolutely DO NOT need a plane to travel to Slovakia. We traveled from Rostock by train and it worked without a hitch. Tickets are available from just €39.90 one-way. Who needs a plane when you can take a relaxing train ride? Most people go to Vienna and then over to Bratislava. Or you can travel via Dresden and Prague.
Entry
To enter Slovakia you only need your ID. Generally speaking, nobody is checked, as the borders are open. Slovakia has been an EU member state since 2004. If you want to stay longer than three months, you must register and log in. You can find more information here: Bratislava Embassy Information Sheet.
Transport
In Slovakia, you can travel comfortably in a rental car*. The roads are very well developed and mostly in top condition. Alternatively, you can also take the buses. Hardly any other country in Europe has such a dense bus network. You can buy tickets at the train station, from a ticket machine, or from the driver. And you don’t need a car in the larger cities either.
Costs
Slovakia is not a particularly cheap travel destination. Prices are comparable to those in Germany. 1 liter of gasoline currently costs €1.35, for example. Restaurants can be expensive, but can also be cheaper. This depends on the region, of course. We spent an average of around €30 per night for our accommodation. Tourist activities were also comparatively expensive. But whether it’s expensive or cheap, a trip through Slovakia is worth it. You’ll soon learn more about costs in Slovakia here. Post to follow…
Accommodation
You can find practically anything in the country: hostels, vacation apartments, guesthouses, hotels, private rooms on Airbnb, or mountain huts. Prices fluctuate greatly depending on the time of year. We traveled in the country off-season in September and paid an average of €30 per night for the two of us. In Bratislava, on the other hand, it was only €13 per bed in a four-bed room in a hostel. We also always booked accommodation for the next day only the evening before. That worked out great. We usually book through Booking.com* or Airbnb*.
Travel Time
Are you planning a trip to Slovakia but don’t know exactly when to travel? The best time to travel for a hiking holiday is generally during the peak summer months. Then it’s pleasantly warm even in the higher regions. We were there in September and enjoyed a truly pleasant, spring-like climate. Autumn and spring are generally good seasons for a round trip. Many people also come between December and April for an extensive skiing holiday in the mountains.
Internet
We never had any problems with the internet. We had Wi-Fi in all accommodations. Our smartphone reception was always really good, too. Thanks to EU roaming, we were able to continue surfing normally in Slovakia with our existing plans without having to change anything. This meant we had constant internet access on our phones anyway. The country has a very modern internet infrastructure. Providers here include Orange, T-Mobile, SWAN, UPC, and Dial Telecom.
Vaccinations
Your health is paramount—no matter where you are. Therefore, you should be well informed before your trip so you don’t experience any unpleasant surprises in the land of your dreams. You have nothing to fear in Slovakia. However, it’s always a good idea to get your standard vaccinations updated (tetanus, polio, measles, typhoid, hepatitis A & B). You should also definitely take out international health insurance. You can find information about the most important travel insurance policies here*.
Safety
Slovakia is a very safe country to travel to. Of course, there are some bad apples everywhere. There have been repeated car break-ins in the past. So, it’s best to park your car in guarded/official parking lots and not on the side of the road. Pickpocketing is an increasing problem in the capital. But it’s no different than in other vacation destinations. We felt very comfortable and safe. But that’s also due to the friendly, helpful people in the country.
