Here you can find our Saint Lucia travel tips
Getting there
From Germany, you can fly with Air France via Paris to Martinique. From there, you would then have to take the ferry or plane. British Airways flies from London to Saint Lucia all year round. Generally, you can expect prices between €700 and €1000. Air Canada also flies to Saint Lucia via Toronto, as do other foreign airlines. Unfortunately, Thomas Cook no longer exists, and so does the connection from Manchester.
Entry
You do not need a visa in advance to enter Saint Lucia. With a valid passport, you will receive a 90-day residence permit on site. You should be able to provide proof of your onward or return journey. On the plane, you will also receive an entry document, which you must fill out completely. You should also keep your exit document safely stored for your departure. You can find more information on this topic at the Federal Foreign Office.
Transport
Small minibuses run throughout Saint Lucia. Especially in the north and west, you can easily get from A to B by bus. Buses have an “M” on their license plates. Tickets usually cost only 1 to 3 Euros. It’s easier to rent a car, but these are relatively expensive. Taxis are also very expensive. We paid $100 to get from the airport to the north. You can easily explore the island on your own.
Costs
Saint Lucia is not unaffordable, but it’s not cheap either. Generally, the Caribbean is very expensive. You should budget at least €70 to €100 per night. An SUV costs just under €70 per day. We spent an average of around €30 to €40 a day on food and drink. Every now and then, you can find cheap local food on the streets, or even an Airbnb room for only €50 a night. On average, you should expect to spend around €100 a day per person. As always, there’s no upper limit.
Accommodation
In Saint Lucia, you can find just about anything. There are small private rooms as well as luxurious villas. In general, however, it’s more expensive in the Caribbean than in other countries. You can find a few inexpensive rooms on Airbnb* for €30 to €40 a night. However, if you want more comfort, you’ll have to expect to pay at least €60 to €80. If you want to treat yourself, you’ll find countless great accommodations in Saint Lucia. We were able to stay in some of them. Our accommodations on Saint Lucia.
Travel time
There are two seasons on the island: the rainy season and the dry season. Online, you can find information that hurricane season is between June and November. However, we were told locally that it’s better to avoid the months of July, August, and September. The peak tourist season is mainly between December and March. However, you can expect higher prices and many more tourists then. We were on the island in November and had great weather with a few showers.
Internet
We were initially skeptical about the internet in Saint Lucia. Generally, you can find internet access everywhere, whether in restaurants or at your accommodation. We really benefited from a very good internet connection in every accommodation. If necessary, you can also buy a local SIM card with a data allowance on site. Simply look for the nearest Flow or Digicel store. You can find them there, for example, in Vieux Fort, Castries, or Rodney Bay.
Vaccinations
Your health is paramount – no matter where you are. You should therefore inform yourself well before your trip so that you don’t experience any nasty surprises in the land of your dreams. But first, the good news: there are no dangerous animals or diseases (dengue fever, malaria) on the island. You have nothing to fear here. However, it’s always a good idea to get your standard vaccinations updated (tetanus, polio or measles, typhoid, hepatitis A & B). The most important travel insurance policies here*.
Safety
Saint Lucia is generally a safe travel destination in the Caribbean. However, pickpockets are also found on this island. Unfortunately, you’ll be offered drugs everywhere. Simply politely decline and move on. The same tips apply as for other places. It’s best to leave valuables at home, avoid the dark, use ATMs inside banks, and travel across the island with common sense. More on this topic: Security and Credit Cards*.
