Oman is located on the southeast tip of the Arabian Peninsula and borders the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The country is about the size of Poland, but with only around 4.5 million inhabitants it is rather sparsely populated. Around half of the population has a migration background – many come from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or East Africa.

The official language is Arabic, but English, Urdu, Baluchi, and even Swahili are also widely spoken. Payment is made in Omani Rial (OMR), and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

☞ An impressive landscape of desert, mountains, coasts, and green oases awaits you.

COSTS & BUDGET

Oman is neither a very cheap travel destination, nor a very expensive one. We would classify the country as “average” in terms of costs. You can get a rental car from €40 per day, and a double room from around €60. In small local restaurants, you can get a hearty meal for €3 to €4.

Driving in Oman is fun, as gasoline costs just €0.55 per liter. Entrance fees to fortresses or museums usually range from €5 to €8. Supermarket prices are similar to those in Germany. But, of course, there are more or less expensive products here, too. For a round-trip flight, you should expect to pay around €550 to €600 per person.

ACCOMMODATION IN OMAN

In Oman, you’ll find numerous hotels, guesthouses, vacation apartments, as well as chalets, tents, and camping pitches. Only in the interior of the country between the north and south will you find few accommodations (especially on the highway to Salalah). We stayed in modern hotels, traditional tents, cozy huts, and even beautiful, unique accommodations.

In Oman, you can find virtually everything, whether cheap, mid-priced, or very expensive. You should book special hotels before your trip, as they can book up quickly. We booked all accommodations before the trip, as our route was already planned.

DRIVING IN OMAN

Driving in Oman isn’t rocket science. You can drive yourself without worry and explore the country on your own. Traffic drives on the right, just like in Germany. The road network is very well developed and modern throughout almost the entire Sultanate. Road signs in the country are in Arabic and English. Officially, you’re only allowed to drive 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on country roads, and 120 km/h on highways. You should avoid driving at night, as there may be animals on the road or broken-down vehicles, which are usually not marked with a warning triangle. An International Driver’s License is not required to rent a vehicle, but we still had it with us and presented it at police checkpoints.

OMAN SIGHTSEEING PLACES

Oman is brimming with sights and highlights. We never would have imagined that this country would be so incredibly diverse and varied. Visit the small oasis town of Nizwa, explore the traditional irrigation canals in Misfat, stroll through the ruins in Birkat al Mouz, marvel at the sunrise in the Jebel Shams Mountains, and enjoy the sun under the palm trees of Salalah.

Of course, a tour of the capital, Muscat, and a trip to the beautiful Daymaniat Islands are also a must. Wadi Bani Khalid, Wadi Shab, and Wadi Al Arbeieen are also highly recommended.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO OMAN

You can actually travel to Oman all year round. For Europeans, the best or most popular time to travel is between November and March. Temperatures are pleasantly warm, especially in the higher-lying areas like Muscat and Nizwa. During the day, temperatures often range between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, while it gets cooler at night.

This is the best time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The summer months are very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40° Celsius. This time is less recommended for travel to Oman, especially if you don’t tolerate heat well. We were traveling in the country in November and had temperatures of at least 30°C throughout, and it never rained.

SAFETY IN OMAN

Many readers have asked us how safe a trip to Oman actually is. Our answer: EXTREMELY SAFE! We have probably never felt as safe in a country as we did in Oman. It’s not without reason that the Sultanate is one of the safest countries in the world.

The security in Oman is exemplary, and crime is practically a foreign concept here. We felt welcome and safe everywhere. The people are incredibly friendly, helpful, and open. We highly recommend a trip through Oman!!!

TRAVEL GUIDE TO OMAN

To prepare for our trip, we listened to a few podcasts and browsed through travel guides. We can recommend the travel guide from DuMont Verlag. We generally love this publisher’s travel guides and have countless on our bookshelves.

We also used the travel guide from Reise Know-How Verlag to prepare for our trip. We were and are very satisfied with both books. Be sure to watch a couple of documentaries as well: ☞ Oman – Oasis of the Orient or Wild Beauties: Oman.
