Namibia Travel Blog | Namibia is located in southwestern Africa and is known for its spectacular landscapes, ranging from endless deserts and wild coastlines to wildlife-rich national parks. With around 2.5 million inhabitants spread across a vast area, Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. The capital, Windhoek, is located quite centrally and is the starting point for many trips through the country. Particularly impressive are the vastness, the tranquility, and the incredible diversity of nature and wildlife – from the dunes of the Namib to the elephants in Etosha National Park.

Namibia is at the top of our list of dream destinations – especially if you enjoy independent travel. In June 2025, we’ll finally be off: We’re fulfilling a long-held dream and starting our round trip across the country in an all-wheel drive vehicle. We want to explore Namibia for almost four weeks – with many stops, exciting experiences, and certainly unforgettable moments. Highlights planned include Etosha National Park, the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the rugged Atlantic coast near Swakopmund, the remote Damaraland, and the impressive Fish River Canyon in the south. Camping in Namibia is the perfect way to experience the country up close and personal. Many accommodations offer their own campsites with everything you need: shady spots, barbecue pits (braais), clean restrooms, and sometimes even a small pool. What’s especially cool: In many national parks and on farms, you can spend the night in the middle of nature. With a 4×4 and roof tent, you’re super flexible on the road and can spontaneously decide where to go next.

Traveling through Namibia with a 4×4 and roof tent feels like pure adventure – but with comfort. The road conditions in the country are generally good, but many exciting places can only be reached with four-wheel drive. An off-road vehicle with a roof tent gives you maximum freedom: You can stay at remote campsites, wake up in the middle of nature, and move on as you please each day. COSTS & BUDGET

Namibia is not a typical budget travel destination. Campsites usually cost between €10 and €20 per person per night, while lodges can easily charge €100 or more depending on the standard. A 4×4 with a roof tent costs around €80–150 per day, depending on the season. Add to that fuel costs, food, and national park entrance fees (usually between €5 and €10 per day). Namibia can be easily planned as an adventure trip with camping or as a more comfortable lodge tour – depending on how much you want to spend.

ENTRY & VISA

Since April 1, 2025, German citizens require a paid visa to enter Namibia. This can be applied for either in advance online as an e-visa or upon arrival at certain border crossings. The visa currently costs 1,600 Namibian dollars (approx. €75) per person. Children under 6 years are exempt from the fee, while children between 6 and 11 years pay a reduced fee of 800 Namibian dollars (approx. €38).

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO NAMIBIA

Basically, you can travel to Namibia all year round, but the most popular time is between May and October – during the dry season. Daytimes are pleasantly warm, nights are cool, and animals gather at watering holes, providing perfect conditions for safaris.

However, from June to August, it can get quite cold at night, especially in the desert. From November onward, it gets hotter, and between December and March, some regions can experience short but heavy rains. The landscape is particularly green at this time – ideal for those who prefer a quieter environment and fewer tourists.

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

Your health is important – even in Botswana. Recommended vaccinations are hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus, and yellow fever (when entering from yellow fever areas). Malaria protection is also recommended, as there is a high risk in some regions. Seek medical advice beforehand and make sure you have the necessary vaccinations. We had no problems with malaria or other diseases.

SAFETY IN THE COUNTRY

Namibia is considered a safe travel destination, especially for self-drivers. Nevertheless, as everywhere, you should be careful in cities, especially in busy places or when refueling. It’s best not to walk alone through unfamiliar areas at night, and we generally avoid public transport. Find out about current security and road conditions in advance, especially during the rainy season. We personally felt safe and comfortable throughout Namibia.

INTERNET IN NAMIBIA

In cities and along main roads, network coverage in Namibia is generally good. A local SIM card from MTC is particularly good for your trip – the network is reliable, and data packages are inexpensive.

In more remote regions, especially national parks or the Namib Desert, however, you may not have any network coverage at all. We therefore recommend downloading important information, accommodation options, and offline maps beforehand. Public Wi-Fi is available in many lodges, cafes, and campsites, but the quality varies greatly.
