Our self-guided tour through Jordan

Jordan is only a 5-6 hour flight from Germany, located between Syria, Israel, Lebanon, and Iraq. Despite the surrounding crisis areas, Jordan is a safe travel destination and awaits you with countless highlights. We took a fantastic tour with our own rental car, traveling from Aqaba to the Wadi Rum Desert, then on to the rock city of Petra, the Dana Biosphere Reserve, the Dead Sea, and Amman. If you have more than 7 days, you can also go to Jerash, Irbid or to various ruins in the desert.

Popular places in Jordan include Aqaba on the Red Sea with its fascinating underwater world, the endless expanses of the Wadi Rum desert, Wadi Mujib with its deep gorges and hot springs, the rock city of Petra, Little Petra, Madaba, the Ma’in Hot Springs as well as the baptism site of Bethany and the Yarmouk Nature Reserve. No matter which route you choose, Jordan rocks! We hope you enjoy our Jordan travel blog.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO JORDAN

Generally, you can travel to Jordan year-round. The most popular travel months are March, April, May, September, October, and November. It gets really hot in Jordan during the summer months, so you should only travel if you can handle high temperatures. The climate is much more pleasant in spring and autumn. We were very lucky with the weather even in January, although rain, wind, and snow can certainly occur.

CURRENCY & WITHDRAWING CASH

In Jordan, you pay with the Jordanian Dinar (JD). 1 € currently gives you 0.78 JD (as of January 2020). The currency consists of coins of 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50 piastres, and banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50. The banknotes, in particular, look really nice because they’re so colorful. At the beginning of a trip, we always withdraw €100–200 in the respective currency at the airport or in the city to have some cash on hand. All information on cash withdrawals, credit cards, and currency exchange can be found in this article.

ENTRY AND VISA FOR JORDAN

If you want to enter Jordan as a German tourist, you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after entry into Jordan. A temporary passport is also accepted, but an identity card is not. You should also arrange a return or onward ticket before departure, as most airlines will require this at the airport in Germany. You can find further information on entry, visas, and customs regulations in the article.

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

No vaccinations are required for entry into Jordan. You only need to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a yellow fever area or have been in transit through a yellow fever area for more than 12 hours. The same applies if you’re coming from a polio area. Make sure your standard vaccinations are up to date; then you’ll be on the safe side. Jordan is a fairly clean country in this regard (except for the garbage everywhere) with good hygiene standards.

SAFETY IN THE COUNTRY

First of all: We never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in the country. We were warmly welcomed everywhere and always treated fairly. The locals are truly hospitable, helpful, and cosmopolitan. Jordan suffers from the bad reputation of its surrounding countries, such as Syria, Iraq, and Israel. Jordan is a very safe country to travel to, and the locals are always concerned about the well-being of their guests. Incidents can naturally occur anywhere, so you should avoid the border areas with Iraq and Syria, as well as crowds (especially in mosques), demonstrations, arguments, and fights.
