Belize is a small country in Central America, right next to Honduras, Mexico, and Guatemala. The country is brimming with diversity and adventure. It is diverse, multifaceted, and incredibly colorful. It’s not a country of skyscrapers, shopping malls, or gigantic buildings, but a country with breathtaking nature and wildlife.
Here in Belize, you can expect stunningly beautiful islands, adventurous caves, unique Mayan ruins, the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea, a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of reggae music, coconuts, colorful hammocks, and jungle. In Belize, we saw howler monkeys, turtles, rays, nurse sharks, and many other animals for the first time in our lives. We were on one of the most beautiful islands in the world and felt like Robinson Crusoe. “Belize it or not!” We’ll give you our insider tips, highlights and all the information you need to know for your trip.

Getting there
You can reach Belize via the small, international airport in Belize City. It’s just a stone’s throw from the States. We flew with Air Canada from Amsterdam to Toronto and then on to Belize. Flights to Belize are generally very expensive. However, you can often find good flight deals to places like Cancun, Mexico. You could combine these with your Belize trip. From Germany, flights to Belize with a stopover cost at least €700 or more.
Entry
You do not need a visa (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) to enter Belize. You may stay in the country for up to 30 days for tourist purposes (only with proof of a return ticket). If you want to stay longer (up to 7 months), you will need a permit, which you can apply for locally at the immigration office of the district in question for approximately USD 50 per month. If you leave Belize overland, you must pay an exit fee of USD 19. The exit fee for air travel is already included in your flight price.
Transportation
Within the country, you can travel very cheaply by public bus. The so-called “chicken buses” connect almost all the areas that might be of interest to you. A ride usually costs only a few euros, but you should still allow enough time. For 80 km, you can easily spend 2 to 3 hours on the bus. You can find more information here: Guide to Belize. Small planes fly to the various islands and towns. A flight from Belize City to Caye Caulker, for example, costs around €60.
Costs
In general, Belize is a fairly expensive country to travel to. You pay locally with the US dollar or the Belize dollar. 1 US dollar is always worth 2 Belize dollars. In the country itself, you can get by on around €40 to €60 a day. Accommodation costs vary depending on the region. You can get a room in a hostel for €10, a private room from €30. Bus transfers are very cheap, but activities are comparatively expensive. Here you can find our detailed article about costs in Belize.
Accommodation
In Belize, you can find everything: hotels, hostels, bungalows, apartments, or private Airbnb accommodations. A simple room for two people starts at €30 on the islands or €20 in Belize. We usually book our accommodations through Booking.com* or Airbnb*. We’ve had nothing but good experiences with both platforms. Since we knew our route in advance, we booked all our accommodations from Germany.
Travel Time
Although Belize is small, it still has quite diverse climatic conditions. The peak season runs from February to May (dry season). The official rainy season, on the other hand, extends from September to November. However, heavy rainfall can also occur in June and July. We had an average of 28 degrees Celsius in February and very rarely rain. The average annual temperature is 26 degrees Celsius.
Health Insurance
Travel insurance is essential. Anything can happen at any time, and in countries outside the EU, it can quickly become expensive. To avoid the financial risk, you should purchase international health insurance. There are numerous providers, which usually cover a period of one year and a travel period of 6-8 weeks per trip. The benefits are important, so you should compare and check them carefully. International health insurance is available from as little as €8 per year (more information about travel insurance here).
Vaccinations
Your health is paramount – no matter where you are. You should therefore inform yourself thoroughly before your trip so that you don’t experience any unpleasant surprises in the country of your dreams. We recommend the generally recommended standard vaccinations, especially up-to-date vaccinations against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), measles, and a basic vaccination against poliomyelitis/polio. Depending on your age and health, there may be additional recommendations. You can find vaccination recommendations at the Federal Foreign Office.
Safety
In general, Belize is a safe country to travel to. But as with any other country in the world, you should travel with your eyes open and use common sense. It’s best not to wear expensive jewelry and leave valuables at the hotel. You should also handle your credit card carefully. While you’re there, only take licensed taxis and don’t accept drinks from strangers in bars. And be careful: Crime has increased significantly in Belize City, so be careful when traveling there. You can also find more information about safety at the Federal Foreign Office.
