HOLIDAYS IN ALBANIA – OUR BEST TIPS

Our trip through Albania was by far one of the most exciting trips we’ve ever taken. We can’t tell you exactly why we wanted to travel to this country so much; the thought of Albania was just there at some point and wouldn’t let us go. The people are incredibly friendly and helpful; they’ll give you your last shirt. That was our impression of the locals we were lucky enough to get to know. And that’s just one great side of this country.

We drove from the southernmost tip of the country along the coast to the capital, Tirana. We also made a few stops in the hinterland. On this page, we’d like to share our best Albania travel tips with you and show you the many beautiful corners of the country. Albania is exciting, adventurous, beautiful, warm, open-minded, and certainly an “underdog” among the Balkan states. But one mustn’t forget that there are also not-so-nice sides to the country, such as the past, the huge garbage problem, and the poverty.

ACCOMMODATION IN ALBANIA

You can book accommodation easily and conveniently on Booking.com*. You can also find a huge selection of accommodations in Albania on Airbnb*. For a simple room, you usually pay only €15 including breakfast; you can get a 4-star hotel in the capital for €30 to €40 in the low season. Albania is generally a very affordable travel destination. However, the standard is not comparable to that in Germany. The rooms are generally simply furnished and rather old-fashioned in style. But everything is perfect for sleeping.

ALBANIA SIGHTS

Albania is an exciting and thrilling Balkan country. Before our trip, we didn’t know much about this little corner of the world. But that was precisely what intrigued us and piqued our curiosity. ENTRY & VISA

You do not need a visa to enter Albania. You can enter easily with your ID card or passport. Of course, it is important that your travel document is still valid. If you want to stay longer than 90 days, you must register with the Border and Migration Directorate within the first 30 days and apply for a residence permit there. You can find more information on this topic at the Federal Foreign Office.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO ALBANIA

Albania is an attractive travel destination, especially during the off-season (May, June, September, and October). Most vacationers arrive in midsummer (July and August). Accommodations and restaurants are naturally more expensive then. Many beaches are also less idyllic. In our opinion, the best time to travel is June and early July, before the holidays. Then you can expect warm temperatures. It also doesn’t rain as often as it does in March and April, for example.

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

Your health is paramount – no matter where you are. You should therefore inform yourself thoroughly before your trip so you don’t experience any unpleasant surprises in the land of your dreams. Medical care there is inadequate and doesn’t meet German standards. It is always advisable to check your standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination schedule and complete them if necessary (tetanus, polio or measles, typhoid, hepatitis A & B).

SAFETY IN ALBANIA

Albania is a very safe country to travel to. We never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome in the country. The Albanians are very warm, open, and hospitable people. Despite poverty and unemployment, the locals always exuded a certain calm and serenity. Driving in Albania is also very safe. Outside of larger towns, traffic is very quiet and relaxed. There are some bad apples in Albania, just like in every other country in the world. Use common sense.

INTERNET IN ALBANIA

We were initially skeptical about the internet in Albania. Generally, you can find internet access everywhere, whether in a restaurant or vacation rental. On average, you can surf at 4-5 mbit/s, but expect occasional connection issues in your accommodations. We had Wi-Fi in every accommodation, which was perfectly sufficient for our laptop work in most cases. You can get a “Vodafone Club” number and add a data package. For example, 1.5 GB starts at 1300 lek (approx. €11.20).
