Interesting facts about Ravensburg

The city of Ravensburg is located near Lake Constance (only 50 minutes from Uhldingen-Mühlhofen) and is surrounded by a beautiful hilly landscape. The proximity to Switzerland and Austria makes the city a perfect starting point for cool excursions (e.g., only 1.5 hours to Montafon).

Ravensburg is often called the “City of Towers and Gates” because of the 17 medieval defense towers and city gates that still exist. Among the most famous are the Mehlsack, a white tower that is considered the city’s landmark, and the Obertor, the highest and oldest preserved city gate.

The city has a long history dating back to the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, Ravensburg was an important trading center, particularly for textiles and paper, and a member of the Swabian League of Cities. During a tour of the old town, you will repeatedly come across buildings that bear witness to this history.

Obertor

The Obertor in Ravensburg is one of the most important and probably oldest buildings in the city and is considered the most important and best-preserved city gate. It marks the entrance to the historic old town and is located right next to the Mehlsack and the Hotel Obertor. While the gate once played a central role in the defense system, today it serves as a popular photo subject.

From there, the street leads down towards the town hall, Blaserturm, and Marienplatz. In our opinion, Marktstraße is one of the most beautiful streets in the old town, as there are numerous attractive house facades, shops and museums to admire on both sides.

Meilsack Observation Tower

As already mentioned at the beginning, Ravensburg is also often Known as the “City of Gates and Towers,” it still boasts 17 medieval defense towers and city gates. The 51-meter-high Mehlsack is a white watchtower dating from 1425, located next to the Obertor (Upper Gate) at the highest point of the old town.

For this reason, it is recognizable from afar. The tower owes its name to its color and shape. From June to September, you can climb the Mehlsack every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adults pay €3.50, young people between 12 and 18 years pay €2, and children up to 11 years are admitted free.

Veitsburg Viewpoint

From the Mehlsack (defensive tower), a short path leads up the winding Veitsburg Castle. From the medieval hilltop castle complex, you have a fantastic view over the rooftops of Ravensburg’s old town.

The slightly longer route runs along the “Philosophers’ Path” through the Burghaldentorkel and has information panels at several stations introducing important German philosophers.

The light and color atmosphere up there is truly beautiful, especially at sunset. The historic walls now house a youth hostel, the Atelier Tian restaurant, and the so-called Bagnato Castle.

One of the top sights in Ravensburg is the so-called Blaserturm (Blaser Tower). It is located right in the heart of the historic old town on Marienplatz. The Blaserturm was built in the 13th century as part of the city fortifications and served as a defense tower for a long time.

It was one of the watch and signal towers from which city guards watched over Ravensburg and the surrounding area, providing early warning of dangers such as fire or attackers. In the 15th century, the tower was expanded and reached its current height of 51 meters. Since then, it has dominated the cityscape and is one of the tallest towers in the city.

The Blaserturm can be climbed and offers a great viewing platform from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the old town of Ravensburg and the surrounding area. The climb is well worth it! During the season, the tower is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In the Middle Ages, the Town Hall was the seat of the city council and the center of municipal administration. Decisions about city politics, trade, and the daily lives of its citizens were made here. Even today, the town hall serves as the seat of the city administration and is a central location for political decisions in Ravensburg.

Ravensburg Weekly Market

The popular and lively weekly market takes place every Saturday in the old town. Over 100 stalls sell fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, baked goods, flowers, delicatessen, cheese, meat, fish, and much more. We really enjoyed strolling through the alleys and visiting the many stalls.

During the Ravensburg Market Delights city tour (bookable in the Experience Shop), we learned more about Ravensburg’s centuries-old importance as a central market town. Small snacks and great information about the stall and shop owners were even included.

Schadbrunnen

The Schadbrunnen is arguably one of the most famous fountains in the city and is also a popular photo subject. The fountain was designed by the artist and steel sculptor Robert Schad.

In the Old Town, you’ll find other fountains, such as the Landsknechtbrunnen (Restaurant Kupferle), the Town Hall Fountain with the Gänseliesel (behind the Town Hall), the Rutenbrunnen (near the Obertor), or the fountain above the Ravensburg Trading Company (near the Untertor).

Church of Our Lady

The second oldest parish church in the city, the Church of Our Lady, is located at the northern entrance to the historic old town and was built between 1279 and 1360. Its 45-meter-high tower and the choir windows from 1415 are striking.

Take a look inside the Church of Our Lady. Particularly worth seeing here are the Marienkapelle with its colorful glass panes, the choir stalls with their detailed carvings from the 15th century, and the main organ with 54 stops.

Right next to the Church of Our Lady, you can marvel at the 35.5-meter-high Frauentor, which was converted into a criminal prison from 1747 to 1751.

Gespinstmarkt

The heart of the oldest part of the city of Ravensburg is the car-free Gespinstmarkt. Not only cafés and restaurants invite you to linger, but also benches under shady trees.

A 42-meter-long watercourse has been installed in the upper Gespinstmarkt, which provides cooling, especially in the summer months. Also really cool is the giant mural of a donkey with a tie on the facade of Marktstraße 1.

Green Tower

The Green Tower, built at the beginning of the 15th century, has retained its original structure almost unchanged to this day. It owes its name to the green glazed tiles that adorn the roof.

Three tiles in the shape of Jewish heads once adorned the roof, serving as a protective symbol against the adjacent Jewish quarter (today Grüner-Turm-Straße, formerly Judengasse), but these are no longer preserved. From the 15th century until 1943, the tower was used as a prison.
