For us, Saxon Switzerland is a very special region in Germany, distinguished by its unique and breathtaking landscape. Characteristic are the striking sandstone cliffs and deep gorges, which give the region its fascinating and distinctive appearance. Don’t miss the Bastei Bridge, which spans the Bastei rock formation and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Elbe River and the surrounding landscape. The picturesque river valleys, especially along the Elbe, crisscross the region and provide a stunning backdrop for hikes along the banks. For climbers from all over the world, Saxon Switzerland is a true paradise. The numerous rock formations offer challenging climbing routes and challenging rock faces, making the area a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. A well-developed network of hiking trails leads through the impressive landscapes. We highly recommend a hike to the Schrammsteine, the Schwedenlöcher, the Pfaffenstein, or the Carolafelsen. 3. Fischland-Darß-Zingst

One of our favorite natural wonders in Germany is by far the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. A large part of the peninsula is part of this Vorpommern Boddenlandschaft National Park, which, with its salt marshes, lagoons, and lagoons, offers an important refuge for birds and a stunning natural landscape. The coast is characterized by the fascinating Bodden landscape, impressive with its gentle waves and numerous small islands. And not to be forgotten are the wide sandy beaches on the Baltic Sea (highlight: Hohe Düne in Pramort).

A unique nature reserve, the Darß Primeval Forest, is characterized by dense forests and ancient trees. This untouched forest offers a contrast to the coastal landscape and is home to many rare plants and animals. The peninsula is a paradise for birdwatchers, as it is an important resting and breeding ground for numerous bird species. Especially during the migratory bird season, the region offers impressive birdwatching opportunities (especially cranes).

The villages on Fischland-Darß-Zingst are characterized by charming thatched-roof houses, which are typical of the region and create an idyllic atmosphere. The “Darß Doors” are also unique and lend the peninsula a very special charm. Ahrenshoop is a well-known artists’ colony, further known for its creative atmosphere and galleries. Also recommended are the towns of Prerow, Zingst, Born and Wiek am Darß, and Wustrow.

4. Zugspitze

Want to see even more natural wonders in Germany? Then, of course, our country’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, shouldn’t be missed. The Zugspitze rises 2,962 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Germany. This impressive height naturally attracts visitors from all over the world. The Zugspitze also forms the border between Germany and Austria.

From the summit of the Zugspitze, there are breathtaking views of the surrounding Alps and valleys. On clear days, the view extends as far as the peaks of Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. The Zugspitzplatt Glacier is Germany’s only glacier. Despite the challenges posed by global warming, the glacier offers a fascinating natural spectacle.

10. Mecklenburg Lake District

With over 1,100 lakes, the Mecklenburg Lake District forms the largest contiguous lake landscape in Germany. Over 85% of the lakes are connected by canals and rivers. The heart of this breathtaking landscape is undoubtedly the Müritz, Germany’s largest inland lake. Here stretches the Müritz National Park, an untouched wilderness of dense forests, clear lakes, and diverse flora and fauna. 11. The Berchtesgaden Alps (Bavaria)

The Berchtesgaden Alps are a stunning mountain region in southern Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. The Königsstuhl is the most famous chalk cliff and one of the most impressive viewpoints on Rügen Island. It rises 118 meters above the Baltic Sea and offers spectacular views of the chalk cliffs and the sea. There is also a visitor platform and a visitor center near the Königsstuhl.

The chalk coast stretches for several kilometers along Rügen’s Baltic Sea coast. The white rocks form steep cliffs that rise majestically above the Baltic Sea. The view of the contrasting landscape, ranging from green forests to white cliffs to the blue sea, is breathtaking. The Victoria View is another viewpoint on the chalk coast, offering impressive views of the cliffs and the sea. From here, you can admire the impressive geology of the chalk cliffs.

The chalk cliff region offers numerous hiking trails that lead through the national park and along the coast. You have the opportunity to experience the impressive nature up close and enjoy various viewpoints. And did you know that the chalk cliffs on Rügen were a source of inspiration for the German painter Caspar David Friedrich, who created some of his famous paintings here? His works, such as “Chalk Cliffs on Rügen” and “The Monk by the Sea,” illustrate the dramatic beauty of this landscape.

13. Wadden Sea National Park

The Wadden Sea National Park is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Germany. This national park is a unique ecosystem on the North Sea coast that stretches across Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. The Wadden Sea is shaped by the tides. At low tide, a large part of the sea surface dries out, creating extensive mudflats. At high tide, these are flooded again. These dynamic changes create a unique living environment.

The Wadden Sea is home to an impressive variety of plants and animals. Many migratory birds rest here on their long journeys, and numerous fish species use the mudflats as nurseries. From the Wadden Sea, we make a short hop over to Lower Saxony. The Lüneburg Heath is particularly famous for its breathtaking heather blossom. In the summer months, the landscape transforms into a purple sea of blossom, allowing you to experience the blooming heather in all its glory. The region is part of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, which covers a large area and offers a diverse range of flora and fauna. The well-marked hiking and cycling trails allow you to explore the unique beauty of nature. In addition to the heather blooms, the Lüneburg Heath is home to various nature reserves that are home to rare plant and animal species. These include, for example, the Pietzmoor and the juniper area near Schneverdingen. Charming towns and villages also await you.
