Entering Mauritius without a Visa

You do not need a visa to enter Mauritius if you do not intend to stay in the country for longer than 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least another 6 months. You must also have a valid return or onward flight ticket. More on this later.

It is also important that children need their own passport. The entry in their parents’ passport or a child’s ID card has not been recognized in Mauritius since 2012. If only one parent is traveling to Mauritius with the child, a written consent form from the non-traveling legal guardian is required. Templates are available online in several languages.

Before traveling, we recommend completing the “All-in-One Travel Digital Form” online and presenting it upon entry. Without this form, you may experience waiting times.

We entered the country with a return ticket. However, upon arrival, we decided to stay longer than two weeks. You can find out how to extend your stay for another three months below.

It’s definitely free and not as complicated as you might think. Upon entry, you’ll also be asked for the address of your accommodation. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to prove that you have sufficient financial means for your stay in Mauritius.

Return and Onward Travel Tickets

You don’t need a visa to enter Mauritius, but you do need a valid return or onward ticket. While they don’t always ask for one, in an emergency, you’ll be in pretty bad shape. You could be denied entry this way.

You should therefore be able to prove your departure. A booking confirmation for accommodation in the next country should also be possible. We weren’t asked for an onward ticket; the customs officials were extremely friendly and helpful anyway.

Mauritius Visa and Requirements

If you are not coming to the island for personal reasons, you will need a visa. There is a student visa, which allows you to study and live on the island. There are also visas for temporary workers, spouses, business people, and immigrants. You should check with the embassy or consulate in advance. On the island, there is the Passport & Immigration Main Office in Port Louis on Lislet Geoffroy Street.

Extending your stay in Mauritius

Would you like to extend your stay for another three months after the first three months? No problem! You can extend your stay free of charge at the Immigration Office in Port Louis. You will need the following documents:

  • Visa Extension Application Form
  • Your original passport
  • Photocopy of your passport with arrival stamp
  • Photocopy of your return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of financial resources (bank statements)
  • Booking confirmation from the hotel/accommodation
  • Full address of your accommodation
  • If not a hotel, then a sponsorship letter from your landlord with full name, address, telephone number, occupation, and relationship
  • Photocopy of your National Identity Card and a gas or electricity bill from your landlord

If you have all these documents with you, it shouldn’t take long to get the stamp in your passport. Unfortunately, we didn’t have everything with us, so we had to come back. Overall, the process is actually quite simple and doesn’t cost a cent. Very visitor-friendly!

Important Customs Regulations

If you are traveling to Mauritius, you should adhere to the specified customs regulations. It is not permitted to bring in plants or food (exception: baby food for the plane). Items of everyday use are, of course, not a problem. Drugs and weapons (including pepper spray) are also strictly prohibited. Drug offenses are punishable by imprisonment of up to 60 years.

Caution: Cigarette papers, e-cigarettes, and water pipes are also considered drugs here. If you need to take certain medications, be sure to bring the original packaging and the prescription/certificate from your doctor (in English). Before you leave, you should check with the Mauritian embassy to find out exactly which medications are prohibited.

You may import duty-free:

  • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco
  • 1 liter of spirits
  • 2 liters of wine or beer
  • 250ml of eau de toilette
  • 100ml of perfume

You should also be aware that cash payments exceeding 500,000 rupees are prohibited in Mauritius. Unlimited amounts of local and foreign currency can be imported, but must be declared if the value exceeds 500,000 MUR (approximately 10,000 EUR).

Health Regulations Mauritius

If you are arriving directly from Germany, no vaccinations are required. However, as always, the Robert Koch Institute recommends that you check your standard vaccinations for up-to-date status before traveling. However, if you come from a yellow fever area, you will also need a yellow fever vaccination to enter Mauritius.

You should also expect to be asked many questions about your health. Mauritius is free of malaria, yellow fever, and the Zika virus. Of course, other tropical diseases can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Medical care is adequate on the island.

International Health Insurance

Something can happen at any time, so your health should be your top priority. If you are traveling to Mauritius, you should have international health insurance. Check with your health insurance provider beforehand to see if you have adequate health insurance coverage for your trip, including the cost of a rescue flight to Germany.

Without adequate insurance coverage, you’ll have to cover the costs yourself on site. And believe us, hospital visits and treatments abroad can quickly become very expensive. When traveling outside of Europe, you need separate insurance. You can get this for around €10 a year. With this international health insurance, you’re usually covered for trips of up to 6 weeks (or more).
