general information

The ski region Wilder Kaiser / Brixental (Wilder Kaiser / Brixental) in the mountains of Tyrol unites nine resort villages located at an altitude of 621 to 804 m.

The region rightfully calls itself “SkiWelt” (that is, “Ski World”): here, tourists are waiting for 250 km of prepared ski tracks and more than 90 ski lifts in the skiing area 620-1829 m above sea level, as well as skiing (165 km) and untouched slopes. The ski bus, of course, runs between all villages, and the entire region is covered by the ski pass.

The mighty and beautiful Wilder Kaiser ridge gave the region its name, but tourists can only admire its teeth from afar: the slopes of the “Wild Kaiser” are not intended for mountain skiing.

The center of skiing is considered to be Mount Hoe-Zalve (one thousand eight hundred and twenty-nine m), the top of which is easily accessible by lifts from almost all villages. Only in Westendorf and Kelchsau, located a little further away, you need to get on the ski bus first, and only then use the lift.

Each of the villages included in the region has its own skiing area. Yes, the skiing area of Going – Astberg (1267 m), Elmau – Hartkaiser (1525 m), Scheffau – Brandstadl (1650 m). The villages of Itter, Hopfgarten and Zelle are located near Hoe Salve. Due to its very successful central location in the sun-drenched valley, Zelle attracts special attention of tourists. A three-kilometer illuminated slope allows skiing and sledding even after dark. For fans of cross-country skiing, a 30-kilometer track is equipped, combined with a 130-kilometer ski run and the famous “Kaiserloipe” (225 km).

From Brixen, skiers go to Hochbrixen (1,300 m) or Candleralm on the opposite side of the Brixenthal valley.

Guests of Westendorf can reach the slopes of Horalpe (1,820 m), and Fleding (1,892 m) is not far away.

There are relatively few prepared slopes in Kelhzau, but there is a “half-pipe” for snowboarders (120 m). By the way, there is also a snowboard chute (100 m) in the Westendorf fan park.

The most difficult route (to Zell, along the northern slope) and the longest route (to Kraftalm and Itter, 8000 m, altitude difference 1200 m) lead down from the top of Hoe Salve.

The track Hochsöll – Zell (3000 m) is illuminated from 19.30 to 21.30 (except Sunday and Monday).

The palette of tracks is diverse and will satisfy any taste – most of the tracks are designed for beginners – many high-speed descents partly with speed measurement, enough tracks with night lighting, in addition, three fan parks for freestyle, and no hint of boredom.

The advantages of family vacations are obvious: there are numerous training areas for children and many facilities with professional supervision for the smallest guests of the resort. Experienced skiers looking for adventure choose the black slopes starting from the top of Horalpe. The height difference on black tracks is no exaggeration, believe it or not, 80%.

How to get to Wilder Kaiser-Brixenthal from Munich

The Wilder Kaiser-Brixental ski resort is the largest in Austria. Only about a hundred lifts. The resort is comfortable and moderately priced, in 2013 Wilder Kaiser was chosen as the best value ski resort in Austria. Heard various reviews about it, mostly positive, but it’s better to see it once than … In a word, early Saturday morning our car was speeding along the figure eight from Munich towards the Austrian border. Having bought a vignette at the gas station, then on the Autobahn to Kufstein and on to Wörgl, we drove like on autopilot. There we left on the E641 in the direction of Brixental / Brixen im Tahle and moved to the place using the navigator. Around 10 o’clock in the morning they were there.

Alpine skiing

Although SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixenthal is the largest ski resort in terms of area, the peaks here are not as high and steep as, for example, Sölden. The skiing area is within 2000 meters, the tracks are mainly blue and red. But here, even in cool weather, it is more comfortable to ride than at other resorts, the temperature is always a little higher than at three thousand. In terms of beauty, the mountain landscapes have almost no equal in Austria.

The entire infrastructure of the resort is so well thought out, there are many lifts, and with comfortable comfortable chairs, both closed and free-standing. The lift ticket cost EUR 45 per person per day. For those who like to ride with the breeze, 8 rapid descents are offered. Then there are 3 tracks, where you can check the time you will go down. But that’s not all. For those who want to look at themselves from the outside, there is even one track with a video recording. There is also a track for night skiing.

Service and Après-Ski

In Brixeny, tourist service is organized at a high-quality level, there is everything necessary for normal leisure and skiing. As everywhere in resorts of this level, there is a ski school, including for children. For lovers there are toboggan runs and cross-country skiing.

Après-Ski at the resort is generally typical, there are many restaurants and spa centers, but the degree of night parties, according to rumors, does not go overboard here. But you can have a very high-quality dinner in the restaurant, delicious Tyrolean cuisine with dumplings and schnitzels. Everything goes well with a glass of mulled wine. In general, we can say that after good, non-stressful skiing, you get quite comfortable leisure time, it is not for nothing that this resort is occupied mainly by respectable Germans and Dutch.

For those who prefer active recreation: a complex with indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and saunas, ice skating, squash, a bowling alley, curling, paragliding, equipped trails for winter walks and trekking, toboggan runs (3 km long in Zelle , in Brixen 2 tracks with a total length of 3 km). In Ellmau, the “Kaiserbad” sports and wellness complex is available to resort guests. Every Thursday in Elmau, “ski night” is held – this is skiing by the light of torches, performances of folk groups and a sea of mulled wine. In Itera, vacationers can admire the ancient castle and church. In Westendorf, you can take a tandem paragliding flight with an instructor. In Going, Itera, Zelle and Scheffau, tobogganing is allowed at night.
