We spent almost three weeks in Krabi in Thailand and took it easy. We rented a nice apartment in Ao Nang, only about a five-minute scooter ride from the beach. There were also night markets, restaurants, and supermarkets in the area. Since our apartment was part of a hotel complex, we were able to use the pool and gym—what more could you want? We spent most of our time working or exploring the area on our scooters. But now it was time for some action! A hike to the viewpoint and the Railay Beach Lagoon was on the agenda!

Arrival at Railay Beach in Thailand

Off to Railay Beach

Marco had read about a Railway Beach viewpoint in a report, so we set off. We drove to Ao Nang Beach and took the next longtail boat to Railay Beach (100 baht per person per trip). After about 10 minutes, we reached the beach between the high rocks and cliffs. Despite the many boats and people, Railay Beach is quite beautiful. The backdrop with the rugged cliffs is absolutely fascinating and unique! Add to that the green palm trees and the crystal-clear water… It was something special! We lay on the beach for about 30 minutes and refreshed ourselves in the sea. Then it was finally time to get started…

A few meters further on, we found ourselves in front of a sort of “climbing wall.” It led steeply upwards, and there was no end in sight. We didn’t yet realize that this would be THE trail; we actually thought it was a relaxed path.

In flip-flops to the Railway Beach Viewpoint Trail

We looked down at our legs, saw our flip-flops, looked at each other again, and smiled. We both knew they wouldn’t be the best “shoes” for climbing, but at that moment, we didn’t care. We asked returning climbers whether the trail was doable with such shoes. “Everything is possible!” was the reply.

THAT’S what we wanted to hear. Finally, some action again. We slowly made our way over the first few meters, climbing higher and higher. Here and there, a few ropes hung to pull ourselves up. Even though it was a bit slippery, it wasn’t really dangerous… You just have to be patient and careful.

After about 20 minutes, we arrived at the top, completely dirty and sweaty. We made it!! We were happy because we had overcome a few more hurdles. It felt incredibly good. At the top, we saw two signs: View Point and Lagoon. “A lagoon? How cool!” But we first turned left to the viewpoint and snapped a few pictures.

On the way back, we asked someone about the lagoon. He looked at our shoes and said the path was really tough and definitely not doable in those shoes! On top of that, we were running out of time, as the last boat back from Railay Beach was leaving at 6 p.m. We decided to head back and find out more about the lagoon at home. At home, we researched the lagoon. We found lots of pictures and information about it. Marco spontaneously decided: “Let’s go there again tomorrow. But earlier and with sneakers!” Said! Done!

Off to Railay Beach Lagoon

The next day, we drove back to Railay Beach and headed straight for the trail. Again, we passed the monkeys and again, we had to climb the steep wall. Once we got to the top, we turned right this time, and from there, the path began a steep descent. It was quiet, and very few people wandered here.

Marco enjoyed climbing and was always looking for a new adventure. By now, he’d even taken off his shoes, as he felt they gave him a better feeling while climbing. Ahhh yes… As I read this, I remember the man who said the day before that you couldn’t do the trail in flip-flops. Haha, okay, then just go without shoes! We were particularly impressed by the impressive flora. Suddenly, we were standing directly in front of a huge tree. It was incredibly tall, and you could almost hide in the trunk. To this day, we don’t know the name of this tree, but maybe you can help us.

We climbed as hard as we could. Abseiling, jumping down, pulling ourselves up, climbing up – it went on for about an hour. On the way to Railay Beach Lagoon, I was really scared at some points because it was a steep 5-6 meter drop! And without any safety equipment! Marco kept encouraging me: “You can do it! Slow down! Put your left foot in the crack now!” He always manages to convince me of certain things. His fire and passion are always contagious. And that’s a good thing! Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have made my first dive today.

Here and there, we met other young people. We exchanged ideas and cheered each other on. The path was certainly not easy and not for the faint of heart. Many hesitated at some points, but everyone else immediately supported us. So, everyone made it to the bottom safely.

And what we saw below was truly amazing. The scenery was breathtaking. A lagoon! Just like that, between the steep rock walls! Above, the clearing, and in the sky, a few birds circling through the air. Sometimes you really couldn’t hear anything—nothing at all! It was so quiet and empty. And then there were these overgrown plants. This silence. There was something mystical about this place.

Marco discovered a crevice on the right through which we could continue hiking around the Railay Beach Lagoon. We sat down for a while on the opposite side, ate some cookies, enjoyed the moment, and were simply content.

A little later, we got ready to head back down. The way up was easier; you knew the path, you could see where you were stepping, and you knew what to expect. A little dirty and sweaty, but overjoyed, we finally reached Railay Beach again. We treated ourselves to something to eat on Walking Street and took a longtail boat back to Aonang Beach.

The sun slowly set and the sky once again took on the most beautiful colors. We were simply incredibly happy and hugged each other. We were proud of ourselves and of this day. Once again we discovered a wonderful side of Thailand – the diverse nature in this beautiful country.
