Our tour through Slovakia was beautiful, exciting, adventurous, and incredibly relaxing. Every day we were outdoors in nature, enjoyed the time to the fullest, and cleared our heads. The time away from the laptop is very valuable to us, as we can recharge our batteries and find inspiration during these breaks. But now let’s get to the real topic: How expensive is it in Slovakia? We kept a record and noted every expense. In the following article, you’ll learn everything about the costs in Slovakia and what our entire tour actually cost in the end. Enjoy browsing!

Travel and departure costs in Slovakia

The travel costs depend on many factors. Are you traveling by plane, car, or train? When and where do you book your tickets? We can only tell you about our experiences. The trip to Slovakia was relatively spontaneous, so we booked our train tickets quite late. We recommend traveling by bus or train. For such distances, you really don’t need to get on a plane.

From Rostock, we took the train to Berlin. Here, we changed to the ICE train to Vienna. From Vienna, we just had to catch the train to Bratislava. That day, we were on the road for just under 12 hours; everything went smoothly. We booked the tickets on the Deutsche Bahn website and paid only €69.90 per person.

On the way back, we took the Eurocity from Bratislava to Berlin (9 hours). In Berlin, we then took the Flixbus* to Rostock. We were on the road for almost 14 hours that day. But here, too, everything went smoothly. We paid €39 per person for the train tickets and €12 per person for the bus tickets. You can find out more about travel in our Slovakia guide (coming soon…). In total, we paid €120.90 per person for the arrival and departure.

Accommodation Expenses

Slovakia is not an ultra-cheap travel destination, like Albania, for example. You can compare the prices with those in Germany. During our tour, we always booked our accommodations spontaneously the evening before. This gave us flexibility and allowed us to base our plans somewhat on the weather. We started in Bratislava and then traveled clockwise through the country. For 11 nights, we ended up paying 193€ per person, an average of just 17.50€ per night.

Costs for rental car and gasoline

We had a rental car for our entire time in Slovakia. As always, we booked it through www.billiger-mietwagen.de*. We have been completely satisfied with this platform for many years and have never had any problems. Booking is always quick and uncomplicated. Furthermore, we are always well protected with the services. We paid €146.46 for the rental car (Skoda Fabia) for 9 full days, or €73.23 per person. We picked it up and returned it at Bratislava Airport.

And of course, we also had to pay for the gasoline. Currently, a liter of gasoline costs around €1.35 in Slovakia. There are small price differences depending on the gas station. We refueled for around €110 for the period (€55 per person). So, the car and fuel cost us a total of €256.46. Since there were two of us traveling, we could, of course, share these expenses. Parking cost an additional €7.50 per person. So, our total is €135.73 per person.

Sightseeing & Activities Spending

Slovakia offers an incredible number of great highlights. Whether it’s taking the cable car to the peaks in the national parks, an interesting ice cave tour, or admission tickets to museums or castles. In the end, it all adds up. But for us, it was completely within budget. That was also because we hiked a lot in the national parks and didn’t use the train or lift. Tickets to the peaks are very expensive, but the prices are the same as everywhere else. In total, we only spent €57.50 per person in this category.

  • Malá Fatra cable car – 11.50€ per person
  • Beckov Castle – 4€ per person
  • Ice Cave of Dobšiná – 13€ per person
  • Entrance to Suchá Belá Park – 1.50€ per person
  • Mining Museum – 1€ per person
  • Lower Tatras cable car – 19€ per Person
  • UFO Bratislava – €7.50 per person Peron

Food & Drink Expenses

As often as possible, we cooked and self-catered. This is simply because we’re always too lazy to go out to a restaurant after a long day. Hardly a day went by without us shopping at Lidl (prices like in Germany). But we always grabbed something to eat or drink from somewhere. In the end, we spent €246.94 on restaurants, shopping, snacks, etc. Per person, we’re talking about €123.47. Per day and per person, we spent €10.28 on food and drink.

Slovakia Costs: Shopping & Other

We’re not generally big shoppers. During our trip through Slovakia, we only bought a magnet, sunglasses for Marco, and a hiking map for the Slovak Paradise National Park. In total, we only spent around €20, or just €10 per person.

Total Expenses for Slovakia

What a fantastic trip. Every single cent was worth it! As we said at the beginning, Slovakia isn’t exactly a cheap travel destination. But that’s also because the country has a very good infrastructure and everything is very modern. For a 12-day tour through Slovakia, we ended up spending around 583€ per person (around 49€ per day).

That’s quite “expensive” compared to other trips, but in the end, we didn’t lack for anything. If you look at the online tour offers, a 12-day guided tour often costs over €1,200 per person. So, in the end, it’s a bargain if you put together your own trip. We highly recommend a trip through Slovakia; the nature is spectacular, and the people are incredibly friendly and helpful.
