What a fantastic tour through Belize! We spent 14 days in this beautiful country. We were on Caye Caulker, on the dream islands Silk Cayes, in Hopkins, Placencia, San Ignacio, and at the legendary Lamanai Ruins. So we saw as many highlights in Belize as we could. We’re currently sitting back in our apartment in Rostock, processing the last two weeks. It felt like we hadn’t been home for an eternity.

This is probably also because we experienced so much during this time. For both of us, it was the first trip to Central America. But we don’t want to keep you in suspense any longer and would like to present you with our cost overview. Perhaps you’re wondering how much the costs are in Belize? How expensive are the food, the tours, and the accommodations? In the following article, we’ll show you how much our costs for Belize were. Have fun browsing and, of course, try them out.

What else you should know:

Costs for Belize – Overview

1. Flights to Belize

Generally, the costs for traveling to Belize are quite high. Prices on Skyscanner and other sites usually range from €645 to €800 upwards (with at least one stopover). The connections aren’t the best, and the journey takes quite a while. We booked a great deal last year.

We flew with Air Canada from Amsterdam to Toronto and then on to Belize the next day. For the round-trip flight, we paid an incredible €255 per person, including meals, entertainment, seat reservation, and baggage. That’s pretty crazy and not exactly common. You should budget for €500-600. Or set up a price alert on Skyscanner and wait for a bargain!

Of course, deals like these are extremely rare, but we were lucky and were in the right place at the right time—online. We found the stopover in Toronto very pleasant. The journey was generally quite stress-free, as we were well-rested and alert the next morning, ready for the 5-hour flight to Belize. We can also highly recommend Air Canada; a fantastic airline with excellent onboard service.

2. Accommodation Costs

We booked our accommodations in advance this time, as our route was fairly fixed. There wasn’t much choice online, so we booked early to be on the safe side. We stayed mostly in simple guesthouses, which we booked via Booking.com, Hostelworld, and Airbnb.

With a budget of €20-40 per night, you can expect fairly basic room amenities. That was sufficient for us, since we travel quite a bit. We spent a total of €435.70, or €31 per night for both of us. This also reflects the price level very well. Belize is quite expensive compared to many other countries.

Costs of Belize Accommodations

In some places, we didn’t have much choice. For example, in San Ignacio and Orange Walk Town, you can’t find many reasonably affordable and good accommodations online. And in Hopkins, there aren’t many options unless you want to spend a ton of money. Disclosure: Thanks to our available Airbnb credit, we only ended up paying €144 for our accommodations.

  • San Ignacio: J&R Guesthouse* (€15 per night)
  • Placencia: Airbnb SeaSpray Hotel* (€34 per night)
  • Caye Caulker: Sophie’s Guesthouse* (€27 per night)
  • Hopkins: Airbnb Seafish (right on the ocean)* (€52 per night)
  • Orange Walk Town: Ricky’s Apartment* (€16 per night)

3. Food and Drink

Like many other countries, you can find inexpensive street food in Belize. Typical for this country are Mexican dishes such as burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, as well as fry jacks, pizza, and burgers. Belize isn’t necessarily one of our top destinations when it comes to food; we found our diet quite monotonous over the two weeks. You really end up finding the same dishes in the various restaurants and smaller kitchens.

But no one really has to starve here. Prices in the supermarket are a bit more expensive than in Germany. A stick of butter costs around €3.50, milk €1, cornflakes €2, jam €2.50, pasta €1.50, cream cheese €1.75, or a packet of tea €2. Rice, meat, bananas, beans, and even pineapples are, of course, quite inexpensive in Belize.

Belize Costs Food and Drink Restaurant

We rarely cooked our own meals, as we only had a kitchen in our accommodation once. So we spent most of our time eating out. A latte costs €3.25, a couple of mini donuts €2.75, a bagel with cream cheese €3.20, and toast with butter, egg, and bacon costs the equivalent of €6. Off the main roads, you can get a small pizza for €6 and quesadillas for only €4. Unfortunately, the selection for vegans and vegetarians is never particularly extensive. In the end, we spent a total of €339 on food and drink. That’s only €24 per day for two people.

4. Transportation within the Country

As usual, we traveled the country as backpackers. Since we only had 14 days, we wanted to visit a few places and not just stay in one place. We traveled by boat, taxi, and bus. Bus rides in Belize are really cheap, so we didn’t spend that much money. We traveled 756 kilometers by bus in 14 days. Crazy, right? And that’s despite Belize being a really small country.

The most expensive part is the taxi ride to and from the airport. Since there’s unfortunately no other option, you have to take a taxi and pay the fixed price of 25 Belize dollars per person each way (€10). So we paid €40 for this transfer alone. All other bus rides cost us between €1 and €5, depending on the route. The ferry from Belize City to Caye Caulker cost €23.50 per person (round trip). Tip: Tickets are cheaper on Caye Caulker directly. So get your return ticket (7€) on the island first!

5. Excursions and Tours

There are, of course, many adventures to be had in Belize, so we went on many tours and excursions. At first, the tours seem quite expensive. In the end, however, we were extremely satisfied after almost every tour and found the price completely reasonable. Only the Crystal Cave tour in San Ignacio seemed quite overpriced, even though the tour itself wasn’t bad.

Our full-day snorkeling tours (e.g., to the Silk Cayes or to the Lamanai Ruins) were relatively inexpensive. There’s definitely a lot to do in Belize if you have a big enough budget. In the end, we spent the most money in this category, a whopping €245 per person. But in the end, it was absolutely worth it.

Costs of Belize Tours and Excursions

  • Full-day sailing tour for snorkeling from Caye Caulker = €56 pp
  • Excursion to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins = €36 pp
  • Tour of the Crystal Cave in San Ignacio = €77 pp
  • Visit to an iguana center in San Ignacio = €7.30 pp
  • Full-day snorkeling trip to the Silk Cayes = €60 pp
  • 4 hours of golf Cart in Placencia = €6 pp

6. Other Costs

As always, there are a few expenses that we put in the “Other” category. These include things like laundry, tips, buying after-sun lotion, and buying souvenirs. Here, however, we only spent €30. You can have laundry done in Belize for €3 to €4. We had an incredibly nice hostess in San Ignacio who even cleaned our laundry for free.

Sunscreen can easily cost €8 in Belize, and a small bottle of mosquito repellent costs a whopping €4. Luckily, we bought a large bottle of sunscreen at home for just €2. We knew from previous trips that such products are usually very expensive abroad.

7. Our Belize Costs for 14 Days

Now you’ve seen all of our cost points and have a first overview of the price level in the country. Belize is quite expensive compared to other countries, so you should definitely consider this before your trip. Mexico is right next door and is considerably cheaper (according to our friends). In total, we spent €1,645.84 on the two-week Belize tour, or only around €822.92 per person. If you don’t have Airbnb credit and can’t find a flight deal, you’ll need to budget €600 to €700 more per person.

Our costs are definitely impressive, considering that flights to Belize alone usually cost around €700 or more. So, minus the flights, we only needed around €40 per person per day, including everything. For these €823, we had an unforgettable trip with unique adventures and experiences.
