Cape Town – one of our absolute favorite cities in South Africa. This isn’t just because you have the mountains and the sea right at your fingertips. Rather, it’s the city’s very own flair. Cape Town is colorful, hip, cool, and somehow so easy-going. Before our Northern Cape round trip began, we had some time to enjoy Cape Town.

My birthday was just around the corner, and Marco thought of surprising me with a helicopter flight over Cape Town. And he truly succeeded. “If it’s your favorite city, then you should see it from a bird’s eye view.” Today we have our review for you, with all the information about the provider and the prices. Enjoy browsing!

Provider: Cape Town Helicopters

Marco booked our helicopter sightseeing flight online with Cape Town Helicopters*. This provider even receives 5 out of 5 points on Tripadvisor from 1,774 reviews. Cape Town Helicopters offers six different flight routes, priced between €123 and €499. Marco opted for the “Atlantico Scenic Flight” tour. This 20-minute flight cost around €155 per person at the time (€190 today). We flew in a Robinson R44 helicopter, where one person could sit in the front next to the pilot and two more in the back.

Our Helicopter Sightseeing Flight over Cape Town

We departed from the heliport at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. We arrived half an hour before departure and had to fill out a form. Afterwards, we were shown a safety video on a monitor and then we were led to the helicopter. We looked left, looked right, and realized that no one else was flying with us. So, we were able to experience and enjoy this adventure in complete privacy.

Then it started! We climbed in, put on our headphones, buckled up, and off we went. The propellers got faster and faster, and suddenly we lifted off and were in the air. It’s such a strange but wonderful feeling to be able to see the world from above.

We had our first flight a few months earlier on our trip along the Panorama Route in South Africa. We flew with a pilot for around 25 minutes over the highlights of the route. It was simply amazing, but unfortunately, it went by far too quickly!

Our route

The tour took us along the coast, past Table Mountain, Lions Head, Cape Town Stadium, the four beaches of Clifton, Camps Bay, and the 12 Apostles (all outdoor highlights here). The weather was perfect, with blue skies and sunshine. Not a single cloud was in sight, and it wasn’t particularly windy. This allowed us to enjoy the flight to the fullest.

We kept looking at each other, grinning, and expressing how happy we were at that moment. For us, such adventures aren’t something we take for granted; they’re unique experiences we’ll probably never forget.

The view from the helicopter was breathtakingly beautiful in this weather. The pilot told us a lot about his job, his tours, and the highlights we flew past. Cape Town seems so small from a bird’s eye view, but it’s actually quite large.

Especially when you consider all the suburbs. We kept pointing at places we recognized. “Look there! Remember? We were lying on the beach there once!” And as quickly as we were in the helicopter, the flight was over.

Conclusion of the helicopter sightseeing flight

This was by far one of the most beautiful experiences in Cape Town. We highly recommend the provider, crew, and pilot. The process was seamless, and everything on site was also very quick. Cape Town is generally incredibly diverse and varied, but a sightseeing flight like this completes the package.

We highly recommend this adventure and 100%. If you ever travel to Cape Town, treat yourself to a scenic flight like this. It’s truly worth it!

Other Providers & Prices

There are several other providers for helicopter scenic flights. In the following table, we have selected a few providers for you and researched the prices for these flights. Many offer so-called hopper tours, which last 12 minutes. You’ll fly along the coast to Camps Bay and back. These flights start at €116 per person.

But be careful: If you google, you’ll find various providers, many of which belong together. For example, “Waterfront Helicopter Tours,” “Sport Helicopter Rides,” and “The Huey Helicopters” belong together. We found our 20-minute flight with “Cape Town Helicopters” fantastic and could have stayed in the air for hours.
