The picturesque Montafon region

This summer, we were able to explore several regions in Austria, including the Montafon in Vorarlberg. This approximately 39-kilometer-long valley stretches from the Bielerhöhe to Bludenz and is bordered by the mighty mountain ranges of the Rätikon, the Verwall, and the Silvretta. There are plenty of mountains in the Montafon; the highest even measures 3,312 meters (Piz Buin). Great starting points for a mountain summer in the Montafon include the communities of Gaschurn, Schruns, Bartholomäberg, Silbertal, St. Gallenkirch, Tschagguns, Vandans, and St. Anton im Montafon.

The 4-star Hotel Verwall in Gaschurn

We stayed in the small community of Gaschurn in the beautiful 4* Hotel Verwall. This wellness and hiking hotel was named after the Verwall Mountains, which tower into the sky here in the Montafon. While the hotel may appear somewhat inconspicuous from the outside, numerous great highlights lie hidden behind the facade. The hotel is in a prime location, as the hiking and cycling trails start right outside the front door. The surrounding mountain railways are also not far away by car. It’s just 3 minutes to the Versettla cable car, 5 minutes to the Garfrescha cable car, and 7 minutes to the Valisera cable car valley station.

Upon our arrival, we received a very warm welcome from “Mrs. Inge” and were treated to a delicious welcome drink. She gave us some information about the program for the next few days and the hotel itself, beaming with joy. We immediately noticed that the staff is generally super friendly, welcoming, and open-minded, and we felt very welcome. The reception team can help you plan your tour and will be happy to give you some great tips. Book your room here.

Our beautiful feel-good room

Ready for our room? Well then, let’s go! After a short tour of the hotel, we were able to make ourselves comfortable in the chic and modern Itons comfort double room. The almost 40 m² room awaited us with a large and comfortable bed, a really cool cozy corner with a view of nature, plenty of storage space in the hallway, a separate toilet, a bathroom with a rain shower, bathtub and a huge sink, as well as a TV, Wi-Fi, safe, desk and even a balcony.

We felt very comfortable from the very beginning in our modern and high-quality room. We especially liked the balcony with its view of the greenery and the huge cozy corner in front of the window, where we always enjoyed relaxing in the evenings. We didn’t have to worry about towels and bathrobes either; everything was already waiting for us upon check-in. Incidentally, there is also an extra bed for up to two children in this room, and dogs are also allowed for an additional charge of €16 per day. In our Instagram highlight “Hotel Verwall” you can watch the entire trip again and also find a video of our room.

Indoor pool & sun terrace with garden

The absolute highlight of the hotel for us is definitely the very modern “alpinaVital SPA” wellness area with its numerous highlights. But we’ll come to that later; let’s first talk about the indoor pool, which, with a water temperature of 29°C, invites you to swim and relax. The bright blue pool is a real eye-catcher and will revive tired muscles. There are comfortable seating areas by the poolside, as well as loungers in the green garden with a sun terrace.

Wellness & Fitness in the alpinaVital SPA

Enough bathing? Then head to the beautiful alpinaVital SPA with its sauna, fitness room, and treatment area. As soon as we entered, we were struck by the modern design, the great lighting concept, the clean lines, and the warm colors. Highlights of the wellness area are definitely the cool hanging chairs and comfortable loungers, as well as the waterbeds. Here, everyone can find their own retreat and unwind while soft music plays from the speakers to help them drift off. The tea and vitamin bar offers free water, tea, bars, and fruit.

The modern sauna area also leaves nothing to be desired. Whether it’s the Finnish panoramic sauna (90 °C), the organic herbal sauna (70 °C), the sauna garden with loungers, the infrared cabin (45 °C), or the steam bath – there’s something for everyone. Those who need to cool down afterwards can visit the cold air grotto or get some fresh air in the sauna garden. We also really liked the dark room with its comfortable waterbeds, where you can truly unwind, both mentally and physically. By the way, right behind the indoor pool there is also a family area with a bio sauna and relaxation room.

Wellness treatments at the Hotel Verwall in Montafon

And as if all that wasn’t relaxing enough, Marco and I also had a 60-minute full-body massage, which we desperately needed after our mountain adventures. You can choose from a wide variety of wellness treatments, whether massages or cosmetic treatments. We opted for the vitalizing “Rosalpina full-body massage” with alpine rose, arnica, and evening primrose oil, which was truly very pleasant and soothing. The trained staff knew exactly which areas to press and massage. You can find more information about the treatments here: Wellness packages.

Active program at the hotel

Do you also like to be active during your vacation and enjoy doing a bit of sport? We love the mix of exercise and relaxation and therefore thought it was really great that the hotel also offered various activities and that we could use the fitness area. At the Hotel Verwall, you can participate in guided tours every week for free and also choose cool activities from the diverse BergePLUS program, which are also free of charge. You only have to pay an extra charge for “premium activities.” Here you will find, among other things, climbing tours, hikes, bike tours, yoga sessions, and much, much more. How about a llama trek through the mountains or a leisurely hike to the Vergalda Alp?

Pampering board at the Hotel Verwall

We are big fans of starting the day comfortably with a hearty breakfast. At the Hotel Verwall, a rich, vital breakfast buffet (7 to 10 a.m.) with fresh, regional products awaited us. Particularly noteworthy are the large selection of breads, the freshly prepared egg dishes, and the organic vitamin corner and juice bar. In the afternoon, the hotel invites you to an afternoon snack (3 p.m. to 5 p.m.) with fresh salads, delicious cakes, creamy soups, and other small delicacies. And have we even mentioned how friendly, open-minded, and welcoming the entire hotel service staff is?

The highlight of the day for us was the dinner (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) with a varied six-course menu to choose from daily. The kitchen team, led by Head Chef Kai Horitzky, put in incredible effort every evening, and with every course, we sensed the entire team’s attention to detail and willingness to experiment. Sometimes there were traditional delicacies, sometimes Mediterranean dishes, as well as vegetarian and healthy options. Each course was also presented with incredible style, featuring wonderful little details. A feast for the eyes was definitely a treat.

Activities in the area

Of course, in addition to the excellent food and relaxation, our activity program wasn’t neglected either. There’s so much to discover in the Montafon; you could probably do something new 365 days a year. The staff can give you lots of tips and suggest precise routes on the hiking map. In the following list, we’ve noted some great spots that we highly recommend. By the way, we stayed in the region for 5 more nights after our hotel stay and therefore experienced quite a lot.

  • Drive through the Paznaun and Ganifatal valleys
  • Silvretta reservoir, Vermunt reservoir, Kopssee with dam wall
