Bormio is a two-in-one resort. On the one hand, the town is famous for its opportunities for skating, it was not for nothing that various sports championships were held here. On the other hand, there are 9 thermal springs on the territory of the city, which gives unlimited opportunities for relaxation and rest in local spas and thermal complexes. Bormio is a self-sufficient resort and quite far from the big cities of Northern Italy.
Bormio is actually located on the border with Switzerland and is part of the Alta Valtellina ski region. Bormio’s home skiing area is limited to 50 km, but with the Alta Valtellina ski pass, the possibilities for skiing are greatly expanded.
The ski center is located at an altitude of 1,100 m. Bormio is famous for the location of one of the steepest altitude differences in Italy – 1,792 m. This descent can be completed without additional stops for transitions, choosing a route that is suitable for you in terms of difficulty. Fast and uninterrupted ascent is provided by 30 different lifts, there are special routes for teaching children.
Twice a week, it is possible to go down the ski slopes at night. The total length of the tracks is 110 km, of which black tracks occupy 12 km, red tracks – 64 km, and blue tracks – 34 km.

Climate
In winter, the average daytime temperature does not fall below -6°C, and the lowest values range from -13-15°C. Such weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Bormio is famous for its long ski season, from December to April, although the slopes are already covered with snow in November.
January is considered the coldest month, but thanks to the moderate humidity, frosts are tolerated quite easily in this area.
Bormio is also not hot in the summer, which allows you to do active sports all year round. At a height where the snow almost never falls, you can go skiing or snowboarding.
How to get to the resort
This area does not have its own airport or railway station, so the entire road passes with transfers.
There are several ways to get to the resort region:
- On the plane . The flight is carried out to one of the international airports of Milan and Bergamo. You can get further from the airport by taxi or bus. During the active season, transportation is carried out by the shuttle company MT Bus.
- On the bus . This method is the simplest, but depends on the current weather conditions. During heavy snowfall, some roads may be closed for safety reasons. The following passes operate all year round: Bernina Pass, Livigno tunnel, Umbrail, Forcola.
- On the train . Tirano railway station is located 30 km from Bormio. There are 2 ways to get to the resort: from Switzerland by train on the route Sant Moritz – Tirano – Sant Moritz, from Italy by train on the route Milan – Tirano – Milan. You can get to the resort area from the railway station by bus or taxi.
- A more comfortable option to get to Bormio is to use the services of an individual transfer. This type of movement is especially relevant for those who transport ski equipment or arrive at night when other transport is closed. The height difference is quite significant and amounts to one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two meters. The right side of the slope is represented by a number of tracks that are considered extreme and exciting. However, lighter types of tracks, which are ideal for skiers of initial and intermediate levels of training, prevail in this area.
- Le Motta – Oga – Valdidentro is a short distance from Bormio. The tracks here are quite diverse, among which skiers of initial and advanced levels of training will be able to find a suitable option for themselves. Real professionals will be able to appreciate the descent along the long 3.2 km Doss-Alt track.
- Santa – Caterina – Valfurva , located on the slope of Cresta Sobretta mountain. This area is famous for its active use for various international level competitions. Starting from the very top, there are high-class slopes on different sides, which advanced skiers will appreciate. However, mainly there are slopes for intermediate level skiers: Ginepri, as well as the longest Del Alpe track. Snowboarding is also possible on specially equipped slopes.
