The Andermatt ski resort is located on the northern slope of the St. Gotthard pass in Central Switzerland, not far from St. Moritz and Zermatt . The skiing region consists of four parts : Hemcktok, Netschen, Winterhorn, Rielp .
Its main advantages are excellent transport connections with all regions of the country and Europe (the village lies at the intersection of several highways and railways) combined with an interesting terrain. Several mountain ranges rise up around the resort – Gems-Stock (2,961 m) in the south, Rosboden-Stock (2,835 m) in the east, Stockli (2,489 m) in the northeast and Spitzberg (2,934 m, as well as the side peak of Mütterlishorn (3,058 m) in the northwest.As a result, a huge variety of conditions for recreation is formed, especially taking into account the numerous, albeit small, glaciers, as well as beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys.
Andermatt became a resort only at the end of the 19th century, when luxury hotels began to sprout in the village. Many of them still receive guests. A ski lift appeared here in 1937, it became the second in Switzerland. Today, Andermatt’s home skiing region consists of four parts: Gemsstock, Notschen, Winterhorn, Rialp. The tracks are more suitable for experienced riders, but the resort has all the conditions for beginners. A ski school works for them. For fans of cross-country skiing – 20 km of picturesque tracks at an altitude of 1447 m.
Andermatt has recently merged with neighboring Zedrun into Switzerland’s largest skiing area. The project includes the construction of five new lifts and the replacement of eight existing ones, thus bringing the total number to 24.
Historical reference
Once Andermatt was an ordinary mountain village, famous only for the crossing of Suvorov through the Alps. But then the Egyptian billionaire Sami Sawiris came, he saw here a chance to turn a quiet province into the largest tourist resort in Switzerland and … he almost won!
In recent years, a number of construction and development projects have indeed changed the landscape of Andermatt and its surroundings almost beyond recognition, not to mention people’s lives. A creative duo of Swiss photographers documented the strange transformation of a once remote region of Switzerland.
The new mega-resort was originally conceived in the format of a project that had to be different from other alpine resort regions in literally everything. More luxury? Yes, as much as possible! And now at least six hotels of the highest class are being built here! Luxury housing for businessmen from Milan and Zurich? Certainly! And now those who wish are offered a choice of almost five hundred apartments, to which is added almost its own Palace of Congresses with an indoor swimming pool.
How to get there
The resort is located in central Switzerland. The nearest international airport is Zurich (140 km). There are trains from there to Andermatt. On one of them you need to get to the Zürich Hauptbahnhof train station, where you can change to a train going to the Geschenen stop, then change again to the famous Glacier Express. The train to Andermatt moves slowly through the winding road. Railway connections are also established with other cities: you can get here by train from Lucerne, Bruno, Davos, Laaks, Ispa.
Ski holiday
The skiing region consists of four parts: Gemsstock, Winterhorn (2,460 m) and Realp (1,536 m) are located in the south, as well as the north-eastern region of Nechen – Gooch (3,244 – 1,842 m), to which the young region is often added skiing Kalmutier – Val, or simply Oberalppass, which lies to the east, beyond the Oberalppass, as well as the surrounding areas of Hospental, Geschenen, Wassen and Gurtnellen.
In total, there are about 23 marked tracks with a total length of 125 km (50 km “blue”, 42 km “red” and 33 km “black”). A characteristic feature of the local slopes is the alternation of long and relatively narrow tracks of the upper sections with very wide “clearings” of the lower slopes, as well as their northern orientation (only the Nechen-Guch area is oriented to the southwest), which allows maintaining a good snow cover at any time season In general, the descents are short (maximum – 4 km), and the height difference is small (up to 800 m), but the interesting and varied terrain significantly increases their attractiveness. In addition, there are the widest opportunities for freeriding – almost all mountain ranges around Andermatt are perfect for this type of recreation, but Gurshengrat (2260 m) and Winterhorn (2660 m) are especially popular.
The slopes are serviced by 13 lifts (6 rope lifts) plus another 6 in the Oberalp area. There is a fan park with two half-pipes (one of them is considered the highest in the country – 2015 meters above sea level), a bordercross area, a toboggan run (height difference – 398 m), about 28 km of snowshoe trails and approx. the same amount of cross-country skiing, an ice skating rink, an indoor swimming pool, more than 70 km of hiking trails (35 km – winter), mountaineering and ice climbing schools. There are equipment rentals, several mountain ski and snowboard schools, as well as the Avalanche Training Center at Gemsstock.
