Geographical location
Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean Ocean, east of Madagascar. Together with the islands of Reunion and Rodrigues, these islands belong to the Mascarene Islands. They are about 1,800 kilometers from the African continent. The Seychelles are located north of Mauritius, about 1,750 kilometers away.
Mauritius itself is not particularly large. From north to south it is about 70 kilometers, and from east to west just under 40 kilometers. The island is about the size of Hamburg or Munich. Your travel documents must be valid after the end of your trip. Children also need their own identification. The entry in your parents’ passport has been invalid since June 26, 2012. If you are flying from Mauritius to Rodrigues, you also need a valid passport or identity card.
The Best Time to Book Cheap Flights to Mauritius
One of the key factors when it comes to finding cheap flights to Mauritius is booking at the right time. Airfares fluctuate greatly and are influenced by various factors, such as the time of travel, flight availability, demand, and even special events or holidays.
1. When is the best time to book?
Generally speaking, the earlier you book, the better. However, there is an ideal period of time when the chances of finding cheap flights are particularly good. Studies show that the best airfares for international flights can usually be found between 4 and 6 months before the planned departure date.
For flights to Mauritius, it can therefore be worthwhile to monitor prices early and take advantage of an attractive offer. Some experts recommend booking Tuesdays or Wednesdays, as prices are often slightly cheaper on these days. However, there are no hard and fast rules, as prices vary dynamically.
2. Flexibility with travel dates
One of the most important strategies for finding cheap flights is flexibility with travel dates. Often, flights that don’t depart on weekends or during holiday periods are significantly cheaper. So, if you have the option to travel outside of peak season or book flights on weekdays, you can save considerably.
Use flight search engines like Skyscanner*, Momondo, or Google Flights to check for flexible travel dates. Many of these platforms offer calendar views or flexible date search functions that help you find the cheapest days for your flight to Mauritius.
3. Travel off-peak
Mauritius is a popular destination, and prices for flights and accommodation tend to be higher during the peak season (November to April). If you have the opportunity to travel during the low season (May to October), you will often find better deals. During this time, both airfares and hotel costs are generally lower, and the island is less crowded.
The month of September often offers an excellent combination of good weather and cheap airfares, so it’s worth keeping an eye on this period.
How to Find the Best Flight Deals
Nowadays, there are numerous online tools and resources that can help you find cheap flights to Mauritius. Here are some of the best strategies and platforms you can use:
1. Use Flight Search Engines
Flight search engines are one of the best methods for comparing different airlines and prices. Some of the most popular and reliable search engines are:
- Skyscanner: Skyscanner* is one of the most well-known search engines for cheap flights. It allows you to compare flights from different airlines and also offers the option of flexible dates and departure locations.
- Google Flights: Google Flights offers a user-friendly interface and allows you to find the cheapest days for your flight. You can also track the price trend over a specific period of time.
- Momondo: Momondo is another popular search engine that compares flight prices from different providers. It also offers a “price calendar” that lets you see which days the flights are cheapest.
These platforms search hundreds of airlines and travel portals to show you the best deals. It’s worth checking regularly for new deals, as prices often change daily.
2. Set up price alerts
A very useful feature on many flight search engines is the ability to set up price alerts. This means you’ll receive a notification as soon as the price of your chosen flight changes. This is a great way to catch the best time to book.
You can set up these alerts on platforms like Google Flights or Skyscanner. Simply enter your destination (in this case, Mauritius) and your desired travel dates, and activate the price alert. If the price drops, you will be notified immediately and can react quickly.
Which airlines fly to Mauritius?
Several airlines offer connections to Mauritius, both direct flights and connections with stopovers. The most popular airlines offering flights to Mauritius include:
- Air Mauritius: The national airline of Mauritius offers direct flights from many European cities, including Paris, London, and Frankfurt. Air Mauritius offers solid service and is often one of the best options for direct flights.
- Emirates: Emirates often offers cheap flights to Mauritius with a stopover in Dubai. The airline is known for its excellent service and modern aircraft.
- Turkish Airlines: Turkish Airlines flies to Mauritius with a stopover in Istanbul. This airline often offers good deals, and the onboard service is also very high quality.
- Condor: Condor offers seasonal direct flights from Frankfurt to Mauritius. The airline is known for its low prices, especially in economy class.
- Lufthansa: Lufthansa also offers connections to Mauritius, usually with a stopover in a European hub such as Frankfurt or Munich.
When choosing an airline, you should consider not only the price but also the flight times, the number of stopovers, and the onboard service. Sometimes it’s worth paying a little more to get a direct flight or a shorter travel time.
Direct Flights vs. Connections with Stopovers
If you want to fly to Mauritius, you usually have the choice between direct flights and flights with stopovers. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, which you should consider when booking.
1. Direct Flights
Direct flights are, of course, the most convenient and fastest way to get to Mauritius. They save you the stress of stopovers and offer the advantage of arriving directly at your destination. Air Mauritius and Condor are two of the airlines that offer direct flights from Europe to Mauritius.
Advantages of direct flights:
- Time savings: You arrive at your destination faster as there are no stopovers.
- Convenience: No hassle of changing planes or waiting for connecting flights.
- Lesser risk of delays: Since you only have one flight, the risk of being delayed due to connection problems is reduced.
Disadvantages of direct flights:
- Price: Direct flights are often more expensive than flights with stopovers. So if you want to save money, it may be worth considering flights with one or more stops.
2. Flights with Stopovers
Flights with stopovers are generally cheaper than direct flights, especially if you’re willing to accept a longer travel time. Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways often offer affordable connections to Mauritius with one or more stopovers.
Advantages of Flights with Stopovers:
- Cheap Price: Flights with stopovers are generally cheaper than direct flights. If you’re flexible and on a tight budget, stopovers can save you a lot of money.
- Flexibility: Depending on the airline and the stopover location, you can sometimes take the opportunity to visit an additional city along the way. We spent 3 days in Abu Dhabi.
Disadvantages of flights with layovers:
- Longer travel time: Flights with layovers can take significantly longer, especially if the layover is several hours (or days).
- More stress: Transferring flights can be stressful, especially at large airports, where you often have to travel long distances and may have little time.
Additional tips to save money when booking your flight Save
In addition to booking at the right time and choosing the right airline, there are a few other strategies for getting cheap flights to Mauritius:
1. Consider open-jaw flights
Sometimes it can be cheaper to book open-jaw flights, where you depart from or return to a different airport. For example, you could book your flight from Paris to Mauritius and fly back from Mauritius to Frankfurt. Such combinations can often lead to significant discounts.
2. Use miles and frequent flyer programs
If you are a member of a frequent flyer program or collect credit card points, you may be able to use airline miles for your flight to Mauritius. Many airlines offer frequent flyer programs where you can collect miles and redeem them for flights. It’s worth using these programs regularly to save on more expensive flights to Mauritius.
3. Look out for offers and special promotions
Many airlines regularly offer special promotions or flash deals. These offers are often time-limited and can offer significant savings. Sign up for newsletters from airlines or travel portals to be informed about such promotions.
You should also follow the many bargain blogs, such as Reiseuhu, Urlaubspiraten, Exbir, Flynous, or Fly4Free. These platforms are the fastest way to find out about bargain flights to Mauritius. Most platforms even offer a WhatsApp alert.
Cheap Flights to Mauritius – Conclusion
Booking a cheap flight to Mauritius can be very challenging, but with the right strategy and planning, it’s entirely possible to find a great deal. By choosing the best time to book, being flexible with your travel dates, and using flight search engines effectively, you can often save considerable money.
It’s worth checking flight prices regularly and using price alerts to avoid missing out on the best deals. Whether you prefer a direct flight or travel with a stopover ultimately depends on your budget and personal preferences. Mauritius is definitely worth a visit!
Airport Transfer
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport of Mauritius is located in the southeast of the island, not far from Mahebourg and Blue Bay. It’s about 35 kilometers to Port Louis. Many providers allow you to book a private transfer in advance (book transfer here*). Depending on your destination on the island, prices range from €10 to €60. There are also public buses, although these aren’t comparable to ours in Germany.
The “chicken buses” often don’t run according to a schedule and come whenever they want. Bus stops are usually only recognizable by a small (sometimes hidden) sign. You should allow at least two hours for the journey to Port Louis. The buses stop in every village and on every street. Bus 198 runs every 15 minutes from Port Louis to Mahebourg via the airport. You can find the timetable here. The rides are very affordable and often cost only between €1 and €5 (depending on the route).
Booking Accommodation in Mauritius
And finally, of course, you also need a suitable place to stay in Mauritius. On the island, you’ll find everything: low-budget accommodations, charming guesthouses, good hotels, or luxury resorts. You can even get a private room for as little as €15 a night. Even really nice 3- and 4-star hotels don’t cost a fortune.
However, you’ll need a lot of money for the island’s many world-class hotels. There are more than 100 5-star hotels, but these are truly a dream. Many treat themselves to at least one or two nights in one of these resorts. We’ve already reported on various accommodations: The most beautiful all-inclusive hotels in Mauritius.
