We love Fischland! As soon as we find the time and the weather cooperates, we usually head to our beloved Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. It was definitely love at first sight, but you certainly know that if you’ve been with us for a while. For us, the peninsula is by far one of the most beautiful and idyllic places in all of Germany!
Last time, we took a wonderful bike tour through Fischland, cycling from Ahrenshoop to Born am Darß, then on to Wiek am Darß, Prerow, and the Darß lighthouse and Weststrand. The tour back took us through the lush and beautiful Darß Primeval Forest. In today’s post, we’d like to introduce you to this tour in more detail and show you a few beautiful highlights. Enjoy browsing!

Our bike tour through Fischland
There are many great bike tours on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. But no matter which tour you ultimately choose, you certainly won’t regret it, because every corner of the peninsula has so much to offer. A bike is the best way to explore the peninsula in a relaxed manner. You can either bring your own bike or rent one locally.
This time, we started our bike tour through Fischland in the artists’ village of Ahrenshoop, which you definitely shouldn’t miss. From there, we cycled along the Bodden and stopped in Born and Wiek am Darß. Only then did we spontaneously decide to cycle to Prerow and further through the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Our destination was the Darß Lighthouse and the stunningly beautiful western beach.
- Length: just under 40 kilometers
- Duration: 2 hours
- Level of difficulty: fairly leisurely, without any major climbs
- Route: Ahrenshoop – Born – Wiek – Prerow – Weststrand – Urwald – Ahrenshoop

Start in the artists’ village of Ahrenshoop
For us, Ahrenshoop is the epitome of vacation. Within the first few meters, all tension and everyday stress are washed away. The artists’ village may be quite manageable, but we never find it boring, and we’re always discovering new details.
Before your tour, we recommend a leisurely stroll through the village, with stops at the Althagen harbor, the art museum and mill, the pretty church, and, of course, the beach. In our separate article, we reveal everything in detail: The artists’ village of Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea coast.
On the Baltic Sea Cycle Route
The route to Born am Darß starts directly at the Feldweg car park or from the Althagen harbor. You’ll quickly reach a paved cycle path that leads you along the Bodden to Born. Even from a distance, we spotted numerous kite surfers on the Bodden, taking advantage of the strong wind.
Just before reaching the town center of Born, you’ll pass the “Kitesurf & Kanu Born” kite school, where you can try out your kitesurfing skills. By the way, you are on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, which starts at the Danish border near Flensburg and takes you to Ahlbeck on the island of Usedom. Of the almost 1,140 km, 695 km run through our beautiful Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Coffee break in Born am Darß
What a pretty place! Born am Darß is at least as beautiful as Ahrenshoop, and that’s not just because of the many captain’s houses with thatched roofs and colorfully decorated Darß doors. In Born, you immediately sense an incredibly cozy atmosphere, while the birds chirp around you and, especially in summer, the many colorful flowers bloom.
The former fishing village invites you to stroll and awaits you with a small harbor, colorful houses, a thatched-roof church, a handful of cafés and restaurants, and the relaxing Bodden landscape.
Stopover in Wiek am Darß
After exploring the picturesque town of Born am Darß and devouring the delicious cake, we cycled on to the village of Wiek. Just 745 people live here, also in a very idyllic location on the Bodstedter Bodden. During the season, you can take a trip on traditional Zees boats at the small harbor, browse the galleries in town, or get active on the water (fishing, sailing, kiting, etc.).
In Wiek, you’ll also find numerous thatched-roof houses, colorful doors, a few cafés, and restaurants. It’s only 5.3 km to the stunningly beautiful north beach in Prerow, and just 10 km to the west beach (near Ahrenshoop or by hiking).
Vorpommersche-Boddenlandschaft National Park
Completely spontaneously, we decided to take a detour to the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. From Wiek, it was only about 5.5 km to Prerow, which we quickly left behind in just 15 minutes. In our opinion, the national park is one of the most beautiful in the entire country and is particularly impressive due to its diverse landscapes.
This time we drove directly through the park to the Darß lighthouse, but we have already done the circular hike through the park and it is highly recommended. On the other side of the peninsula, you shouldn’t miss the national park’s highlights (e.g., Hohe Düne).
Lighthouse & West Beach
From Prerow, most visitors hike directly to the lighthouse or take the circular hike over the dunes. By bike, you’ll reach the dunes shortly before you reach them, but you’ll have to lock it up there and continue on foot.
From the beach parking lot, it’s about 5 kilometers by bike or on foot to the lighthouse. The paths are signposted, so it’s virtually impossible to get lost. Just before the lighthouse, you’ll find plenty of parking for your bike, and you can then stroll down the dune to the western edge. It’s always beautiful there!
Return trip through the Darß primeval forest
We got our provisions on the west beach, spread out our beach towels, and made ourselves comfortable under the pleasantly warm sun. Most of the visitors were already on their way back, so we only had to share the west beach with a few people. Simply wonderful!
After about a half-hour break, we slowly made our way back, as we still had 14 kilometers to go to Ahrenshoop. The bike path now led us through the picturesque and extremely lush Darß primeval forest, which was now once again glowing in lush green. This part of the bike tour was definitely one of the most beautiful for us!
Conclusion of the bike tour through Fischland
To be honest, we already knew this tour would be amazing. And why did we know that? Because it always is! The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is so diverse and idyllic, every tour, no matter how short, is simply fun. Whether cycling, hiking, or lounging on the beach – Fischland offers the perfect mix of everything.
We can definitely recommend our bike tour! The tour isn’t particularly strenuous, but you should still have some stamina. The 40 kilometers can easily be covered in 2 hours, but with all the breaks and stops, you should plan on 5 to 6 hours. This way, you can explore the places at your leisure and take a coffee or beach break here and there.
