Explore Iceland’s Winter Wonders Today

So, here’s the thing – I’m on a mission to hunt down the Northern Lights, and after bouncing some ideas around, Iceland popped up as a prime contender for a chilly getaway. Though I’ve sampled the Icelandic summer vibes, I’ve got my sights set on a frosty adventure this time around. Fancy joining the ride?

Why We’re Eyeing Iceland in the Off-Season

I usually dodge winter like it’s going out of style, except for our annual ski trip. My partner is all about the slopes, while I’m more into the cozy après-ski scene (who can blame me?). 😉

Our ski rendezvous this year is at the Val Seny ski resort in Japan – I’m buzzing with excitement! But that’s just the appetizer. Here’s my slightly irrational yet compelling case for more winter jaunts:

  • It’s an epic season for Northern Lights hunting. Alright, there’s no guarantee we’ll catch Mother Nature’s fireworks, but fingers crossed!
  • As a Floridian, the mere thought of a chilly climate sounds… cozy? Imagine snuggling by a roaring fire after a soak in a steamy hot spring.
  • Iceland’s been on my radar for another round, and with summer plans off the table, this is my shot.

I’m curious about those who’ve braved Iceland’s icy embrace outside summer. Does it live up to its frosty reputation? As a sunshine-loving Floridian, will I turn into an icicle at these temperatures, or is it manageable? 😉

And speaking of managing, what’s the deal with driving in Icelandic snow? I’m a decent driver in theory, but my snow experience is shaky at best. Is snow a sporadic surprise, or is it a regular driving hazard?

My Iceland Flight Strategy

Flying to Iceland can be a cheeky game of points and fares. Icelandair’s the top dog for year-round flights, but don’t bank on redeeming points for business class – it’s a tough nut to crack.

Here’s my plan: hop over to Continental Europe first, then grab a snazzy business class ticket back to the US, with an Iceland pit stop. It’s a neat trick for snagging good fares, aligning with my quest for value and variety in flight experiences.

The Iceland Hotels We’re Scoping Out

Still hashing out the itinerary. Reykjavik’s on the menu for a couple of nights, with the Reykjavik EDITION topping my list for its dash of luxury and points potential.

While on Reykjavik, any must-try dining spots you folks would recommend? Spill the culinary secrets – I’m ready to indulge!

Next, aiming for a secluded retreat – better odds for those elusive Northern Lights. But yikes, Deplar Farm’s price tag is a bit too spicy for my taste, so here’s the shortlist I’m juggling:

  • ION Adventure Hotel – a Marriott gem with mixed reviews but budget-friendly vibes.
  • Hotel Ranga – secluded and beloved, plus there’s a Hilton Honors twist with the points game.
  • Torfhus Retreat – oozing charm, though it’s not on the points map.

Been to any? If you’ve got the dirt (good or bad) on these places, dish it out! It might make choosing a tad easier.

Now, onto my Icelandic lodging conundrum: should I splurge on The Retreat at Blue Lagoon? Sure, Blue Lagoon screams tourist territory, and my visit a decade ago didn’t win any awards in my book.

But perhaps The Retreat brings a new twist? Sure, it’s pricey, but word on the street is it’s got killer views and decent dining. Worth the splurge for a night or two, or just an overpriced trap?

Bottom Line

It’s been a hot minute since I roamed Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes, and it’s high time for a return. I have high hopes for those mystical Northern Lights, but even sans spectacle, I reckon the trip will be a cozy, adventurous romp.

Still mulling over how to slice up my Iceland days wisely, especially outside Reykjavik. Any nuggets of wisdom or tips on eateries, sleeps, and sights? I’m all ears!
