General information about Thailand
Thailand is located in Southeast Asia and borders Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. The country impresses with a diverse landscape of mountains, rivers, tropical rainforest, and long stretches of coastline on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The country can be roughly divided into two main regions: Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand.
The north is characterized by mountainous landscapes, dense jungle, and cultural highlights such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Impressive temples, traditional markets, and ideal conditions for trekking tours await you here.
The south of Thailand particularly impresses with its beautiful beaches and idyllic islands – both on the Andaman coast (Phuket Island, Krabi/Ao Nang, Koh Lanta) and on the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao).
The geographical diversity brings with it different climate zones: While three distinct seasons dominate in the north, the south has a year-round tropical climate with warm temperatures, but different rainy seasons on the two coasts. Depending on the region and season, Thailand always offers new experiences – from active adventures in nature to relaxing days by the sea.
Best Time to Travel to Thailand
As already mentioned, The tropical climate is strongly influenced by monsoon winds. Therefore, the weather can be roughly divided into two regions: Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand.
While you won’t find any beaches in Northern Thailand, you will find beautiful nature, mountains, and exciting cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The optimal time to travel to the north is from November to February. During this time, you can expect pleasant temperatures of up to 33 degrees Celsius; it is dry and not too humid. From March to May, it gets really hot, with temperatures often climbing above 40 degrees Celsius. The rainy season in the north runs from June to October, when it can rain heavily, but usually only briefly.
Southern Thailand, in turn, is influenced by two different coastlines: the Andaman Coast (with destinations such as the islands of Phuket, Khao Lak, Ao Nang, and Koh Lanta) and the Gulf of Thailand (with Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao). Both coasts have their own rainy seasons and best travel times – depending on which island or region you want to visit, you should take this into account when planning.
- Andaman Sea: The perfect travel time is from November to April.
- Gulf of Thailand: The best time to travel here is between January and September, while October to December is often characterized by rain.
