General Information about Blue Bay
The beautiful Blue Bay is located in the southeast of Mauritius and is only about 6 kilometers from Mahebourg. You can take the bus from Mahebourg, arrive in your own car, or, of course, conveniently by taxi. The infrastructure in this area is quite good; you’ll find parking, food, hotels, restrooms, and plenty of tour operators that are sure to appeal to you.
Caution: If you’re planning a quiet day at the beach, Blue Bay might not be the right place for you. In addition to the many tourists, locals mingle with the crowds, especially on weekends, for camping and BBQs. By then, the beach is quite busy and somewhat crowded. On weekdays, and especially early in the morning, there’s significantly less going on here, allowing you to enjoy the bay to the fullest.
The soft sandy beach
The first beach we visited in Mauritius was actually Blue Bay. As soon as we got off the bus, we were amazed by the sea’s hues of blue. The view was made perfect by the white and, above all, soft sandy beach and the green palm trees. What a paradise! Blue Bay is not only very popular with tourists but also with locals, which is why there’s always something going on here.
The beach slopes gently into the water, and the water is very clear and warm. Here, children can splash around carefree and play in the sand and water. The beach’s location also protects it from strong winds and high waves.
You can use all beach areas, even if a five-star hotel is located in front of it. All beaches in Mauritius are public! Unfortunately, since there are many boats in the bay, the bathing area is cordoned off.
Parking, Food & Co.
Directly in front of the beach, you’ll find a free parking lot where you can park your car. You’ll also find a mini-market (Blue Bay Superette) nearby, although it’s a bit more expensive. Instead, feast on the many delicacies offered by locals in their small food trucks at very reasonable prices. There are burgers, samosas, faratas, and sandwiches, among others. You can get many of these snacks for just €1 or €2.
Highlights in Blue Bay
Blue Bay is particularly popular because of its underwater world. The Blue Bay Marine Park is a water conservation area and serves as a habitat for a wide variety of animal species. More than 38 coral and 72 tropical fish species are found here, which is why the area is such a popular snorkeling spot. Discover zebrafish, parrotfish, pufferfish, pipefish, wrasse, and even barracudas. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the rare hawksbill turtles in the bay.
Kayaking, glass-bottom boats & SUPs
Numerous tours are offered on the beach, and you’ll quickly be approached by tour guides. We went on a snorkeling tour with a glass-bottom boat and a kayak tour. We rented or booked both spontaneously on site.
During the first tour, we and a few other guests took a boat ride out into the bay for a few minutes and were then able to jump into the water and marvel at the colorful fish. Please avoid stepping on corals while snorkeling and swim carefully through the water (there are many other boats and tourists around).
On another trip, we rented a kayak with friends and paddled across the bay on our own, all the way to the small island of Ile Des Deux Cocos. As a visitor, you are only allowed to stay on the beach; the rest of the island is reserved for guests of the hotel located there (LUX Resort).
So we made ourselves comfortable on the beach and enjoyed the great weather. You really can’t believe how turquoise the water is there, it’s simply amazing! This tour is also the most environmentally friendly, as we were able to do without a motorboat and many other tourists.

Tourism & Coral Death
The first time we visited Blue Bay in Mauritius, the bay was well-visited but not overcrowded. Therefore, we cannot understand the negative reviews on Tripadvisor* (beach overcrowded, many boats on the water, etc.). In 2016 and 2017, the entire island was very relaxed, and we really enjoyed our four months there.
We were always very flexible and were able to explore all the popular spots on the island during the week instead of on the weekend. Have you been there in the past few years? Let us know in the comments how things are going.
Unfortunately, during our visits, many of the corals no longer looked quite so vibrant (pale and gray). It’s a shame, considering that it’s actually a marine conservation area. However, we read in a forum that they are already cultivating corals and trying to rebuild the reefs step by step. This will certainly take many years, but at least it’s a step in the right direction.
Blue Bay Hotels
There are some really chic and exclusive hotels in the bay and the surrounding area. You can also find simpler hotels and even vacation apartments there. We’ve picked out a few accommodations for you.
Conclusion: Blue Bay Mauritius
We very much hope we were able to give you a good first impression of Blue Bay in Mauritius. It’s a very touristy, yet also very beautiful area. We had a wonderful time in the bay both times and would definitely recommend a trip there.
Unfortunately, we can’t tell you what the situation is like there currently (tourism, the 2020 oil spill, etc.). However, as soon as we receive firsthand information, we will update this post.
