Best time to travel to Jordan
Basically, you can travel to Jordan all year round. However, there are months that are better and months that are less suitable. We’ve looked at some climate tables (including those on www.wetter.de), which show that the best time to travel to Jordan is spring from April to May, and autumn from September to November.
During these months, it’s pleasantly warm, not too hot, and there’s little rain. Of course, you can also travel to Jordan in the summer months, but expect very high temperatures.
The winter months are also ideal for a beach holiday on the Red Sea or a diving adventure, as it’s warmer in the south of the country than in other regions anyway. Between May and September, you can expect temperatures up to 35°C and water temperatures between 20°C and 27°C.
Winters in the country can be very cold, wet, and windy. We were lucky in January and were even able to swim in the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. This despite all the other travel blogs warning against traveling to Jordan in January.
The Climate in Jordan
Because Jordan lies in a climatic transition zone, the country experiences humid winter months from the Mediterranean, but also a hot, dry desert climate. The Red Sea region in particular (e.g., Aqaba) is very dry year-round, very hot in the summer, and still sunny and mild in the winter.
In the northwestern part of the country, summers are also hot and dry, but the winter months here are rather humid. Especially in the mountainous regions, it can get very cold in winter, and occasionally it even snows.
On the way to Petra, we had to climb quite a bit and suddenly found ourselves in front of a snowy landscape. Crazy! The “rainy season,” if you can call it that in a desert country, is between November/December and March. During this time, you can expect about 5 to 11 rainy days per month.
Most precipitation, however, only occurs in January and February. If you travel in the south and east of the country, you can expect a typical desert climate. Especially in midsummer, it can get extremely hot during the day, with temperatures often climbing to 35°C to 38°C.
Optimal climate for the capital, Amman
Jordan’s capital is located in the north of the country. Amman is a truly cool and vibrant city that makes you want to see more. Bolle and Marco really enjoyed it there and have summarized their highlights here in this separate post.
The best time to visit Amman is from March to November (source: www.wetter.de), with pleasant temperatures and little rain. December, January, and February are still quite cool in our opinion, with temperatures between 14°C and 16°C. The months of July and August, with temperatures up to 28°C and above, are less suitable for a city trip, unless you can handle these temperatures.
Best time to visit the rock city of Petra
One of the absolute highlights of the country is by far the ancient rock city of Petra in the south of the country. Here, an entire city was carved into the rock and offers numerous attractions. If you’re planning a visit to the rock city of Petra, you should travel between March and November.
We wouldn’t necessarily recommend a visit in summer due to the heat (up to 40°C!!!), but it’s still possible. We weren’t in Jordan during the summer, so we can only assume the heat must be unbearable.
As the sun approaches the horizon, it gets noticeably cooler inside the rock city of Petra. You should bring a sweater or jacket with you either way. We were there in January and were very lucky with the weather. We were able to explore the ruined city at a pleasant 20°C, with sunshine and blue skies. Jackpot!
According to climate charts, the most pleasant months are April, May, September, October, and November. Ultimately, everyone has to decide for themselves which month to choose.
Best Time to Travel to the Wadi Rum Desert
Do you really want to take a detour to the desert and admire the lunar landscapes for yourself? The Wadi Rum Desert is a MUST! However, you should pay attention to the temperatures here. The warmest months are June, July, August, and September.
Then it gets really hot in the desert, and you can often only bear it in the shade. Freezing temperatures, on the other hand, can be expected in January. At times, we were really freezing, even when the sun was shining. Luckily, we had our thick winter jackets with us.
Nevertheless, you can travel to the desert year-round; you just have to be prepared. The Bedouin tents are well-equipped and have everything you need, even for icy nights. The most pleasant months are March, April, and May, as well as October and November. During these months, temperatures climb to between 20°C and 30°C. Rain falls very rarely here (Source: www.wetter.de).
Best Months for the Dead Sea
When you think of Jordan and your upcoming trip, you’re probably already looking forward to a unique bathing experience in the Dead Sea, right? Right on the border with Israel, in the very east of the country, you can have this experience and float like a buoy on the surface of the Dead Sea. The best time to visit the Dead Sea in Jordan is between September and May. During this time, it’s not too hot, and the water temperature is pleasant.
This is also possible in the summer months, of course. It simply depends on what temperature you prefer for swimming, as the summer months can get extremely hot, reaching almost 40°C. However, we would definitely recommend the experience of floating through the water, regardless of whether you choose hot summer days or pleasant autumn days. We had perfect weather in January with over 22°C, and the water was also pleasantly warm. In the end, you can never predict the weather 100% anyway.
Best time to travel to the Red Sea
Perhaps you’ll start your trip in the very south of the country, on the Red Sea? Here, you can enjoy a beach holiday year-round. While we were still freezing in the Wadi Rum desert in icy temperatures, the next moment we were lying on the beach by the Red Sea in our bathing suits at almost 28°C. Crazy, right? And that in January. The climate table clearly shows that the thermometer can reach 40°C in summer (Source: www.klimatabelle.de).
If you don’t like it quite so hot, you should choose the months of March, April, May, September, October, November, and December. Rain rarely falls here, so you won’t need an umbrella. But be sure to pack your sunscreen; the sun shines brightly here. Even in the winter months, the sun shines for at least 8 hours a day. Water temperatures reach up to 26°C in summer and at least 20°C in winter.
Conclusion on the best time to travel to Jordan
Jordan is a magical country that will give you so many new, unexpected experiences. Generally, you can travel there year-round. However, the best time to travel is April and May, as well as September to mid-November.
During this time, it is not as hot as, for example, in the summer months. If you don’t like rain and cold, you should definitely avoid January and February, as it rains 5 to 11 days a month, at least in the northern part of the country.
Summer temperatures are very high at 35°C to 38°C, so the pleasant spring or autumn, with average temperatures of 20°C to 25°C, are more suitable. You can also enjoy a beach holiday year-round, whether at the Dead Sea or the Red Sea.
The water is usually at least 20°C. However, the months between March and November are better. No matter which month you choose to travel, Jordan is AMAZING!
