Climate in Hong Kong

The metropolis of Hong Kong is located in Asia on the south coast of the People’s Republic of China. It has a very humid subtropical climate, which varies considerably throughout the seasons. According to climate tables, winters are usually mild and cool. In summer, however, it is very hot, humid, and wet. Typical of the humid subtropical climate in Asia is the annual monsoon season, which brings the city plenty of rain and high humidity. The monsoon has a strong influence on the climate; it begins in spring and usually lasts until midsummer.

But when in the year can you expect the most rainfall? When I look at the climate tables for Hong Kong, it quickly becomes clear that most rain falls in the months April to September. It rains here on average every other day. August is considered the wettest month.

But not only does the amount of rain change throughout the year, temperatures also fluctuate depending on the season. The coldest months, with around 19 °C during the day and 14 °C at night, are January and February. It gets hot, just like here, in the summer. Daytime temperatures here average 30°C from June to September. Although it cools down at night, it’s still very warm at 25°C.

Best time to visit Hong Kong

If you’re looking for the best time to visit Hong Kong, you’re in for a treat, as there are several options available. Spring and autumn are generally recommended as very good times to visit. The months of October, November, March, and April are particularly perfect for a trip to Hong Kong. Pleasant temperatures between 20°C and 30°C can be expected here. Autumn, in particular, offers plenty of sunshine and rare rainfall. In spring, it’s generally a bit cloudy and the weather is a bit more changeable. Nevertheless, these months are very suitable for your trip to Hong Kong.

If you’re primarily looking for a typical city trip and have a light jacket with you, winter is also a good time to travel. It offers stable, pleasant weather and temperatures just below 20°C. It’s a bit cooler, but this can actually be very pleasant for a city trip. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend traveling in midsummer, as various weather services say that severe storms (typhoons) can occur, especially in August and September.

Climate from late September to April

Autumn, winter, and spring are definitely good times for a trip to Hong Kong. The sun shines for around 5 to 6 hours a day, and temperatures range from 17°C to 27°C, depending on the month. Rainfall occurs only 2 to 6 days per month, making a trip to Hong Kong very pleasant. In November and December, the average number of rainy days is only 2-3 per month. These are the perfect conditions for a fantastic time in the exotic, colorful, and bustling metropolis of Hong Kong.

Climate from June to September

The months of June, July, August, and September are Hong Kong’s “problem children” when it comes to the weather. The long, heavy rain showers and storms make a trip less than pleasant. It rains an average of 15 to 17 days per month. Temperatures rise above 30°C during this time, and humidity increases significantly. The sun struggles to break through the clouds throughout the year. Only occasionally will you catch a glimpse of the sun’s rays. Therefore, German summer holidays are only partially suitable for a trip to Hong Kong.

Conclusion on the best time to travel to Hong Kong

A trip to Hong Kong will be unforgettable, no matter what time of year you visit. If you’re in the mood for a city trip, autumn and spring are great times. But winter shouldn’t be overlooked either, as it brings a few degrees cooler temperatures but stable and pleasant weather with temperatures between 17°C and 20°C. Long pants and a light jacket should be in your suitcase.

I personally wouldn’t consider the months from June to August/September as a travel time, as the persistent and unpleasant heavy rain can really spoil your mood. Then you should travel to Indonesia or Vietnam instead. Have you piqued your interest in Hong Kong? Then go ahead: book your flights and head to the Asian metropolis.
