If you want to enjoy the views of the beautiful mountain, you can go up the very popular Grossglockner Hohalpenstrasse alpine road , which you will reach after a few kilometers if you return to Krössenbach on Ferleiten .

Vacation in Austria: Retelstein Castle is a small guardian of the Danube
During our cycling trips in Austria, we stopped in the town of Hainburg . This medieval city, over which the Hainburg Castle towers , hides many natural and historical secrets. One of them is the ruins of Retelstein Castle , which is hidden in the arms of the national park.
Rest in Austria . If you want to visit this historical and architectural rarity, probably the easiest way is to go down to the Danube embankment. We did the same, and the route described in the following lines gave us impressions that we remember with pleasure.
But let’s start everything in order. Near the Danube embankment in the town of Heinburg , you can find an exit to the Danube cycle route , a small harbor, medieval fortress walls, various restaurants or a park with benches offering relaxation with a view of the great European river. This park is a kind of gateway to the Danube Meadows National Park , Donau-Auen in German . If you wanted to leave the bikes here, we didn’t find a rack here, but it was enough to attach the lock to the bench.
The inconspicuous entrance to the national park is marked only by a small sign indicating the name of the park and the rules to be followed. One is the rule against cycling through the national park, which many visitors on our trip ignored. A sandy path, about 1.5 meters wide, leads through the national park, which soon led us to a tunnel in a cave, formed by a conglomerate of rocks, also called breccia . Vacation in Austria. Passing through the several-meter tunnel was a pleasant annual refreshment, because the air temperature that day exceeded 30 ° C. Rock formations with caves accompanied us for several tens of meters. While there were rocks on one side of the road, the beauty of the surrounding area opened up to us on the other. Small “bays”, “island” ledges, overgrown with grass, or trees “growing” out of the water. On the way to our goal, we were accompanied by clouds of mosquitoes and signposts for runners with a marked distance. After 2 kilometers we reached the place. On the grassy lawn stood a massive wall and a scoreboard, which reported on the significance and history of this place. 5 meters further there was a path leading to the stairs, which led us to the small courtyard of the castle ruins. The yard was bordered by railings that protect visitors of this amazing attraction from falling.
As we learned, Retelstein Castle, also called Heimenburg (Older Castle) was smaller than the more famous and magnificent ruins of Hainburg and Devin Castles. It stood on a rocky precipice, 30 meters high, and the first mentions of it date back to 1180. As the name of the castle suggests, it was named after the Retelstein family , who lived here. Its purpose is still unknown. It is not known whether it was a border castle or for defense. But, most likely, it served to control trade and fishing on the Danube. Later, other rulers took turns in the castle, and in the 16th century it was captured by the Turks. Subsequently, it was dismantled for the construction of the nearby town of Hainburg, so only the remains of the outer wall and the palace wall have survived to this day.
After being saturated with historical facts, we admired the views of the wooded area for a bit. On the way back on our two-wheeled horses, we turned our attention to literally pebbly beaches washed by the Danube. We stopped at one of them, collected some beautiful stones and even shells. We felt almost like we were at sea. Winter is in full swing, and the snow in our country is getting less and less every year. If you are not satisfied with the size of our slopes and their artificial snow, you have no choice but to go to the Alps .
Austria offers many opportunities for skiing. You can choose between different small centers that are located separately or are part of a large complex that combines one ski pass and shuttle service. Someone, on the contrary, prefers a large ski complex, individual parts of which are connected by many cable cars so that no one gets bored of their system – and there are many of them here. You just need to choose. Let’s take a closer look at some centers.
Rest in Austria . Western Dachstein (Dachstein West) is a ski resort located at the northwestern foot of the Dachstein massif . The gateway to the ski slopes is the village of Russbach , where right on the main highway is the starting station of the Hornbahn cable car , which will take you several hundred meters up. The next starting point is the village of Ghazan and further south is the new Panorama Jet gondola lift Zwieselalm , whose departure station is near the first car park adjacent to the Gozause glacial lake . The last village of this winter resort is Annaberg im Lammertal. The villages are connected by free ski buses, which will also bring you from nearby villages and towns, such as Bad Ischl , Hallstatt and others.
Rest in Austria . This small family or village ski resort is located about 6 hours from Vienna . Its atmosphere is created by wonderful panoramas that resemble mountains from a poster. Views of the peaks of the Ghazan ridge (a 2,000-meter limestone needle) and the probably well-known Dachstein glacierbeautiful The surroundings of the resort definitely get a good rating. For fans of cross-country skiing in this region, tracks are also prepared, namely from the valley of the village of Ghazan to the Ghazan Hintertal , where the route ends near the small Gozaub lake . If you prefer a running ring in the valley, go to Annaberg , where there are two rings several dozen kilometers long near the village of Lungets .
Austria: Skiing in the Alps – the endless slopes of the ski resort Skicircus – Saalbach
In the previous article, we presented a family-type ski resort.
If its red runs were not enough for you, and you need real black slopes for great driving pleasure, go, for example, a hundred kilometers southwest of the picturesque ski town of Saalbach.
It is the main center of Skicircus, which is the general name of the complex, which includes dozens of ski slopes connected by lifts. In addition to Saalbach, you can find the following two ski towns – Hinterglemm and Leogang . This season, Skitcircus has changed its logo. Why did this happen? Because starting this year, it has a big surprise for its visitors: the towns welcomed the next co-host of entertainment – the neighboring resort of Fiberbrunn .
Rest in Austria . Skicircus has an advantage, first of all, thanks to many kilometers of ski slopes – from the most moderate to very steep. The peaks of the mountains surrounding this valley fluctuate around the 2,000-meter border, so there are no glaciers on them – they are open only in the season. From the valley, the bridges of Saalbach and Hinterglemm , ski slopes lead to all the peaks in the vicinity. They are very ingeniously connected so that it is possible to drive through the entire valley.
Let’s take a look at individual ski towns. The first point of the excursion is, of course, Saalbach. This resort is primarily visited by people who love the ideal skiing atmosphere. The southern slopes offer blue and red runs, so they are suitable for children. There are chairlifts and gondola-type lifts that even lead to Mount Kolmaiskopf at the same time.
Looking south, you’ll see picturesque hotels against the backdrop of the Schätberg Ost mountain . Lovers of black trails will have their hearts beat faster. There is a gondola lift directly from the center of the mountain. You can enjoy its shorter descents with views of the edge or try to descend in one go on the northern slope of this mountain right to its foot. This is the longest descent in the resort, which is about 8 km. This descent is good in the morning when it is still prepared. After dinner, the last kilometers turn into a tough battle with meter-long bumps, so that the thigh muscles will not rest at the end of the ride.
An older standing-room-only gondola lift will take you up from the Forderglemm Valley. Only the view of the opposite Kaprun glacier from Mount Wildenkarkogel will surely energize you. You can return along the ridge (near people relaxing on sunbeds) in Saalbach or head to Leogang. Is it worth going there?
Austria: Skiing in the Alps – endless slopes of the ski resort Skicircus – Leogang, Hinterglemm
Having crossed the ski slopes in the vicinity of the town of Saalbach, we are on the northern ridge of the Wildenkarkogel mountain and we are heading in the direction of Leogang .
First we meet a four-chair lift, under which a beautiful white “highway” passes. Then it descends into the eastern valley, where a road with turns has been prepared for visitors – Montelino Trail . There are two more or less steep descents from the Grosser Azitz mountain , as well as from the nearby Klein Azitz mountain . If you climb to the top of Klein Azitz by six-seater lift, you will be interested on the right side by skiers and snowboarders who demonstrate their learned elements on large and small jumps.
Rest in Austria . The view from Azits Broy to the Leogang valley is beautiful, thanks to the mountain massif standing directly in front of you. A wide blue track leads to the valley. Right on its flat top is a small Poma lift. If you’re a beginner skier but still want to be a part of the mountain peaks with skis on your feet, this small piste allows you to ride your long, slow turns on the edge, as well as enjoy views that you rarely get on other small piste (below you can go down again on the lift). Experienced skiers can go down the slope steeply. You can ignore it and skip the intermediate station on the long Azitzbahn gondola-type cable car, and continue along the valley or on the black or red track straight down to the Poma-type children’s lift.
Often this route to the intermediate station is shrouded in fog. After overcoming the next height meters on the lift, the ski track will offer you a fabulous view above the fluffy clouds. The next descent option is after the intermediate station, where you need to keep to the left. There is a four-seater lift above the short ski run, which is essentially the only lift where you can (in good weather) sunbathe on the way up, which is naturally a nice change. If you live in Leogang, you can also visit the local floodlit toboggan run.
The third part is the westernmost town of Hinterglemm , where there are also many slopes. The dominant mountain is Shatberga West , which offers a beautiful view of the distant peaks of two thousand mountains. A short black track leads from the summit, which in most cases has the perfect snow hardness for a pleasant descent. A long red track leads to the valley. The black pistes of the Zwelferkogel mountain are also very significant. More gentle descents can be found on the other side of the valley.
The whole area offers many good restaurants and outdoor bars, both on the mountaintops and on the slopes. But what would this skiing mean without Austrian soup and golden beer. However, every ski center offers them.
