So, here’s an interesting nugget from the aviation world. American Airlines, traditionally lagging behind its competitors in the tech department, has given its mobile app a makeover. This should probably be a cause for some low-key celebration, don’t you think?

American is rolling out a fresh new look for its mobile app, anticipated to reach everyone by the end of May 2025. You can either jump the gun with a manual update or wait for it to pop up by itself. Let’s be clear, though—this isn’t the grand finale. Instead, it’s setting the stage for more exciting updates and features down the line.

So, what can American’s customers look forward to right away?

• A personalized home screen that expertly displays upcoming journeys alongside AAdvantage account info
• The app now works seamlessly on an iPad (finally!)
• A shiny new section for AAdvantage members, showcasing account details, status, and miles
• A dedicated hub for all your upcoming trips, with intuitive options to check flight status and locate a specific trip
• Simplified navigation that feels right at home alongside the apps you use daily
• Travel inspiration related to American’s destinations and methods to interact with their partners
• New iOS enhancements, including “Live Activities” that exhibit real-time flight updates on your lock screen

And of course, these come alongside the stalwarts you know and love, like online check-in, mobile boarding passes, live flight status, baggage tracking, and more.

This Bit of Progress is Promising

I spent a few minutes fiddling with the newly spruced-up American app, and it certainly looks more appealing. However, at the moment, the changes seem mostly skin-deep. Yet, it’s promising to see American throwing some resources into elevating its tech game. I wonder what surprise goodies they’ve cooked up for future updates, as they’ve played their cards close to their chest on that front.

Historically, American has trailed behind in the tech race, especially in comparison to United. However, they have been steadily making incremental improvements over time, and their app isn’t all that bad to use. My chief gripe remains the glitches—if they can ensure glitch-free operations, I’ll be more than satisfied.
