A civilized vacation spot for cultured people – this is how the Austrian region of Carinthia can be described as a tourist destination. Carinthia, located in the very south of Austria, fascinates at first sight: snow-capped Alpine peaks, harsh glaciers, stalactite caves, dense forests, crystal-clear lakes, thermal springs.

And amidst all this beauty, medieval castles with moss-covered walls tower, ancient monasteries attract with their mystery, and cute European houses with tiled roofs delight the eye. Tourists who expect something special from their vacation that is not boring will be able to appreciate these lands.

If you can’t stand the heat, but you love the warmth, if you want to swim in clean water, admire natural beauties and historical monuments, then Carinthia is your option. And what is especially nice – in terms of budget, the region is very democratic, some experts claim that in terms of the level of “cheapness” of prices Carinthia gives a head start to many resorts in Europe.

Magic lakes.

For its numerous lakes (there are 1270 of them here!), as well as its unique almost Mediterranean microclimate, Carinthia is called the Austrian Riviera. Many tourists prefer to relax in the summer in July – August. It is precisely at this, the most “hot” time of year, when the thermometer column is going off scale in many seaside resorts, that the lakes of Carinthia are very comfortable: the air temperature here, even in the hottest months, does not exceed 30 °, and the water in the reservoirs warms up to an average of 26 °. The warmest water (about 28 °) is in Lake Klopeinersee. Hotels are comfortably located around it, separated from the water by a small promenade.

Among the other most popular Carinthian lakes with tourists are Wörthersee, Millstättersee, Ossiachersee and Faakersee. In total, bathing areas are equipped on 200 lakes, surprisingly clean: the water in them is officially recognized as drinking water. These are not empty words – in confirmation of this fact, the mayor of the city of Klagenfurt (located on the eastern shore of the lake) – the capital of the state of Carinthia, once a year goes to the middle of the largest lake – Wörthersee, scoops up a mug of water and publicly drinks it!

On the western shore of Wörthersee, 25 km from Klagenfurt Airport, lies Felden – the most fun resort in the region. Maxim Prystavka, Deputy General Director of Jet Travel, says: “It is even difficult to list all the types of entertainment in Velden. Starting from casinos, discos, bars, cafes and restaurants, ending with various kinds of events – be it a run of vintage cars, a biker rally, music festivals, festive festivities with music and fireworks. There is also a huge number of types of active recreation and sports. ”

Also beautiful are the Ossiachersee lakes (the most important musical event in the region, the Carinthian Summer festival, takes place on its shores), the “lake trio” Faakersee (there are many restaurants in these parts, and an annual gourmet festival is held here), and the Koechachersee (note: a place for nudists to relax). In the protected area of the Koichi Valley lie the enchanting Koichichersee, Rauschelesee, Basshaigensee and Hafnersee …

And the bays of the Weissensee, located at an altitude of over 900 m. and representing the pinnacle of alpine bathing lakes, resemble Norwegian fjords.

Sports opportunities.

As a rule, everyone knows and appreciates the winter advantages of the region: excellent ski slopes, fabulous ice rinks on the icy lake surface … But summer opens up a lot of other opportunities: hiking, paragliding, cycling, breathtaking rafting or canoeing on turbulent mountain rivers …

In Carinthia, you literally can’t sit still, just contemplating the beauty of Austrian nature or sunbathing on the lake shore. And even then, looking at others, you’re so tempted to go surfing, sailing, or, for example, diving. Or maybe – wakeboarding and water skiing. Fishing? There will be a bite! If you like tennis, know that in Carinthia there are over a thousand courts equipped for this game!

Horseback riding? And here the Austrians did not lose: in Carinthia the largest network of routes for those who want to ride horses in Europe has been created, and this is more than 600 km! If you prefer golf – please: in the region there are more than 10 equipped courses. For example, the Dell Golf Club on the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee has received international recognition: it has 11 holes set in a forest and a fairway (a medium-length grass area that takes up most of the playing field) located on a hill with a wonderful view of the lake. In the vicinity of the Drobollach village (belonging to the city of Villach) on the northern shore of Lake Faaker See there are seven excellent courses of 18 holes each, as well as a golf course for young players.

Among active travelers, a very popular excursion to one of the caves of Mount Obir, where you can see stalactites and stalagmites. To get there, you don’t have to be a speleologist. Warm clothes, comfortable shoes – and go!

Sightseeings.

Those wishing to diversify their vacation in Carinthia can go on excursions to cozy and very pretty local towns, the appearance of which was formed under the influence of the cultures of neighboring countries: the region borders Italy and Slovenia. A significant part of the territory of Carinthia was inhabited by Slovenes for a long time. Back in the 19th century, they made up a third of the region’s population and, therefore, had a significant influence on Carinthian traditions. The region also has an Italian influence: in the 16th century, buildings in small local towns were built in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Moreover, Italy is so close – in just a couple of hours by car you can reach Venice and the Apennine part of the Adriatic coast. Among the main local attractions are the ancient cities of Villach and Spital located on the banks of the Drava River, the cathedral of Gurka – one of the main monuments of Romanesque architecture in the country …

It is interesting to climb the observation tower “Pyramid-Kogel” (905 m) in Kötschach. From it you can admire the beauty of the landscapes of Carinthia. From its northern part, you can see Lake Wörthersee, the village of Maria Wörth, the city of Pörtschach, the Görlitz and Nockberge mountains. From the eastern part, you can see Klagenfurt and Hochosterwitz Fortress. From the southern part, you can see an idyllic panorama: the lakes Hafnersee, Koechachersee and Rauschelsee, and behind them – the Karawanken rocks.

Hochosterwitz Fortress stands at an altitude of 681 m in the Dolomites near Launsdorf. It was first mentioned in 860, and acquired its current shape and dimensions between 1570 and 1886. In one of the 14 gates of the fortress is a Gothic chapel.

A trip to Grossglockner Mountain (3798 m) is breathtaking. This is the highest point in Austria and the second highest peak in Europe.

In 1930, a 48 km high alpine road was built here. It connects the towns of Heiligenblut in Carinthia and Bruck in Salzburg. A trip along it is a unique opportunity to drive through the Alpine highlands into the world of glaciers, waterfalls, mountain goats and eagles. This is the Hohe Tauern National Park – one of the largest in Europe. There, from a height of almost 2.5 thousand m, a magical panorama of the mountains and the Pasterze glacier opens – the largest in the Eastern Alps. Scientists state that since the 19th century it has been actively melting. You can go down to the edge of the glacier by cable car.

As part of this excursion, tourists also visit a mountain cheese factory, admire the beauty of the gorges with the Raggashlyukht waterfall and explore the village of gold miners. This unforgettable, truly amazing journey lasts a whole day.

Carinthia: Around the highest peak

The highest point of the Austrian Alps, the Grossglockner (3,798 meters) belongs to the federal state of Carinthia, in the very south of the Ostmark. And you can see this extraordinary high-altitude beauty with your own eyes – fortunately, the Carinthian tourist offices offer a route through the Hohe Tauern National Park, on the territory of which the peak is located.

Heiligenblut Village

In the “High Tower” there is the amazing village of Heiligenblut (literally translated as “holy blood”), which is a true tourist paradise. Excursions to the unmelting glacier, satisfying the ambitions of amateur climbers, and completely safe, like all in Austria, gentle horses, ready to give their backs even to inexperienced riders, tennis courts for players and lakes with fish for anglers …

Heiligenblut is a small ski resort at the foot of the Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. From here begins the panoramic road through the Austrian Alps, which is open only from May to October. Its length is only 48 km, but you won’t be able to overcome the route in an hour: 36 hairpin bends and incredible landscapes will interfere.

Allocate a whole day to explore the road, because it is impossible to be here for less: you want to stop at each repetition and look at the blooming alpine meadows, mountains and snow-capped peaks. Wild animals are found here, especially many marmots.

In addition, the climb to Austria’s largest glacier, Pasterze, begins here. And for beginners, there are easy hikes through the Hohe Tauern National Park. Along the way, you can taste local farm delicacies: Heiltal bacon, meadow cheese, meat fondue.

And, of course, here you can relax from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, enjoying delicious food, nature, peace and measured life. Kein Stress is the main thing you need to learn while staying with the Austrians. In translation, this means “don’t stress”.

But it is unwise to limit water activities in Carinthia to fishing. The local lakes (there are 1,270 of them in total, of which 200 are large) are an absolute Carinthian attraction. In addition to the lakes, there are stalactite caves open to the public in Mount Obir, near Eisenkappel, Roman excavations on Mount St. Magdalena, “Minimundus” on Lake Wörther See (a town made up of models of famous buildings in different countries, reduced by 25 times) and the terrible Ragga Gorge, over which suspension bridges are inexplicably fortified – for tourists and passers-by.

Lakes

But the main advantage of Carinthia is still the lakes: Millstetter, Wörther, Weiss, Klopeiner, in which people swim all summer long (the water temperature in them reaches 26-28 degrees). This water is so clean that it was awarded the European Tourism for Tomorrow Award. The water is warmer than in the lakes only in the mineral springs, on the basis of which clinics that enjoy world fame have been opened in Carinthia.

Klippitztorl

Ski school – little boy skiing with instructor

The small, quiet and cozy resort of Klippitztorl is ideal for a family vacation. The town has many schools where kids can be taught to ski, as well as children’s amusement parks. The slopes here have a small height difference – from 1460 to 1820 m, so most of the local slopes are assigned the “blue” difficulty category.

Fortresses

Ancient fortresses have been preserved in Carinthia (Portia on the Drau River, Landkron Fortress above Ossiacher See and the main Carinthian fortress – Hochosterwitz Castle). Visitors are taken on each of them, and performances are held in the port courtyard on weekends.

By boat

A boat runs from the Carinthian capital – Klagenfurt – towards Velden along Wörther See. It would seem like an ordinary thing to do – take a boat ride on a calm lake, admire the villas on the shores … If it weren’t for the cuisine: after all, we are in Austria! On board the ship there is a restaurant, with a familiar cuisine, with excellent chefs, which turns an ordinary walk on the lake, albeit a very beautiful one, into a gourmet dinner.

In May, a new hotel is opening in the Carinthian town of Sant’Vite. It would seem to be an ordinary event – thank God, there are a lot of hotels in Austria, all kinds, old luxurious ones, and modest, family-run hotels, and cheap guesthouses, but always decent, cozy and hospitable. But this hotel will still be special. It was built by the same Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the author of the Vienna Kunsthaus, one of the truly outstanding modern architects who does not allow us to forget that construction is art.

Hundertwasser has already built one hotel – “Bad Blumau” in Styria. The master’s hand is recognizable: there are the same funny turrets and bending domes, floors and cells lined with ceramic tiles as in his Viennese works. To see Hundertwasser’s new creation, you will have to go to Carinthia.

Magical Carinthia

In the sunny south of Austria, in its southernmost federal state, Carinthia, there is a rare winter paradise with beautifully groomed ski slopes, excellent snow and a wonderful atmosphere that can capture the hearts of all lovers of skiing and untouched nature.

This sun-drenched federal state has a total of 31 ski resorts, where fans of winter active recreation will have a lot of fun. Since more than 1,000 kilometers of ski slopes await them here. It is also good that you only need one ski pass to ski, which, in addition to the favorable prices, also includes interesting services. Right on the piste, in addition to breathtaking views, you will also find rest pavilions, buffets, as well as information and security services. Here you can enjoy skiing not only on fresh fluffy snow, but also a pleasant pastime in mountain huts or on sun terraces. All this will definitely be worth it! You and your family will appreciate it.

Unforgettable experiences…

In addition, be sure to try the Carinthian cuisine, which combines traditional Alpine elements with unconventional Adriatic elements. Naturally, one cannot fail to mention the emerald-green waters of the thermal resort in Bad Kleinkirchheim or the recently renovated resort in the Warmbad Villach region, or the recently opened first Carinthian spa house by the Millstattssee lake, where your body and soul will rest. Nassfeld – the most snow in Austria

Of the many ski resorts located in Carinthia, we want to bring you at least one. This is the Alpine Center Nassfeld, which guarantees snow. In all of Austria, there is no such certainty that there will be snow as in the already mentioned Nassfeld. This is due to its geographical location. Due to low pressure areas, accompanied by a lot of precipitation from the Adriatic, this particular ski resort falls into the so-called snow trap. As a result, 180 cm of snow regularly falls. Зовсім випадково ми при перегляді безлічі австрійських гірськолижних курортів забрели на крайній південь сусідньої землі – до Каринтії. Нас зацікавився курорт середньої величини Петцен, розташований лише в кількох кілометрах від кордону зі Словенією. Він пропонує 26 кілометрів гірськолижних трас різного ступеня складності (12 км легких, 11 км середніх труднощів і 3 км важких), а також можливість бігу на лижах по 10-кілометровій трасі. Ми хотіли купити квиток на 3 години, але касир сказала нам, що через обмежену кількість снігу вони пропонують зі знижкою квиток на весь день, який більш вигідний. Після короткої їзди на канатній дорозі ми опинилися в іншому світі. Нас вітали білі пагорби, освітлені сонцем, широкі гірськолижні траси, підготовлені ратраком, і два досить довгих якірних підйомника, на які нам не потрібно було стояти в черзі. Після підйому на найвищу точку гори нам відкрився прекрасний вид на околиці засніжених вершин Альп, а також на зелені долини і близькі озера.

Частування на пагорбі

Завдяки гарній погоді і вільним гірськолижним трасам, ми не могли вдосталь насолодитися катанням на лижах. На обід нас все-таки перемогли голод і спрага, так що ми скористалися можливістю перекусити прямо на схилі. Дві турбази, що стоять близько одна до одної, пропонували австрійську класику – хороші супи, галушки з сиром, а також віденський «шніцель», або пироги на пару з кремом. Незважаючи на те, що ми напевно не були єдиними, хто тут хотів проводити старий рік і зустріти новий, в селі ми не зустрічали ні натовпи відвідувачів, ні навіть ніякі гучні компанії молоді, навіть перед барами і ресторанчиками ми не бачили ніяких груп. Потрібно зізнатися, що саме це нас приємно здивувало, тому що в нашій групі були також маленькі діти. І навіть з приблизно шестигодинною подорожжю автомобілем на місце перебування, яке ми вже заздалегідь забронювали по інтернету, ми впоралися без будь-яких проблем, адже більше половини траси проходить по якісним автомагістралям.

Катання на лижах для всіх

Хоча нашою головною метою цієї короткої відпустки було, перш за все, відпочивати і проводити час з друзями, на яких, на жаль, протягом року немає стільки часу, скільки б нам хотілося, просто не можна було з собою не взяти сноуборди і лижі. Так як прямо в селі знаходиться невеликий, але дуже приємний гірськолижний центр, відомий, як Форегг / Кечах – Маутен.

Так як ми жили від нього всього лише в двох кроках, не потрібно було приїжджати на схил на автомобілях, що оцінили особливо «наші водії». Для дітей було теж вигідно, що ми проживаємо прямо в селі, і коли їм було холодно або вони хотіли гаряче какао або чай, можна було збігати в апартамент і потім повернутися на лижі.

На перший погляд могло здатися, що одна канатна дорога з сидіннями і три підйомники, які разом обслуговують 6 кілометрів гірськолижних трас, що, з огляду на австрійські гірськолижні центри, насправді не так багато, не можуть задовольнити вимогливих лижників, це не так. І в нашій компанії були відмінні лижники, які на цьому «сільському пагорбі» отримали задоволення. І незважаючи на те, що тут знаходяться лише легкі і середньої складності гірськолижні траси. Тому що хотіли покататися на лижах в першокласному австрійському гірськолижному комплексі Насфельд, який сам по собі не відноситься до найдешевших, і до того ж під час топ-сезону в період шкільних канікул. Тому кілька місяців тому ми на інтернеті заздалегідь знайшли проживання в приватному секторі, звідки до центру нам хоча і було потрібно їхати на автомобілі кілька хвилин, але, тим не менше, співвідношення ціни, якості та пропонованих послуг здалося сприятливим.

Насфельд – катання на лижах з красивими видами

Тоді ми вирішили, що у нас тільки одні нерви, і купили відразу квитки на кілька днів, хоча знали, що сьогодні на канатну дорогу раніше одинадцяти потрапимо.

Після не надто приємного початку, який трохи зменшив наш ентузіазм, нас до кінця відпустки чекали лише одні позитиви. Прекрасно доглянуті гірськолижні спуски, які складають в цілому 110 кілометрів, задовольнять дійсно всіх любителів катання на лижах і сноубордах. На схилах працює 30 безпечних і сучасних канатних доріг і підйомників, так що, крім початкового очікування в долинній станції канатної дороги нам, всупереч топ-сезону, ніде не довелося стояти в черзі більше пари хвилин. Для дітей і початківців тут є кілька тренувальних площ, де можна скористатися також послугами досвідчених лижних інструкторів. Тут також сподобається молодіжним компаніям, яких сюди, крім хороших умов, притягають, перш за все, гірські бари, в яких грає гучна музика, і де розвагами займається часто досвідчений DJ або інші відмінні шоумени.
