Sinaia Resort History and Present

In the 19th century, this place so impressed the first king of Romania, Charles I, that he decided to build his residence here. So, on the territory of the modern resort, a summer royal residence appeared, which was called “Peleș Palace”.

In the past, Prince Michael Cantacuzino noticed a beautiful valley on the territory of the state. It was here that he built a monastery and gave the name of the area – Sinaia. The name is taken from the biblical legendary Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Tablets of the Covenant.

Soon Sinaia became a recreation center not only for the nobility, but also for ordinary workers. Tired of the noise of cities, dust and work, vacationers have the opportunity to enjoy clean air saturated with ozone, as well as phytoncides and essential oils of coniferous trees that cover the mountain slopes.

The highest point of the resort is 2000 m above sea level. The resort has ski, sled and bobsleigh tracks.

In addition, in the central town, vacationers can enjoy bars and discos, bowling and billiard clubs, cafes, restaurants, shops and casinos.

To ensure the possibility of active recreation, there is a sports center, an ice rink, as well as ski service centers, where both children and adults can learn the basics of skiing.

The Sinaia resort is accessible and beautiful. Having visited there, you will definitely spend your money and time with benefit.

Tracks and lifts

Sinaia is a Romanian ski resort and the main location of the city. Its slopes are suitable not only for experienced skiers and snowboarders who have skied dozens or even hundreds of kilometers, but also for beginners who are hesitant to step onto a high-speed snow track.

Thanks to the peculiarities of the local mountain terrain, it was possible to create tracks of 3 levels of difficulty. They differ in colors: blue, red and black. There is even a special section intended for bobsleigh (by the way, not every popular mountain resort can boast of such). Sinaia has 16 tracks of different lengths. The shortest is 150 meters long, and the longest reaches 1900 meters. From December to April, the winter sports season is open in Romania. Several types of lifts deliver tourists to the mountain peaks (bases of the slopes): cabin (the most popular), tow and chairlift.

Gondola Sinaia ski resort

The ski area is conventionally divided into 2 parts: simple (called “Sinaia”) and complex (called “Sagro”). The first is located at an altitude of 1 to 1.4 kilometers, the length of its route is 1.3 kilometers. The second follows immediately after the first, at an altitude of 1.4-2 kilometers. By the way, here is the highest Romanian mountain peak, reaching a height of 2050 meters. The lift that takes tourists to it is one of the most powerful, highly technical and safe in Europe. It is noteworthy that in the area called Vali do Brasi its height above the slope reaches no more than 120 meters. The three upper supports of the lifting mechanism are located at an angle of 45 degrees to the mountain, while this “miracle of technology” was built in just 7 months, but it works perfectly to this day.

In the Sinaia area, the lifts operate from 8:00 to 17:00, and in the “Carp” area from 8:20 to 16:30. A one-day ski pass has a quite acceptable cost (compared to the prices of many ski resorts in Europe), the price for an adult is 145 lei, and for a child – only 20 lei. The “Maximum” ski pass is valid for 3 days, it costs 370 lei for adults and 260 lei for little fidgets (aged 5-12). For those who are not confident in their abilities, or do not want to spend all their time on mountain rides, there are specially designed hourly passes with cards for single climbs.

Sinaia offers 10 ski runs of different levels, the total length of which is 40 kilometers. In addition, there is a cross-country ski run, the length of which is 20 kilometers. You can go sledding or bobsleigh on a separate track specialized for these sports. Chairlifts, cabin and tow lifts, the total number of which is 10, will help you climb the slopes. There are separate tow lifts for children. All the tracks are very well-groomed, skiing on them is a pleasure. This is emphasized by the possibility of holding various ski competitions here. At the rental points you can take all the necessary equipment and ski equipment, the rental cost is low. There is a ski school on the territory of the resort, which is famous for its professional instructors. It is possible to work on an individual program to achieve high results.

Colorful Romania: What to See in Sinaia

Sinai (as in other cities) has many cafes and bars. If you don’t try local wines, don’t pour a stack of apricot and cherry tincture, consider your vacation incomplete. Those who are interested in history and architecture really need to see Peles Castle. It looks as if it was carved from a huge stone monolith. The building was built by order of Carol I and is considered one of the most beautiful not only in Romania, but also in Europe.

Nearby there is another interesting place – “Little Peles” or Pelișor. This castle was built in 1903 in the Art Nouveau style. It is interesting because it allows you to “travel the world.” Each of its rooms is decorated in the spirit of a certain nation. But the most impressive is considered to be the “Golden Room”, it belonged to Queen Mary, who served as a sister of mercy in the First World War. This room keeps her embalmed heart, which lies in an exquisite, intricately inlaid casket.

Sinaia hotels, accommodation in Sinaia

Sinaia is a Romanian landmark, because there is much here that causes surprise with notes of admiration. If you decide to visit this corner of the country, get ready to be surprised even at the stage of settling in the hotel, because almost all local hotels are stylized in the spirit of ancient castles and fairy-tale buildings.

There are many options for accommodation. You can choose multi-star establishments, or rent (privately) luxurious villas, as well as stay in relatively inexpensive rental apartments.

Romanian hotels located directly near the resort have several interesting features. For example, the bathtubs in their rooms are equipped with a “jacuzzi” function, and in addition to the traditional curtain, they can be curtained with a flap made of dense, heavy fabric. This creates an atmosphere like in a steam room and helps tired skiers recover faster and more effectively.

An ancient city like Sinaia simply cannot fail to have legendary places. One of these is the hotel “The Royal Hotel”, which is the most popular among tourists from all over Europe (and the most expensive in Romania). It was built in 1880, since then the building has been a hospital, a SPA center and even a shelter for refugees during two wars.

Those who want to settle closer to the sights should choose a hotel called “Rina Sinaia”. Key tourist locations are located near it. These include the Sinaia Monastery, the city’s local history museum and the casino. Guests are fed according to the “Buffet” system, and among the dishes there are many national ones, which are distinguished by their special flavor and allow you to get to know Romania better.

MonaSinaia

The Villa Camelia Hotel is very similar to an ancient castle. Its rooms are furnished with elegant, carved furniture, and the bright stained glass windows, as in ancient times, allow you to feel like an aristocrat and strangely transport you to the 19th century. It seems that a ghost is about to sweep through the hotel corridors, making long, moaning sounds.

Villa Camelia was designed by one of the architects who participated in the construction of Peles Castle, built in 1884. Its style is Bavarian influenced, and the design uses ornamentation and characteristic wooden elements.

This classic villa offers quiet accommodation in a secluded location, a short walk from the centre of Sinaia.

The surrounding area is ideal for hiking, and in the city you can take a romantic walk through the picturesque Gika Park. Sinaia Train Station is a 15-minute walk away.
